WOKE Odyssey : Reimagining Odysseus for the Modern Sensitive Audience
👉 Emily Wilson's recent translation of the #Odyssey 🏺 has quickly replaced earlier ones by Lattimore, Fagles, and others in many curricula at the high school and college levels. Yet there seems to be an agenda behind it, portraying the violent and wily #Odysseus as 'problematic.' In light of this, how might Homer's story be told today so as to make its hero more acceptable to a delicate, easily offended audience? 🤷‍♂️

The Odyssey and George Orwell are probably the two weirdest constant targets for cancel culture. It probably comes out of just how compelling both are.

Orwell, like Odysseus, was a multifaceted person. Cancel culture cannot tolerate any kind of nuance. Everything must be simplified into black-and-white categories.

Orwell makes sense they want to cancel. Since they took a lot of their cancel techniques right out of the pages

A work of ironic genius that now needs to be become your next mock-epic once Legends of Liberty is completed. Thoroughly enjoyable romp - oh dear, should I use that word, 'romp'?

Romp sounds a bit too much like ‘rump’ for our tastes. But they do make good near rhymes.

Love your use of sly, comic wit. I am also a poet, new to BookTube, with considerable interest in the Classical World. I also love 'traditional', slow page poetry. We have many shared interests. Maybe we should follow one another. I look forward to following your adventures with books.

Brilliant and hilarious video. I would have had Penelope end her own life through MAID, though. I will also note that “problematic”has become an ideological shibboleth.

“Problematic” is much like “empowerment” or (my personal favorite) “Let’s have a meaningful conversation about justice.” These buzz words and phrases have become so ubiquitous, the sheep just mindlessly repeat them and apply them to everything. Funny about MAID. There were a few other things I neglected to throw in. Should've mentioned something too about the Cyclops and how Woke Odysseus would refuse to steal his food. And certainly he wouldn't blind poor Polyphemus just for eating his men!

what do you think of Fitzgerald's translation?
@classicalpoetslive
@classicalpoetslive 3 ай бұрын
Fitzgerald is lyrical and vivid. He’s also praised for being faithful to the original (which you may already know). His choices in diction, like translating Hades as ‘under gloom’ in the opening of the Iliad, are very poetic. Of all the 20c translators I like him best.

Do you refer to me or to the translation? (Both charges are, in any case, true).

Sigh. Of course. As if I couldn't figure out when I was a kid that Odysseus had some flaws, now the woke culture has to "fix" it.

Yes--there is apparently nothing, from their perspective, that is not fixable.

Richmond Lattimore’s translation most preserves the literal meaning and structure of the original Greek. Robert Fagles’ translation is less strictly accurate but more poetic and lyrical.
