For me during my lifetime it's been something along these lines with just about every awards show ever. I usually don't know about it until some time after the event has passed (and I don't really care anyway). And when I do hear about it, it seems like most of the time it only comes up if there was some sort of "scandal" (performance?) that's making headlines. Pretty much the same goes for the sportsballs as well. I don't care and tend not to know when something is going on there. Like I might only know that a super bowl has happened however many days or weeks later if there's a video about "reacting to the cringiest super bowl ads this year" or a headline about whatever singer in the half time show getting a boob exposed "accidentally" on stage.

I am 89 yo, and have witnessed the corrosion you cite... Now, virtually all movies have to have a " tiresome" scene of explicit ( porno) sex...even if it has little to nothing to do with the story. Sometimes these scenes are like hoe-humm...lizard-like....just coupling... Sheesh!

I'm a retired US citizen who hasn't watched the Academy Awards for at least 30 years. For anyone to think that these self-serving idiots in the movie industry are examples of the average American is so wrong! Yes, this country is on the wrong track, but when I discuss today's problems with other people, garbage doesn't come out of their mouths. I'm glad my parents aren't alive today to see what has happened to their beloved country.. My father fought in the Pacific during WWII and my mother and father raised nine good law-abiding children. How far we have fallen! Having that demented old fool currently napping in the White House doesn't help.

As a kid in the 70's, watching the Academy Awards used to be a family affair. There were only two or 3 terrestrial broadcast channels during those days in Malaysia, and the entertainment mostly came from Hollywood. The Annual Academy Awards (I think it was called that, then) was a genuinely entertaining show with comic relief, dancing, singing and perhaps a stunt or two. We wanted to be entertained and we were. The people behind the screen knew they were entertainers and they did their jobs well. Hollywood gave a glimpse of the seemingly endless possibilities in the land of the free and home of the brave to the rest of the world. Fast forward 50 years, and I am afraid the pictures, moving or otherwise, tell a completely different story. A story not even the most creative filmmakers in those days could have conceived. Yet, perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps "Escape from New York" did foretell the future.
