We were liberals who did not like Donald Trump, but after 2016 the all out war against Trump from the Post shocked us. We had read this newspaper from the Reagan years to Trump's election and they NEVER had a slogan, not even after 9-11. Then nearly the day after Trump's election they began posting the new slogan in a bold black bar: "Democracy Dies in Darkness". First of all, I hated this slogan, America is not now, nor has it ever been a Democracy, we are a REPUBLIC. The slogan was dumb, but the fact that it was an obvious attack on Trump annoyed us as well. Prior to the election and following, the newspaper had a CLEAR anti-Trump bias and had declared war on the GOP. Daily articles and opinion pieces had become extreme left. Articles made no pretense at fairness or interviewing people of opposing views in their reports. My father and I were centrist liberals, not far left. We didn't like Trump, but we were educated people who knew the history of presidents very well, he was just going to be a president we didn't like or agree with like W. Bush or Reagan. But the newspaper was acting like his election was some kind of death knell of the Republic. We did not like extremists of any type, but the fact that this kind of behavior was in the Washington Post was especially bad. Every article written was an analysis of why Trump was wrong, rather than an attempt to understand or explain what his goals were. They never treated W. Bush that way, and in all honesty, I always thought Bush was a far worse president. Anyway, we cancelled the subscription and never went back...Journalism is dead at WaPo.

Common sense is not very common anymore. Pie in the sky is much more important than having your feet firmly planted on the ground for the diversity crowd. This reminds me of an experience I had in the 1990s. I was an American journalist on an exchange program to the Berliner Zeitung, a newspaper in Berlin. It had been the top paper of East Berlin, but was hemmoraging market share to the West Berlin papers after the fall of the wall. I was there when they finally brought in a Western editor, and he had a staff meeting and starts talking about the changes, how reporters were supposed to get out there and look for stories. The old East German reporters were confused, because they still expected the government to feed them stories. They were like helpless babies afraid to actually get dirt on their shoes by stepping outside the office.

I would literally make it a fireable offense to editorialize any new story and I would make it mandatory that we do not use anonymous sources and that we only tell you what happened where it happened how it happened and we do not inject any politics at all into the news. That's how it used to be. Of course decades ago when there were many, MANY metropolitan newspapers it was common knowledge there were Democratic newspapers, Republican newspapers, and what-have-you newspapers but the editorializing was ALWAYS kept on the editorial pages.
