Education is the only way we can prevent making the same mistakes of the past. I am so over this woke brigade and their narrative. Slavery has always existed throughout man kinds history. People say it was the Portuguese that started the transatlantic slavery trade but they are wrong...very wrong. Has anyone ever heard about the 'Barbary slave trade'? These were North African pirates that would take White European as slaves ( Ireland, South Britain, Netherlands and Iceland, Italy, Spain, and Portugal) and take them back to North Africa.

@@njt88Not correct. Every empire has had slavery, but we were the only ones to learn it was wrong and use our power to put a stop to it. Every slave out of West Africa was ALREADY a slave of another African. It had been going on for nearly a 1000 years before Europe took any slaves from there, and Portugal were the first Europeans to buy them off the Africans. Before that the slaves would go the the Arab empire and be castrated. @michelleqs78 is correct about the 'Barbary slave trade" that would deal with European white slaves as well as Africans.

@@njt88 - The Portuguese were exporting slaves to Brazil a century before the North American slave trade; the North African Barbary states were exporting to the Ottomans a century before that (indeed were taking white slaves from as far north as Iceland); the Arabs were taking slaves several centuries before that. And two or three MILLENNIA before that the Egyptians were taking slaves. Slavery was a universal human condition, and the only state that ever put a complete full stop to it was Great Britain.

I've seen people saying black people in ANY advert is now "woke", like literally being black is a political choice to people in the UK because people have opinions on how race has affected their lives! Noone objects to a full historical account of slavery for example but it's when that is not balanced with history before and since but instead gives a clearly highly political slant that people find tedious. Its also extremely simplistic and treats citizens like we are incapable of critical thought. We are now being preached at from every angle with the same agenda without an opportunity for people with other opinions to have our voices heard. For example, as a woman I object to Trans women Are Women being pushed as a truth we must all embrace. TWAW is a good example of a mantra with no analysis and no alternative views allowed. National trust have decided to jump on the rip off band wagon since holidaying here in the uk will be high.. they have decided to charge parking £2 FOR 1 hour, £4 for 4 and £8 all day at little off the trek carparks here in cornwall..... places where there is nothing but somewhere to just walk.... these carparks until recently have been free... and rightly so, they are unmade and somewhere to enjoy for free away from the pay for everything cities and local towns in Cornwall.... as a local I am disgusted.... nominal or token prices I could live with but I think they are extortionate... shame on the national trust.....

My husband and I were National Trust members, we have cancelled over their stupid 'wokery and for over zealous moves with this virus, locking car parks during house arrest so even people living nearby couldn't use them and go for a walk. We would renew again if the Trust reverts to doing what they are supposed to do, look after the homes, gardens and coast land they were entrusted to preserve.

I used to work for the National trust. They are awful people who are more interested in buying houses to turn into holiday cottages than preserving the houses they are supposed to. They are ruining items by shoving them in barns that should be sold so they can have a chance at being preserved. They pay the people who do all the work a pittance and the top people get paid a fortune but do nothing. I resigned because they would not do anything about the theft going on, they wouldn't even call the police because I believed it was being stolen by the people in charge. I would never bother having a membership to feed these people.

Identity politics, the woke agenda and the fervor with which the left now commonly upholds the prescribed socio-political moral viewpoint of the day is, to my mind, a direct replacement of religion for those unwilling to exert personal authority in defining their own beliefs and role in society. If graphs could be drawn showing the decline in those identifying themselves in terms of their religion over the past few decades against the increasing prevalence of these rising dogmatic ideologies... I would suspect the total proportion of the effected population has remained relatively static, over the past century. I am a National Trust member.I joined twelve years ago.Have not made much use of my membership but not bothered as my intention was to help to preserve my countrys heritage. New historical perspectives are always welcome, from the National Trust or anybody else. For example, whenever I visited a National Trust property in my youth I had to constantly remind myself that but 2% of the population, or thereabouts, lived in conditions of such grandeur as this. That my ancestors were busy digging up the coal like moles beneath the ground or in service to pay for it. Incidentally, my own grandmother was in service. Every year I ask my university students what "in service" means and in twenty years - despite the popularity of Downton Abbey - not one of them has a clue. Most of them think that it means being in the army. So my point is that the National Trust can and should perform a role in changing perspectives. To see how they have done this very well, visit Erddig in Wrexham. Here the lives of the domestic servants have been very well documented and portrayed. Let us not forget that the servants played a very large role in the running of the house. So yes, you do need different perspectives. What you do not need is both hysteria and a desperate and disproportionate attempt to jump on the 'band waggon.' By all means make mention of how the money was earned to pay for the estate. If that was, in part, from slavery, then by all means say so. However, do also mention the 'wage slaves' in the British Isles who also paid for it with their repressed and short lives. The point is that one should get things in historical - and not hysterical - proportion. Also, if something portrays a slave, show it for what it is and what it represented in its time period. By obliterating it, you disguise history rather than uncover it. For an example of hysteria, band waggon jumping and a desperate urge not to offend at the price of history, see what the National Trust did with regard to the slave statue at Dunham Massey.

Don't be cowards. That was in no way a good enough argument because you didn't say what you wanted. The thought of two men having sex turns my stomach but I stuck needles in my arms for 20 years and that probably turns plenty of people's stomachs.
