I think a perfect way to illustrate this is to look at another series that does this better. I almost feel bad even mentioning him here because he is so much better than this, but let's think about Kyo from Fruits Basket for a moment. at first blush, Kyo is the prototypical male tsundere. he acts brash and stand offish, and as you learn more about him, you start to really care about him and understand why he acts that way. but Kyo's backstory actually goes a long way toward explaining how he became a broken person with a flawed outlook on people and relationships. when Kyo was really young, he was very severely rejected by people who were supposed to love and care for him, for reasons that he had absolutely no control over, or ability to fix through effort. naturally, this destroyed his entire sense of security, and led to deeply ingrained trust issues and self loathing. Kyo acts rough and stand offish because it allows him to control how he is perceived by others. he doesn't trust other people's positive emotions... he doesn't know how he lost the love of his family, or what he could've done to prevent that. none of it makes any sense to him, so he sees other people as a total mystery, and getting invested in them feels like a gamble that could get him really hurt all over again. if they hate him because he makes himself a nuisance on purpose... that's predictable, and makes sense, and he feels in control. and he's spent so long like this, that it is honestly painful for him to start trusting someone again, even if it's happening because someone is proving themselves to be trustworthy. the more he loves someone, the more it could potentially hurt to feel rejected by them. he anticipates that immediately, and everything he does is an attempt to defend himself. Kyo is a good example of how you write a character with a bad attitude and a sad backstory, in a way that makes sense and is used effectively within the narrative. Kyo starts out as this prickly, hurt, awkward kid, and he _needs to change._ not just for the sake of those around him, but for the sake of himself. his life will get better if he heals. the story is about repairing the damage that the characters have experienced, and you see Kyo try really hard toward that end. because eventually he realizes that if he isn't careful, he could come off as the one who is rejecting people and hurting them. he knows how that feels. he doesn't want to cause that. so he makes conscious efforts not to act badly toward people who don't deserve it... eventually, he will learn for the sake of others, and it is _not_ smooth watching him try to do this. he's obviously embarrassing himself pretty badly in a lot of cases, which is a high stakes game for someone who fears rejection and reacts really badly to shame. but at the end of the day, Kyo is only hurt so badly by rejection because of how equally badly he wants love and acceptance. this is the core cathartic appeal of characters that have to gain redemption. you cannot just write some blasé, disaffected asshole with a sob story in their past, and handwave abusive behavior because of it. not when there are so many more characters who you can see trying desperately to be good, even if they aren't already good at doing so. when done properly, characters like these are there for people who haven't lived perfect lives, and don't know if they deserve to feel love, or what the road to being loved might look like for them. when a writer tries to use these archetypes without actually putting in the work, it's basically just insulting.

I love how the explanation for the plot doesn't sound all that bad. You can see the potential of this fun, back-and-forth secretive romance story where she discovers that social popularity and acceptance isn't what it's cracked up to be. He'd probably show his good sides by trying to help her out and even give advice but she's too wrapped up in trying to impress the unimpressionable. Then the 2:00 mark of the twenty minute video hits.
@MessiahBoi5 жыл бұрын
bryal but why do all shows have to be that way? Why does every show have to be uplifting? The same goal of showing her it’s not worth it can be achieved in the way the show goes about it. It’s not like he even wanted to be in a relationship with her to begin with, so why would he be nice and help her as the most popular dude in school?
@bryal78115 жыл бұрын
@@MessiahBoi I don't think I said it had to be, just that the typical rom/com would go in that direction. The problem with the anime/manga is that it doesn't explore both sides of the coin and shows little to no faults of the male lead. The author does not challenge the idea of his decisions being wrong or incorrect in anyway. If it were to be of a darker tone but still well written, she'd do a 180 and bring it back to him. Even worse, she could devolve into how her "friends" act. I could see a hypothetical plot-arc about a newer student being exploited by Erika. Whether the story takes a positive or negative turn doesn't matter. Wolf Girl and Black Prince is still surface level and poorly written because it doesn't dive into anything about it's theme and doesn't bother trying to challenge ideas on abusive relationships, social popularity, social isolation or the importance of following/not following it.

She gets demeaned and abused by her so called "love interest" daily, though manages to meet a guy she can get along with, treats her with respect, and has romantic interest in her; but no, she ends up with the bad boy cause he was either first guy or there's just something about him that makes him more exotic. marcelkat The two manga I can think of that were semi-popular with horrible male leads were ‘Kyō, Koi o Hajimemasu’ and ‘Hot Gimmick’. The guy in Koi Hajime at least sort of changes, but gave the female lead so much crap before getting to that point (he was only getting good towards the end). The male lead in Hot Gimmick never changes, with it ending on a downer of the female lead “believing” she can change his attitude with marriage. The only manga that I can think of that did the bad boy trope well was ‘Hana Yori Dango/Boys Over Flowers’. The females lead took crap from the male lead’s antics, but she gave him crap back. She didn’t fall in love with him instantly, forcing him to jump through hoops and change his attitude just to win her over; and he became a better man in the end, deserving her more than the second male love interest (who was the wishy-washy type).

I heard a friend, in an abusive relationship, saying to me "But he's making efforts for me, and I'm the only one who realises it". I heard another one saying that she likes "Boys that she can fix". In real life, it's not how it works. It's not up to a partner to "fix" them, and movies, series, manga and all other thing that gives ideas like that are awfully dangerous for victoms of toxic relationship. To sum both comments up “I wanna fix you.” is kinda rude and not the dynamic. Also the whole fix the guy or fix you is kinda degrading. Like the whole “I don’t really love you but I see the potential if you change.” Is a bit odd. It implies your partner is broken, your in a bad relationship or you don’t love them but you’ll shape them to be lovable. God, I watched a few episodes a while back. Reasons I tried it out was because: 1. I share names with the heroine even though it's a different spelling. 2. I like the bad boy type more often than not. 3. And straight to the point, I'm a romance anime junkie. I thought this was going to be one of my favorites but holy shit was I wrong. There is only one thing I remember from this show and it's the reason I dropped it. It's the scene where Kyoya (not sure how to spell it if that's even his name) starts being nice to Erika for some reason (can't remember) and then when they are in some restaurant, he drops the act and starts saying the meanest shit to her. I just remember being so fucking pissed and just losing any hope I had for the guy. I was so happy when Erika threw the water in his face and walked out, thinking maybe she'll leave him for good and try to turn her life around to send a positive message to the viewers. But nope, they somehow (can't remember) "make-up" and I lose all patience I had for the show. Dropped it soon after with a sour taste in my mouth.

Like the brave strong girl we know could do nothing but being a damsel in distress at that moment, I love Mizuki, just the way author treat her was kind of unfair for her character imo, like, as far as I remember Usui did not change that much in not respecting her boundaries. a worse shoujo anime that is also under reverse harem genre (& is a popular one sadly) is diabolik lovers. Just the WORST EVER. To be honest many of the relationships in shoujo anime/manga are bad ones for many reasons that needs a lengthy essay to list all. One time I pretty much went through a quest to find a shoujo anime/manga that represents a healthy relationship so I looked through many source materials & the first time I found one, I felt like I wanted to give some kind of prize to the one who made it. So in summary it is rare to find healthy relationships in shoujo. Many times I just wished that the heroine would grow up & realize that she could be in a better relationship a healthy one, but then most of the stories ends with marriage, so I don't know I just hope that the targeted demographic reads & watches those stories just for fun...

The rest of the story is random drama the female lead must face, while the male lead pursues her (forcibly) to make the person he slept with his woman.

If it was me, I’d rewrite Wolf Girl and Black Prince like this : Our protag is caught up in the lie like before, but when she asks him to help her keep up the lie, he says no, saying that it would only put more eyes on her. She says how that’s all she wants, popularity! He shakes his head, but agrees to help her out, on one condition : he gets to treat her badly in public. They establish a safe word and phrase to tell him to stop berating her when they’re in public together, and they go through with it. This time, her popular friends are concerned for her, and are actually her friends. He treats her like garbage in front of them, and they start to think he may be a shitty guy who doesn’t deserve to be popular. He’s enjoying it, but she doesn’t understand why. She starting to really hate the attention, avoiding hanging out with her popular friends, but she doesn’t know why. She wants to be popular, yet, she has these conflicting feelings. It culminates to the protag having to use her safe word, because she starts to panic and cry. She runs away, and he runs after her, apologizing and wiping her tears. This is where he explains his motives : he hates being popular, and wants desperately to tarnish his reputation. He’s tried getting into fights, doing embarrassing things, and even went as far to stop doing the things he’s passionate about because the attention stresses him out. He grabs her hands, puts his face onto them, and says “You want my life so badly, but I know you now! You would never be happy with it!” She gently pulls his face up to hers, and says “You know what. I think you’ve taught me a lot.” and kisses him. The moment gets a comedic ending by him falling backwards comically, and the final reveal of his character is that he’s never been kissed! Her popular friends were watching from behind the bend, and they hoot and holler for their friend. Both the protag and the guy are embarrassed, yet, they get swept up in kind praise from a few close friends. And that’s all they wanted. His popularity continues to dwindle, and she enjoys the independence of not having the school’s eyes on her. She encourages him to pick up glassblowing with her, to which he shrugs, and ends up really enjoying the sketching and planning process. They go to a college together, he learns how to construct different glass statues and vases, while she learns how to create them. They open a small business together, have two kids, happily ever after.

The "abusive boyfriend with power over girl, but he has a sad past and one time he stopped a rapist and another time showed something almost but entirely unlike graduate so its okay" is basically a genre. Hello people, I'm happy to say, that this Video gave me enough to think and want to talk about, that I found the motivation to make a comment. Thank you for that, this doesn’t happen often with me. I saw "Wolf Girl and Black Prince" back when it aired which is about a long time ago and I don't really remember too much about it. The thing I recall is hoping for a specific plot point to come true, which never happened. In my mind I hoped he intentionally played to be a bad guy to push her over the edge. Maybe recognizing that having a horrible boyfriend isn't worse keeping some wrong friends. At which point she might break ties with everyone, just for the guy to become apologetic and admitting, to have done bad things to help her make a right decision. Hopefully even accepting that she should not have any romantic feelings for him but proposing that a decent friendship might be better for her. Of course, this never happened. This is a bad show I didn't even rate on MAL because I wasn't sure enough of my opinion to rate it truthfully to my taste. The only Anime I ever watched and considered worse was the Animation for the Visual Novel from Amnesia, spring 2013. I know the Visual Novel is considered to be good, but that Anime didn't translate well. It sits currently on 6.28 with nearly 96,000 users having seen it, which is probably still too high even for MAL standards. So, if you consider making this reaction "style review?" on another Anime I would be happy if this might be considered a contender. Thank you for the good Content.

ahh, okay but after rewatching the series because i remember liking it, the relationship was really not that toxic. The girl really did love him and didn’t went in with any hero complex wanting to ‘save’ him or anything. Just like how everyone seem to focus on his bad side, she was just caught up by his ‘good’ side. Like at the beginning she did pointed out a lot of time when he was being rude, but just stuck through so she could keep some friends. The guy also isn’t super malicious, at the end his family explains how he just shut off after his parents broke off. Like people just take things differently, and his way was to not trust/love people ig. Not everyone can go through life all happy go lucky, and show their love so carefree like Erika. I thought the anime just showed how there’s 'hope' in life, and you shouldn’t always stay shut off from the world just because you got disappointed by a few things. Like his sister, he was just tired of people being surface level and didn’t really trust Erika at first. Honestly love sometimes just takes effort, just because someone is quiet/cold (or make you act like a dog eh) doesn’t mean they’re truly mean/undeserving of attention. Also, my only explanation for the dog thing is prob his attachment issues and he loves dogs (hopefully meaning he kinda loves Erika too), he was just bored and didn't have any obligation to Erika to act like a sweet love at first sight bf.
@starshine67674 жыл бұрын
In the end, (TLDR) he was kind sometimes. Even if compared to society’s standard it's decent, people are diff and show affections in different ways. Or maybe I just don’t like it when people are so against something when it wasn’t actually horrible. It was kinda just like a slice of life too where not every guy is a perfect Prince Charming that is kind to everyone they meet. I get that it shouldn't show young girls to put in too much effort in an unloving person, but if people aren't willing to put in work in any relationship, the only ones that'll excel are those who will blindly believe everyone has good intentions. As long as the people in the relationship are truly happy and isn't just forcing attraction with people who should be 'good enough'. Also (wow this is v long) that arc w the guy that was pushing him to be w more girls was pretty sweet. *Spoiler?* But he just stood his ground, and basically said you’ll find someone that’s enough (or smt), oh and that a lot of trash is still trash. Um yea sry for the rant but labeling people who have a hard time expressing their feelings (as Erika say, kinda hypocritically tho, he just has a hard time telling the truth) as toxic. Tbh idk what should be considered toxic, but as long as someone understands their own worth, and is willing to put in the effort (even if in comparison it looks weak/not enough) the relationship isn’t completely helpless. Plus he dropped the dog act in a few eps, and instead just using it as an excuse to treat her decently w/o 'hurting his pride'(eh).

As someone who read the entire manga, I think some of its appeal is that they grow up - lots of anime and manga just end at high school, with the characters not really giving much thought to how they’re going to become working adults. The part where Erika has to consider what she wants to do was probably my favourite part. I remember being recommended this show from a top ten romance anime list. Watched an episode and a half and couldn't endure it anymore. Even I with my low confidence back then could see this was toxic and nasty

I think the worst is vampire knight. Not much is worse than having child with your great great etc…grandfather in the body of your biological brother😃

“The show’s main way of trying to make him an appealing mate” Really getting into the whole “Wolf Girl” theme here, aren’t we?

I was hoping for her to leave him. She literally had another cute, not a red flag, guy interested in her

Itazura na Kiss is on par with Wolf Girl and Black Prince, the girl is desperate for the main guy and the guy treats her either like dirt or a servant. Although I will say I did at least have a few doki doki moments with Itazura na Kiss. It is an older anime though so the production quality is a little janky

Honestly, it feels like it could've been a dark take on the usual Shojo formulas. Like what if the bad boy was really just... bad? What if the ditzy girl got into a real abusive relationship? This could've been good if they just realized what they were doing.

i remember when this show was coming out and i saw a lot of posts going around condemning it for condoning abuse and unhealthy relationships, which i guess means i follow the right people! but it honestly disappoints me that content like this runs so rampant with so many people thinking it's okay or even actively enjoying it. it makes me worry about The Youth(tm). like, if you wanna fantasize about being in a relationship that might be less than healthy, okay fine, i get it, i self insert ship with dio brando. but it's super irresponsible to share content supporting that kind of dynamic in a way that makes it seem desirable and healthy. it's not. keep that shit to yourself, in your brain, where you actually know what a healthy relationship looks like and nobody can get hurt. additional note: the relationship dynamic in this show reminds me a lot of the worst manga i've ever read, which was also a shoujo romance in which the guy(s) involved exercises a lot of power over the girl in a pretty alarming way. it's called black bird, and fortunately it never got an anime adaptation! i read part of it when i was 13 and somehow had the worldly awareness to know it was a shitty relationship even back then.

As much as i dislike their abusive relationship the biggest issue for me is that none of it makes sense, his reasons for being this abusive dont make sense, and no level of stockholm syndrome or being a masochist justifies her staying with him unless shes taken a giant hit to her head that I dont know of. Not sure what the anime is trying to say, that lying is fine and that all abuse is excused if theres even a moderate amount of warmth now and then? The entire thing was just painful to watch for me and thank you for pointing it out.

I finally found someone with the same opinion about this shit. Looking at the facebok groups >literally< everyone said "read the manga, he'll be a nice guy, they both evolve", and I thought he was the only one who believed that transmits a bad idea that in an abusive relationship the guy would change and everything will be happy and colorful, but in fact, that kind of thinking only made it difficult for women to just break up. Edit: I watched one called "Itazura na Kiss" once, and I think it's even worse than wolf girl and black prince. I was traumatized.

The only romance anime that I think could be considered worse would be school days, kodomo no Jikan (made me physically ill when I read the synopsis), or Citrus (the lack of consent makes me feel so uncomfortable)
