When setting leg hold traps for wolves, trap preparation is extremely important. Take care to set aside the first layer of soil you remove. You will want to put it back last exactly like you removed it first. This gives the trap site a natural looking appearance. Imbed your drag hook and chain first in your dirt hole. Pack soil firmly around and on top of hook and chain. Set your trap on top of this. Place a piece of wax paper on top of the jaws and pan of your trap to help keep dirt out. Sift a fine layer of soil around and on top of your trap. As an option, you can place Peat Moss around and on top of your trap because it is light weight. Place the first layer of soil you removed carefully around the top of your trap and make it look undisturbed and natural. I spray skunk essence around the general trap area high up on trees so the wind can catch it. Wolves seem to be attracted to the smell and then to your trap. Works for me !

It looks like you didn't even remove the grass from your traps...? Shiny new metal. No antifreeze or wax dirt? It looked like frozen ground. Does that set up actually get the wolves in? I figured they would shy away from something attempting to control them that much.

My traps are all washed and dipped. They work for me. The key is to just stay clean. Each trapper has their own secrets. I listen to the best mentors I know. Then march to my own drummer.

@@explorer4245 I live in the CdA area and new to trapping, I would enjoy tagging along to get some insight to start trapping in my area, if you are still actively trapping.

Looks good! I'm a Trapper from Saskatchewan, Canada and catch a few wolves every year. Usually on scent posts but I trail snare them as well. New subscriber here.

Thank you for subscribing. I use scent posts as well. I prefer snares over leg hold traps only because of the constant snow fall and ice where I trap.

Thank you for watching. I use more snares actually than leg hold traps just because of having to reset the leg hold traps after a new snowfall. I too use both scent posts and trail snares.

Hello, I've been subscribed to your channel for quite awhile now and just re-watched this video. I noticed this time, you have the trigger dogs modified. How does that work, and what did you do to them?

Actually the traps are MB750's straight from the supplier. I have not modified them. They are adjustable however and work great.

Actually the trigger dogs are original. No modifications from the manufacturer.
