A convenient and quick way to operate portable or in small spaces and perhaps where a stealthy antenna is needed. But how compromised are these types of antennas? Connect with my channel by subscribing and commenting.

A compromise but compared to what it takes to get a full half wave antenna on those bands it could be the best option by far

Yes they definitely get you on the air. I experimented on 40, 60 and 80 a couple days ago with a WRC and a whip and was amazed I made contacts on every band with just 20w. Great video Tim!

I saw your video, well done. Low band contacts during the day, with qrp and dirt simple setup, not bad at all. I was happy to see you use 60 meters. We are so lucky to have a spot in the middle of 5mhz

How does a base loaded coil compare with a hamstick? There can't be much in it, but I was wondering about how easy a hamstick would be to model?

Another brilliant way of explaning the differences in antenna and losses that could be experienced. As you state, they all get you on the air. It doesn't mattter whether it's a 33 or 59+. Thankyou, Gary

Based on your recommendations I have purchased the AMPRO-40/20, Slide Winder and the Mad Dog in the last month. Only used the AMPRO and the Slide Winder so far (Mad Dog only got dispatched today from Oz) and both of them have got me on the air. As long as you are not expecting to work South America with 599 both ways then they are fantastic antennas for portable use or for people who don’t have a garden.

Thanks for this comparison. I use a Wolf River Coils Silver Bullet Mini for POTA activations, but I've never been exactly certain how it measures up. Thanks again!

I've been happy with my WRC. Base-loaded verticals are great for portable ops.

Great analysis Tim. It's a double whammy. One the higher bands the skip zone favours vertical antennas for most contacts. Unless you're working DX, many contacts on the lower bands will be approaching NVIS where a horizontal antenna will out perform a vertical.
