Wolf vs. Dog Intelligence!
When it comes to Wolf vs. Dog intelligence scientists say that dogs have the intelligence of a two year old child and the IQ of around 100. Unfortunately, I couldn't find out the average age or IQ of wolves, but scientists agree that wolves are 10 times smarter than the smartest dogs. Wolves are also smarter than lions, tigers, and other large predators. One thing they've noticed is that wolves and dogs have a different understanding of barriers and territory. I can totally relate to this. Every time I bring Honey and Bob to the dog park, Bob's a good boy and plays within the boundaries of the fence. Honey doesn't see the fence at all. It's just something fun to jump over. She has a tendency to jump the fence to greet all her friends, and when she's bored, she'll jump the fence to greet new friends in the parking lot. As you can imagine, this causes major issues. Most dog owners are not very fond of being greeted at their car by a wolf. 🐺 ❤️ 🐾

Coco the gorilla had a vocabulary of around 2000 words and had a tested IQ that averaged at 82 (75-90). Coren's studies showed dogs have a vocab of 150-250 words. I'd be pumping the brakes on claims of dogs having and IQ of 100 it is utter BS, let alone wolves being 10x smarter.

Honey has no filter as compared to dogs. It's a cute trait to watch but perhaps a bit interesting to get used to as an owner, if owner is even the right word. That said, do you get any push back at the dog park for bringing her? Most people probably don't understand how it's even possible to have a non-domesticated canine as a pet.

IQ classification tries to fit the intelligence of the human population by definition to a normal distribution of mean=100 and stddev=15. A score therefore only shows how common a person above or below that level of intelligence is, e.g. 100 is smarter than 50% of humans, 115 is 84%, 130 is 98%

When my Husky was still a puppy, he never stopped following me, and it got scary when I would go up front, where a car wouldn't be able to distinguish him from the asphalt till it was too late. So one day, I had gone to take out the trash, and when I heard him scurrying out, I hid behind the car and scared the crap out of him. He ran inside so fast, and when I went to tell my mom, the moment I got to the part where he runs, he barked at me and nipped my hand, as if he was trying to shut me up! I saw a program on PBS that addressed this very well. Researchers put a dog in a cage. Then they put a food reward outside the cage. Then they observed that the dog would try to get out, but promptly give up and instead look at the human outside the cage, and bark or beseech the human to help them out of the cage. The wolf did no such thing. It was single-minded in trying to get out, and it never gave up. The observed behavior of the dog could be considered “low IQ”, and the (forgive me) doggedness of the wolf suggests higher intellectual function. But the key thing was that the dog has developed to cooperate, whereas the wolf has developed to not rely on others very much. I would argue the cooperative approach requires a different set of skills, such as cooperation, analyzing non-verbal cues, patience, etc., which are not associated with lower intellect. That said, I’m smitten with your pets. They seem to give you joy. ❤

I believe there’s a sound scientific basis for the study, but neither the study nor I ever said wolves can’t cooperate with each other. There is, after all, you know, the pack. @@jdaxci Oh wow. I didn't expect this question. Welllll. First off, his name was Smokey. And he was BIG. Big paws, thick fur, big ears, bushy tail and very big fangs. Definitely bigger fangs than your average dog. He was majestic in his character. Very calm and very much in the present moment. I remember a few things. I was about 12 when I knew him and of course a stupid boy. When my family would visit my uncle WAY up in the mountains with nobody within miles.... I thought I could just wander into the woods like Grizzly Adams. One time, I did just that... and I probably went in too far. Sure enough, behind me comes Smokey looking at me like: "Uhhh... whattya doin' over here? If you don't mind... I'm gonna hang for a little bit." Starting to sense I shouldn't be there, he turned, looking at me, basically telling me to follow him. "This way idiot." And I did. He took us home. So he basically tracked me and brought me out. All very calmly. He also had a habit of lying in the middle of the dirt road in front of the house, a good 5 minutes before a vehicle would come by. (A very RARE event up there). In fact, that's how we knew someone was approaching. But it was funny. He wouldn't budge. It's like he was playing a regal toll-keeper. "Nah... this is my road. I'll decide when." lol. My uncle would have to come out and get him out of the way. He was just very gentle with everyone. He tolerated all kinds of stupid things myself, my brother and 2 sisters would do, like all of us sleeping with our heads on him by the fireplace. He also would accommodate us and pull our sleds down the snowy hill. Always, very matter of fact, like he knew he was entertaining us. One thing he did was smile if you scratched his big ears just right. His fangs would show and he'd let you know. The coolest thing about it, was that my uncle gave him space. Smokey would sometimes take off for up to 3 days, only to return with porcupine quills or stinking like skunk. He was so smart and in tune, you just knew he could take care of himself. You never worried. "Smokey home yet? Probably tomorrow." He also had a little companion lap dog - a Terrier. They were the oddest couple. But great friends. It's really hard to convey what a wonderful animal he was. Maybe one day, you'll find one too? 🙂

Also how biased some research supposed to be "scientific" is, by simply having the researcher be a dog lover that wants to find a way to confirm their favourite pet is so smart and so much better than others. Dogs can't even solve the simple puzzles that toddlers at 2 years old can, and can't craft simple tools, no way in hell their intelligence is anywhere near the one of a human toddler or even in the top 10 of smartest animals. Plus regarding wolves in the wild, corvids, who are actually VERY intelligent animals(can solve complex puzzles, have very good problem solving skills, very good memory and social skills and can craft complex tools), use wolves all the time to eat. They signal them where prey are, letting them take all the risks of hunting, and then getting the spoils. They are clearly outsmarting the "1000 IQ" animal, but they don't look like cute inbred dogs so that doesn't count lol

My friend had a Timberwolf when we were younger. One time my mom pulled up to my friends house to pick me up in her minivan. As I was walking towards the van, my mom automatically opened the sliding side door, and our Puggle was there in the back seat. Timber (the wolf) jumped his backyard fence, ran across the street, and hopped into the back of the van to meet Spike (The Puggle) What you said about wolves not having boundaries is 100% true. It was a very wholesome, yet nerve wracking moment.

Here's the difference between dogs and wolves. Given an impossible puzzle with a food reward inside, a wolf will do everything it can to break open the puzzle, but will always fail and eventually give up. A dog will also try, but eventually will go to a human being for help. That's domestication in a nutshell.
@BoinkrNanis
@BoinkrNanis 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, this is from the documentary. The real difference is that the wolf wont go to humans for aide, they will either do the puzzle on their own or they wont do it at all. It doesnt really show a level of intelligence but it shows domestication. Intelligence in animals is ranked differently than humans. But dogs are moe emotionally intelligent than wolves are or most animals simply because of the domestication. But I mean, dogs arnt smarter than like crows.
@nthgth
@nthgth 2 ай бұрын
Coming to a human for aid increases the chance of success. Compared to not, taking advantage of that denotes intelligence as far as I'm concerned. The dog is more likely to get the food than the wolf in this scenario so who's really smarter? (answer: the human, lol. It's not a measure of "intelligence" for the animals, just inherently different thought processes)

The average 2 year old actually has an equivalent IQ of around 10, although the IQ system is extremely unreliable even with adults, and can't be related to other species since they have different cognitive functions in their day-to-day lives, so a test of intelligence for a different species would test very different things. (I.e. the IQ system was made to test the performance of adolescent humans, so any group besides that cannot be at all accurately translated)

Jesus. That’s not how it works. It is AVERAGE FOR TWO. Look at it this way. If you looked at all intelligence and found the part where they score exactly 100? That is then set against everyone of the same age. So… the dog showed the same level as those tested and showing 100 as average which is two years old. So many people here are trying to make it work the other way. The level is entirely arbitrary until it’s contextualised by the age. So it makes no difference what the true adult score is or how a 2 year old would score on an adult test. The mean is defined as the average of all two year olds which is how the mean is found. TLDR: you’re thinking of IQ testing incorrectly. You’re not testing a load of kids against the test the test is measured against the participants. That’s how you get an average

Actually kind of irresponsible to take a wolf to a public dog park. No matter how unlikely you think it is, if someone unwittingly does the wrong thing or the wolf’s just having a bad day and attacks a stranger, you’re not getting it off. You could very easily have a negligent homicide or permanent mutilation on your hands. There’s also a reasonable expectation that dog parks will be limited to dogs. To make a claim that the average (or any) dog has an IQ of 100 is fundamentally flawed and quite frankly ridiculous from a scientific perspective. Put aside the fact that IQ is borderline pseudoscience at worst and a subjective measurement of intelligence at best. Put aside the fact that IQ is designed to measure a humans intelligence, which often includes ideas like reading comprehension and mathematic fluency, both of which are near impossible to grasp for animals in the way that we understand it. Let’s put all that aside for a moment. From a purely statistical viewpoint, IQ tests are generally designed such that the AVERAGE PERSON has an IQ of 100, with 68% of people between 85-115. So saying that the average dog has an IQ of 100 means that, in this quantifiable metric, there is no distinction in intelligence of humans and dogs. Or, you could say that since a 2 year old toddler is supposedly a valid comparison, that there’s no intellectual difference between a 2 year old and an adult. It makes no sense, and saying wolves are 10x smarter is also a completely invalid claim. Like telling somebody that this sandwich tastes 10x better than Subway, there’s no scientific merit to that, it’s likely to be used as only an anecdotal comparison and not some sort of fact.

It is important, when discussing IQ, to remember that age is a factor in IQ measurement. The message in this video is certainly not as clear as it might be - it is a short video, and the creator is presumably not a psychologist or neuroscientist. I understood it to mean that the _average_ dog has intelligence comparable with the _average_ two-year-old human, which would of course be 100 (since IQ tests are indeed designed such that the average person OF ANY AGE has an IQ of 100). It is _not_ saying that there’s no intellectual difference between a 2-year-old human and an adult human, it's saying that the intelligence of an average 2-year-old human is comparable with the intelligence of an adult _dog_ - in as much as this means anything, it would certainly hold for reading comprehension and mathematic fluency, both of which are near impossible to grasp for two-year-old humans in the way that we understand it.

@@litterpicker1431 Actually, IQ tests have shown that any child below 5 that takes one turns out to have a highly inaccurate result, and below 3, you might as well be playing a guessing game. Most IQ tests are not designed for children, especially those with reading comprehension and mathematical questions. A good age for a child to be tested for their IQ is between 5-7 years. But the best age to do it is when you're an adult. And if you plan on going to college, it's a good idea to take one (or another) after graduating.

Honestly, there is a big, big gulf between Siberian husky intelligence and ordinary dogs, as anyone who has owned both will know. I think they, well most of them, are a lot more like wolves than dogs. It's what makes looking after a husky such a challenge, at least until you get used to what they are capable of.

Growing u in Alaska watching wild wolves plus a wolf breeder close by, it is just incredible the intelligence of these amazing creatures. They size you up immediately for hostility toward them and the pack, check your size/speed/etc and then if you are a possible food source. When you see them in the wild they do not just look at you- they look right through you always thinking. They do not see you as an equal-two legs and pretty small overall-not like a moose or bear. They can appear and disappear in seconds without a sound. The pack moves like it is one mind-each has its own job to do. In tough winters they would come into town and eat the dogs chained to their dog houses. Some would say their Dobbi or other big dog would just kill a wolf found hair and such in the morning. They dont fight fair-they hunt/fight as a pack. And when you see how big they get-wow! They were always a treat to see-if they wanted you too.

We started when she was 9 weeks old. Every day Monday to Friday for 2 hours. She hid in the bushes for 3 months even though we had her in the shy and small dog area. Finally, one dog got her out and started playing with her. She was instantly over her fear of dogs from that day forward. Now, when she sees a dog, she instantly goes into pounce position so they can play. ❤️ 🐾

I’m new, genuinely asking… you take a wold to a dog park!?!? As a pet sitter, that’s wild to me 😂 I don’t always have control over a small dog because of whatever reason, yet you trust a wolf!?!? I’d be the first person to cuddle the wolf if I saw them, so don’t think this comment is me upset or anything, literally just genuinely asking 😂

I started bringing her at 9 weeks old. You only have 4 months to introduce them to new things, or they'll fear it. My motto is, a fearful animal is a biting animal. I had to do all kinds of crazy things like wear winter coats, gloves, and boots in 90-degree weather. I had to make sure that when winter came, she didn't freak out on all these things. She still hates gloves, though. But she's wonderful to all the dogs at the dog park, she's that girl that jumps in between two dogs before they start fighting. I don't bring her as often anymore because of the fence jumping. I go to a dog park about an hour away that has higher fences now. But the drive there and back is brutal, especially if I hit traffic. She's really sweet. If a dog at the park doesn't like her, she'll do everything in her power to change his mind. Now, all this can change when she turns two, so I have to watch her mannerisms and behavior closely. Once she becomes mature, she can decide she's the ruler of the park and start challenging other dogs. So far, so good. 😃 ❤️ 🐾

@@AbstractlyDelen I just want to note my appreciation for you as a person. Not only did you phrase your comment in an authentically curious manner without judgment or offense, the manner in which you described the tragic incident with the dog that bit you reinforces your pure & good heart - even after requiring hours-long reconstructive surgery, you explain that the culprit is the anxiety the dog had instead of the dog itself. I wish this world had more pure & good hearts, it’s important to celebrate those we find along the way ❤

@@MC-gt6yp Wolves are more calculating. They have to work in groups, often large groups of over 10 individuals, to catch a bison or other animal, each wolf takes her/his position and they communicate with each other who makes the move at the hunted animal and when. They all know their tasks and roles and work together to achieve a common goal. It’s like watching a group of children working on a school project (but everyone is involved). It’s mesmerising how intelligent wolves are.
