Thank you so much! I need to say though that this video is mostly about magnification. It does show that the sharpness isn’t on par with other solutions and that you lose light with some tools. Plus: no doubt a dedicated lens is more convenient. But: it definitely can be done and not everyone wants to spend money on a dedicated macro lens.

Hey ! Just wanted to add something, you can keep your aperture control while reverse mounting your lens, you just need to get an adapter like the meike mk-c-up reverse mount adapter which basically passes the information from your camera to your lens through a cable, it also protects your contacts and you can add a clear filter at the very tip of your set up to protect the inside of the lens from dust.

Thanks for the input, Ronan. Let me pin that comment so that people can see it.

I own one of these. Mine is a very cheap plastic thing from Aputure, and I have to say I don't like it for the very simple reason that it sticks out from the back of the reversed lens and limits how close I can get. It's possible to mount a ring flash to it, but at high magnification the flashlight won't reach the subject, because the flash sticks out beyond the subject. So I prefer the work-around.
@ronanvialon76952 жыл бұрын
@@skakdosmer I see why that would be an issue, but that also depends on the lenses you're using and how much magnification you need.

I have several collectible coins stored away just waiting to be photographed… An example would be “The divine comedy Paradiso 5 Oz coin” I would like to get some macro shots but haven’t decided how I’ll set it up. I’m not sure if you use Instagram but my thought is to post the photo in sections. When you go to my profile you would see 1 photo taking up 9 tiles. Then I would post a photo with the coin by itself including the reverse. If you catch my drift anyways…Might be something to make a video on if you haven’t already. Take care

Thanks for the work-around! I knew a different version of it, where you set the desired aperture and then press and hold the depth of field preview button while taking the lens off the camera. But that is extremely fiddly! I didn't know you can use live view instead - obviously much easier!

Thanks for your feedback. You’re probably like me from the pre-live-view-era 😁. Back then only higher end cameras had that button. Now luckily everyone can do it.

@@wolfamri On lower-end cameras such as the 1200D the "enter" button can often be customised to be a dof-p button. But your way is much better.

This was super helpful as i want to get into macro! Thank you.

Glad it was helpful! As a short tip: what brought the fun and the quality (well, at least I think it's quality 🤣) into my macros was a flash and a diffusor. They don't cost an arm and a leg, but make things easier and so much better looking.

Thanks for the comparisons and all of the information! Using just a 90mm macro lens and my Sony A7iv it sometimes seems that I get better looking images if I back up just a little for more depth of field and then crop the image afterwards for composition and to make the subject a little larger in the frame instead of getting as close as absolutely possible. Focus stacking takes care of this also but it's nice to get some great looking shots out in the field without having to go through that.

Hi and thanks for your feedback. That's totally valid and basically using your full frame camera like a crop sensor camera - that would create a larger depth of focus despite some people saying that's not correct (while it clearly is). If you want to up your game in regard to depth of focus, consider a flash and a diffuser. I've tested that in one of my other videos and it makes macro photography much easier.

You may try and use om-d 1 + 60 2.8 macro. This camera have in body focus stacking feature - great for macro.
@wolfamri2 жыл бұрын
@@UnluckyNewbie I already had a look at that, but it's kinda hard to justify getting another body, speedlight and lens just for macro photography 😬. But who knows, one day ... ;)
@UnluckyNewbie2 жыл бұрын
@@wolfamri this is really light setup, and you dont need speedlight if you use focus stacking at 2.8 aperture (5.6 fullframe dof eq)

That’s an interesting thought. But I like the light of a speedlight with e.g the pope shield diffuser. But I was already tempted to get an olympus 😂

Saw the thumbnail and had to click! I took a photo of this type of spider the other day. Only have extension tubes atm but going to try adding the Raynox this weekend.

Enjoy! They are the most amazing spiders to photograph because they sit still AND look in your direction AND look spectacular alienlike 😆.
