I did not see the Raynox improving the 85mm but would like to see the result at 2:1. The other question is how far you can go with long focus, large diameter lenses. I have done macro with a lot of tubes on a 600 just to prove it could be done. The Laowa 85 also works on tubes actually improving a bit since you gain a small amount of working distance. How does the Raynox affect working distance?

Thank you Michael - very informative. I'm going to give the Raynox a try - somehow I think it will be good for a beginner to macro photography. Good video. The Raynox DCR-250 is an excellent bit of kit and I highly recommended. Just one thing to note as others have pointed out, you do need to check lens combinations, as some lens designs don't work too well with close-up lenses. However, one thing macro photographers need to be aware of is that effective apertures using this and other close-up lenses vary from using a bare macro lens. So if you put this lens on say a 100mm macro lens, with the main lens set to infinity, you will get close to 1:1. If you have the aperture set to a nominal aperture of say f8 (be aware Nikon DSLRs show effective aperture, not nominal aperture, with coupled lenses) and take a photo with the Raynox DCR-250, with the main lens set at infinity. Then take a photo without the Raynox DCR-250, but the lens focused close to 1:1, for the same magnification, with the nominal aperture still at f8. You will end up with a different DoF. This is because the first combination will have an effective aperture of f8, whereas the second combination would have an effective aperture of f16. The reason for this is very simple. Close up lenses do NOT alter the amount of light getting to the sensor. Whereas if you use extension or lens focusing to focus to 1:1, your effective aperture will be close to 2 stops smaller than the nominal aperture. This effect, varies depending on focal length, magnification set on the main lens etc. What it means in practise is when using a powerful close-up lens like the Raynox DCR-250, for the same DoF at high magnification, you need to stop down a bit more, to get the same DoF as you would focusing this close with a macro lens' native close-focus or extension. This is why if you compare a photo taken with the Raynox at f8 to get to 1:1 and then compare it to the same native 1:1 ability of the macro lens set to 1:1 without the Raynox, also at f8, that the one taken with the Raynox will appear sharper. It's because the native 1:1 on the macro lenses, will have an effective aperture of f16 as opposed to f8 with the first combination. Meaning there will be diffraction softening on the bare macro lens focused natively to 1:1, but not much at all on the same lens at infinity with a Raynox DCR-250 attached, where the effective aperture would be f8. This is the reason that many people complain about the lack of DoF when using a using a powerful close-up lens like the Raynox DCR-250. To overcome this problem, just stop down more when using the Raynox DCR-250. It can be a difficult habit to break. Where with your 100mm macro, you wouldn't usually stop down more than f11 to avoid diffraction softening. But with a Raynox DCR-250, you might want to stop down to up to f22.
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell Жыл бұрын
Aha, very interesting! I learned something new today! Thank you. Might be the reason I perceive the Raynox shots as sharper.
@stephenbarlow2493

@@MicaelWidell It's not widely known. I actually discovered it myself by chance. I've owned a Canon MP-E 65mm for about 15 years, but started using the Canon 100mm L macro with a Raynox DCR-250 as it was more versatile. The limitation of the MP-E 65mm is that 1:1 is the minimum magnification, so if you come across a butterfly etc, you can't frame it and have to switch lenses, then you get pollen on the sensor. I photographed some Leaf-cutter bees, and whilst the images were very sharp, the DoF was a bit limited. So I did some tests, and found I had to stop the 100mm + DCR-250 down to f22, to get the same DoF I got at f11 on the MP-E 65mm. I then had a discussion online with several macro experts about this, including Lord V, Brian Valentine. I was proposing that because there is no loss of light with a close up lens, that the effective aperture is actually about 2 stop less than with a macro lens that focuses to the same magnification natively. Most said that they had not thought about it, but due to well known optical principles, it is almost certainly correct. It certainly went against all my intuition to use f22, which would normally result in horrible diffraction softening.
@stephenbarlow2493
@stephenbarlow2493 Жыл бұрын
@@psy007 The results only look sharper, because the effective aperture is wider, 2 stops at 1:1, but the DoF is shallower. Likewise, it is only brighter, because the effective aperture is 2 stops wider. I think if you got to 1:1 by putting the DCR-250 on a 100mm macro set to infinity to get 1:1, and then without the Raynox, set the lens to f5.6, you would get roughly the same sharpness, exposure settings and DoF on both set ups. The DCR-250 is also useful to own, because it works even on the macro lens to get more magnification and can be used on a wide variety of lens. They only don't work well on wide angle lenses and superzooms, where you are likely to get a lot of vignetting.

With a couple of extra adapters, the DCR-250 makes an excellent, compact tube lens for infinity corrected microscope objectives. So it's useful in extreme macro too. Edit. Those sets of filter adapters never contain a 43mm one, step up or down. You'll always need one if using the DCR as a tube lens.

Have you tried any Medium Format macro photography with a digital back? I've seen some for the Mamiya 645. With the giant sensor size, the diffraction limit doesn't start to kick in till ~f64. It might make stacking much easier. You could use a MF lens as a tube lens and an infinity corrected microscope objective and pretty much get any magnification between 1x and 100x. Just a theory of course, I've never tried it. Don't know if the image circle is large enough.

Coma, blurry image, chromatic abberations. I also heard about the same problem with other lenses (unfortunately I don't remember which exactly). Probably depends of the optical scheme.

The Raynox MSN-202 provides greater magnification than the DCR-250. I attached an MSN-202 to an OM System 90mm F3.5 Macro IS Pro lens on an OM-1 body. Many separate shoots of 99 bracket images at the minimum OM-1 focus alteration step between images produce a magnified maximum final image size. Unfortunately, they also consistently produced washed-out and poorly focused results. Removing the MSN-202 reduced maximum image size but resolved those two issues. I can overcome the darkening associated with extension tubes, but cannot achieve complete success with the MSN-202 deficiencies. Shooting in RAW increases workload and storage demands, but might (only might) resolve the washed-out appearance. The focusing issue is impossible to resolve and IMHO sharp focus is by far the highest priority in macro photography. Any explanations or advice welcomed, please. PS - One thing is for sure: the prices of these Raynox products vary considerably. Shop with care if you wish to avoid paying up to almost double the cheapest price brand new.

Inspired me to get one. Thanks! Very funny setup I'm using right now: An Industar 50-2 with a 35.5mm - 52mm step up ring, a Vivitar 2x teleconverter, a Pomiya 36-90mm helicoid adapter, and the Raynox 250. I'm actually very impressed with this. My main macro lenses are a Vivitar 55mm f2.8 and a Kiron 105mm f2.8, but the Industar with the Helicoid adapter is giving them a run for their money. The 2x teleconverter and Raynox 250 are just icing on the cake. But very, very impressive. And since the Industar is so light, being this tiny pancake lens, even with the helicoid fully extended, *and* with the teleconverter and the Raynox, it still feels like it's less than half the weight of my Kiron 105mm macro lens. I'm using it on a Lumix GH2 body. It looks absolutely ridiculous. And I love it.

@@MicaelWidell indeed it is. But you're spending time selliing an adpater that really doesn't supply images that are usable. Can't imagine selling large prints of any of the examples you show. ❤ terrific video. Thank you. I just purchased the exact product for my canon R5 paired with my 100 RF f/2.8 macro lens from canon. I put the lens on exactly as you specified. I cannot get the camera to focus through this lens whatsoever. What could be wrong? It focuses using the native RF macro lens perfectly.
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 11 ай бұрын
Hmm not sure never used it on that lens. Perhaps the camera gets confused by the added magnification. Try if manual focus works better. Also beware that with this filter you will have a very very limited focusing range at very small distances - you will not be able to focus more than a few centimeters away from the lens.

I was about to ask what about using it with a "proper" macro lens... then you answered that at 3:50. I have a Nikon 105mm (AF-D), so I guess if it doubles the magnification of an 85mm lens, I should have no problem with it.

Well, the product is called Raynox DCR-250. You should be able to find it on Amazon if you search for it. It looks a bit different on the images on Amazon though because they show it with the clip that comes with it.

@@MicaelWidell Thank you for your reply Micael. It could be my mistake as watching your video more, I see it's not 49mm both sides, the other side seems to be 43mm and hold with the clip. @@MicaelWidell following my reply to yours, I'm not sure the clamp can be used with the Rx1R. I may have to get the step down rings set you show to step dow from 49mm (The RX1R filter thread size) to 43mm to mount it. Hope it won't make the whole too heavy for the lens...

Another great video. If i understood right, the raynox works best if i set the lens to infinite focus? So if i use the laowa 2:1 100mm it wouldnt work if i set the lens to 2:1 the reach a magnification of 3:1?
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell Жыл бұрын
To get the maximum magnification with a Raynox you should also set the max magnification on your lens. The Raynox merely magnifies what your lens sees, you can see it is a cropping tool of your lens picture. With a 100mm 2:1 lens you should get at least 3x magnification with a Raynox added.

In general you get decreased working distance when you add magnification. This is the case here as well. When you shoot at 2x magnification you generally have a working distance if just 4-7 cm no matter what lens you use.
