As someone who's been using a 40% ergonomic keyboard for about 9 months: it's amazing and I can't imagine going back to a full-size keyboard. The fact every single functionality you'd see e.g. on a normal laptop keyboard is available without moving the hands back and forth, and just as fast because you basically just use the thumbs for more than pressing a single oversized spacebar. Including stuff like the arrow keys which are directly under the fingertips at all times. But beware, I'm a hardcore Vim user and am comfortable with keyboard shortcuts, so YMMV. The tip about not using blank keycaps is good for beginners - I started out with a ~50% keyboard with basically the same layout and number row, and even though I didn't use the number row it still helped to see at a glance which number is hidden where. Nowadays I can enter everything without looking at keys, so over time you can probably go for blank keycaps as well if you insist. Also in my experience it's possible to use a 40% keyboard and still switch to a standard keyboard now and then. The first few times it's a bit strange but over time the brain learns to differentiate between the two. So I can still use a normal laptop keyboard, for example, but it feels much more cumbersome because all the keys are spread out farther. And I went for Aliaz 70g switches instead of the 60g, but I can confirm those are really damn quiet. Comparable to an average laptop keyboard as long as the case is quiet enough.

Two points: 1. There's definitely an advantage (at least for me personally and the way I use the keyboard) to a 40% instead of a larger keyboard. Quick access to arrow keys, the number pad, macros and even controlling the mouse without ever leaving the home row by just pressing, holding or double pressing macro buttons is a HUGE DEAL. 2. Blank keycaps are also better and less confusing for me, since the E button (for example) isn't just E for me, it is also 3, Next Track, F3 and # depending on which layer I am on.
@matt92hun3 жыл бұрын
It looks like the perfect vim keyboard, if you are not really concerned with other languages. I regularly switch between several different keyboard layouts, so blank keycaps wouldn't be any less helpful than whatever static layout. A 40% keyboard just sounds a bit cumbersome when the language you're trying to type has more letters than you have keys on your keyboard. To French speakers I wholeheartedly recommend bépo, you don't have to break your fingers while typing and it includes Æ and Œ, which are missing from the default AZERTY layout for some reason. Azerty is the worst layout I've tried so far, it doesn't even support the language it was supposedly designed for. I use the term "designed" lightly here, because in my headcanon they just messed up the QUERTY layout before slapping on some French letters for the sole purpose of being different.

@marioschroers73184 жыл бұрын
Cheers Wolfgang! The keyboard topic really has been haunting me recently. Currently, I have a Vortex Poker 3 RGB ISO-DE in use, but will swap it for a Poker Black ANSI-US. Indeed, I realized way too late that the ANSI layout is not only superior in terms of economics (better symmetry, much nicer Enter key), but it is in fact far more suitable for text input in virtually all languages that use Latin script when used in conjunction with a Compose key, similar to vim Digraph feature. I think I will map my Compose key to Right Alt / AltGr. That said, I guess ortholinear layouts and blank key caps are not for me though. I first need to improve accuracy of my touch typing, but then I wonder, won't blank key caps kinda undermine the purpose of RGB lighting? As for alternative layouts, I have been digging into that as well in terms of research, but I wouldn't want to have ZXCV and HJKL swapped for OS and vim keybindings, so any other alternative layout won't have any point. BTW, respect for your language skills. For some reason, I learned how to read Cyrillic script (sorta), but don't actually speak any Russian. I think I should change that.

As a French person with a weird keyboard with blank keycaps who learnt to type on a Dvorak layout but then considered Colemak and is now using Workman, I don't fully agree that blanks is such a bad idea! It's somewhat easier to have the legends on the keys, but a piece of paper with the layout on it between your keyboard and your screen does the trick too. Especially if the goal is to learn to touch type! As for typing French, I made my own Workman keyboard layout with all the accented keys on the layer you get when pressing alt, including œ. I like it because Alt is in a comfortable spot on my keyboard and then I don't have to reach all the way to the number keys to type accents. But I guess it gets a lot more complicated when you regularly type German and Russian on top of that!

Also, if you set up your layers well, you're not sacrificing anything with a 40%. It's actually more efficient because you're bringing the keys to you. My 2nd layer has numbers on home row with 0 on thumb so you can type as fast as with a num pad, f keys are on top row and symbols are on bottom row. Much faster to access than a full sized keyboard. No sacrifices. Also, most used keys are on thumbs. Right thumb has spacebar, with enter and esc to the right of that, left thumb has backspace with del and tab to the left of that, holding space or backspace is how you shift and holding enter or delete is how you access the number, symbol, and f keys layer. By far, having shift on thumbs is the most useful change you can make, easy to capitalize a single letter or a string of letters with either thumb without having to having to do the shift dance that a normal keyboard layout makes you do
@73N5H13 жыл бұрын

Using both German and Russian on a 40% I just put the arrows on a layer and have Ö(Ö and Ä are swapped, so Ä is next to l)and Ü in the bottom right. I also swapped -_ with ß. For Russian you'll end up missing ъ, which is put on layer above ь - just like on your phone. There are DSA/XDA keycaps with proper printed legends, that visually support the layout. Sadly none are German + Russian, only either of those exist. Finally: The Planck is not using a plastic case, it's milled Alu. Personally I prefer the Planck, as it's lower in profile and is not angled. The newer versions are even hotswap and there is a low profile, aswell as a high profile case.

Russian speech blew my mind! I have Planck EZ and it was no effort to figure out where to place those three russian letters. I made one layer to store missing symbols in a way that mimics their positioning on an ordinary keyboard. Letters Х, Ъ и Ë are kept here too. The biggest issue is still to create a layout that helps write code in a convenient way while keeping similarity with ordinary keyboards. This sounds challenging but modifying layout does not appear to be a big deal. The benefit of small 40% keyboard size comes out to be noticeable after adaptation. It's really cool to have full-fledged numpad under one hand and I don't need to stretch my hands all the way to top row with numbers.

Inspired by your video I set up 1ms macros on my Anne Pro 2 so I could type the Portuguese characters çõãàê⪺ more easily using the Fn2 key, which I made to be right beside AltGr, this way I don't have to sacrifice the `~ key as a dead key as I use it a lot for programming. The more common chars áéíóú were already mapped to AltGr with just one key press on the "US Intl. with AltGr" layout on Linux. The good thing about Linux is that despite the ObinsKit limitations, I can input any char with macros just using the Ctrl+Alt+U unicode input mode (similar to the alt+numpad combo on windows), which is the case for ª and º

Would disagree about RSI. Heard somewhere that biggest issue is the "tilt", that your hands take when typing. So using stand is a no-no, and, naturally, high mechanical keyboards are much worse than low-profile. From personal experience this is true, but maybe its a question of getting used to, as I type only on low-profile keyboards, and thin notebooks
@ivanf.84894 жыл бұрын
Yah, but I also heard (my doctor told me) that when typing you shouldn't rest your wrists, you have to "levitate" them in a way that your hand and your arm makes a straight line, not an angle. You can only rest your wrists on the table when you are not typing. So I think if you do that the profile of the keyboard doesn't matter that much.

That language switch is a weird flex but cool as hell

I use the PUO layout (adnw.de). German letters are on a separate layer. I also highly use the layers 3 and 4 from the Neo2 layout. I only have one shift key on the left thumb and I use the thumbs for layer 3 and 4 and Ctrl

Maybe I'm a freak, but I'm fine with the blank keycaps on my contra 4x12 keyboards.

A blank keyboard shouldn't be such a big problem. You know most of the keys anyway, and if some key is really special, you could just mark it manually

Blank keys aren't an issue with traditional staggered layout keyboards, but having an ortholinear keyboard to get used to AND not having a visual reference - that's a pain, at least the first couple of weeks.

Hi, I saw that you have a Focusrite audio interface and I wanted to ask, did you have any problems using it with linux? I'm a musician and I also have a Focusrite so that's why I ask. Awesome video btw, cheers

I used to have zero problems with it, but lately I've been having this weird issue where PulseAudio would randomly change the sample rate, and all the audio would become low-pitched. Pretty weird.
@FranciscoMorales-qk4ux4 жыл бұрын
@@WolfgangsChannel That's really weird and problematic as the sudden change in the sample rate can bring aliasing issues, maybe there's an app interfering with the audio, anyway, thank you for taking the time to reply, you make awesome content.

I love weird keyboards too! But not as much as you apparently, I have a 60% keyboard and I love it!
