You beat my time! 55:38 was my prior best (since may 27 2021, on rumbl not youtube) I got word from a mod on speedrun site that the reason they won't make WQAE a category yet is since it's still early access -_- so it's nice to have competitor! Speedrunning against just myself is not so much fun! I didn't realize hunting wooed a mate so fast. I'll have to change my strategy there for sure! You seem to have a more efficient territory marking path than I've got. Is snarling when you pee useful?
@Cuyut3 жыл бұрын
Awesome! I didn't know there was much speedrunners for this game at all tbh. It started back in Feb when I just made a quick video testing out an idea, but never really went ahead and practiced on it until recently. If I had known about your video in late May, I would have started more lol. Snarling (Fearful Snarl emote) makes your wolf move faster, so I end up spamming it throughout the run. I just watched your run and it looks really good (great commentary too). I believe your territory marking path is okay but mine is just a bit more optimized it seems (best segment = 6:37). I believe the only reason it's behind is because you spent time killing your mate during that segment. I calculated your run, and you spent 3:15 killing your mate, and 11:32 marking territory (for a total of 14:49 for that segment). I saw that you set your graphics to fastest, which is probably a good idea lol. For the Amethyst Mountain segment, you can actually just go to Slough Creek by going back to the main menu and starting a new game, no need to travel to the Star; it saves a lot of time and makes runs more consistent. Overall, your raise pups segment is just as good (if not better) as mine, with only your Amethyst Mountain mating, travelling, and Slough Creek Territory pathing being a bit less efficient. The main (and most difficult part) is raising the pup to 20lbs, which requires a bit of planning. As you see in my video, I end up starving all my pups and mate while trying to feed my pup at the same time. Additionally, I end up making sure my pup goes to about 10-15% hunger before restoring them. The reason for this is because I want to be certain to deal with less coyote attacks as much as possible, since they of course can take time. Your strategy with feeding pups early can also work, but I feel that it can come with the risk of coyote attacks killing the pup and ending the run. I may have to test it out and see which method is faster; yours or mine. I believe they should be about the same, but mine has less risk associated with it. It's basically a balance of maximizing pup gaining weight, while also minimizing time spent awake. Yours favors weight gain, while mine favors less time awake. Here are some of my additional ideas: I try to position my pups near the Crystal Pond. This is because the rendezvous site is extremely close, it has lots of tall grass, and 2 elk herds and a bull elk herd routinely cross paths to it in their migration. So for consistency, I'd like to be able to hunt and kill an elk without having to get out of the hex my pups are settled in. Of course, the best luck (like in this video) is having a good carcass already nearby so that you don't have to hunt. As for killing your mate, I very much understand that it is a strat since they end up eating precious food. But at the same time, they also do help during coyote attacks, especially when there are two (as their flight meter increases faster, can cover two-different directions of retreating coyotes). I think it is possible to have a better run with the mate alive, though I have yet to test that out yet. For the Age perks, I'm still not sure what is most optimal. Right now, I get Strength and Speed and youthful prowess. YP to get more pups (more chances of a heavy pup) and to better scare coyotes once my mate is dead. For now, killing the mate seems to be the more convenient thing to do. Your method involves that happening while marking territory, which I believe is less efficient. I believe it is more efficient to get the mate to starve while growing the pup's weight, accomplishing two tasks at the same time. Although it does take a while, I believe in theory, the pup should still grow just as fast through regular feeding. Note that carcasses don't despawn if they are in render distance, so there is a point where the mate will not go to eat from it, while safely sleeping away from it while the mate dies. Now once the mate dies, I believe it should be safe to sleep near the carcass. Right now, the sum of my best segments adds to 43:58, which is still quite away from a sub 40 run. This includes a couple of lucky instances: Elk discovered near spawn, an opposite gender dispersal was hunting alongside the elk and thus became my mate after hunting two elk immediately, finding a bison carcass near the pond for pups to feed skipping the need to hunt, and more or less an 80% success rate in scaring away coyotes before they take too much time. I believe a sub 40 minute run is possible, and would require all these things to line up, plus some other lucky things I probably haven't seen yet. Perhaps uploading your run on KZbin with a live split timer would help build this speedrunning community more. I appreciate your commentary in the video :)

@@Cuyut Coyotes are for sure a problem mates help with, and for most runs I do use starvation to get rid of the mate. But I was trying to take an opprotunity when I saw it. I do think learning your path sounds good though... Beavers are pretty good food, but I think I may try to ditch that strat if I can't get the time on it down... They are a fast hunt, but still a hunt... There probably is an optimal belly. On casual playthroughs, I use hunger control to make my runt catch up to the rest, and to keep the biggest from outpacing the rest. Getting a 6lb. pup is also good luck to wish for, and seems more likely with a high diversity mate. I tried hunting during courtship and reloading in Slough Creek, and even though a lot of the rest of the run went wrong (coyotes) I had a very good personal time. Over 50 min, but under an hour. For sure, coyotes have killed runs for me before. It's a risk to loose a mate.
