WolfQuest Returns to Yellowstone: Slough Creek

Though not as vast as the Lamar Valley or as spectacular as Yellowstone’s geysers or waterfalls, Slough Creek is one of my favorite areas in the park. It was a delight to return there during our visit last August! Susan and I hiked up the valley, often bushwacking through tall grasses and dense woods, to gather photos and impressions of the area as reference for the new, expanded Slough Creek map in WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition. Slough Creek is, of course, where you establish a territory and have a spring litter of pups in the game. While we did not spot any wolf dens (those locations are well-kept secrets, to keep them safe), we did come across plenty of potential densites on our way to Second Meadow.

While in Early Access, we will be updating the game frequently with more features, multiplayer, and ultimately the Slough Creek episode with pups. The mobile version will come after the game is completed on PC/Mac platforms. We’ll then resume development of the next episode, Tower Fall (DLC).

if you make a type of jumping mechanic you might be able to jump over the logs. in a smooth transition from running to jumping and back to running.

The hit box for that would be ridiculous. They would also have to strategically revamp the layout and the herds would likely not be able to free roam as much as they would need to take specific paths. It would be smarter to make it a quick time event of sorts so that the brief pause can allow players to catch it and for less object collision with said hit boxes. However, that can take away from the focus and thrill of the hunt but I believe if the transition flows nice enough then it might work. This isn't a AAA game though so they'd be better off using their funds for other things in the game as of now (I would love log jumping/climbing in normal walk mode though).

I think it's crazy how closely the actual Slough Creek looks like the in game one. I get immediate flashbacks and can very easily recognize what and where everything in the game from the real life area

I think maybe lifting the feet higher and longer strides would be better looking, it's hard to animate jumping and that will add a lot to their plate. Though jumping might be a cool addition, it is a lot of work, and it's hard to make it look good. :D Just my opinion!

"Dude, have some dignity" says the man who just treaded through a lake without his boots, then turned back to his co-worker and proudly yelled "bring the pups!" like a normal human! On another note, the logs not being an obstacle isn't a problem for me - it would be far more annoying to keep tripping over it during hunts, and most of the time I'm too busy panicking about getting kicked in the head my an elk to notice it! That diagram showcasing how bigger this map is compared to the old one literally made me gasp - you guys are working so hard, going above and beyond, and it honestly makes me so happy to see this much research be put into a game. As I was watching the development for Amethyst Mountain, I was super excited because of the expanded potential of the game. Now that we've seen just how amazing it can get, I'm even more excited for the new game!

One thing I love about this video is the music changes in the background, for example, when you saw the bison it turned into predator music. I’m also exited for Slough Creek to be out! What I think would be cool while chasing elk and running through logs, was if there was a small automatic animation of the wolf leaping over anything that’s in its way. It’s such a small detail that it’s not at all important, but I’ve seen some games do things similar to that. And it’s probably much easier said than done. It was a small thought, But this Slough Creek stuff is far more exciting. I’m so excited for this though, wow!! ❤️

Hi I’m here for some top tips aka facts my dad told me and some suggestions on how I think the game should work and some glitches I found lol: 1: wolf sents are stronger when they mark in rain or under trees and plants and they last longer 2: I think it would be an idea to have the wolf pups when there first born not able to move from the den like in the start of shelter 2, I think it would bring you closer to the pups and stuff??? 3: runts are less likely to survive in litters becuase the stronger siblings will get food before them giving them a low chance of survival. 4: in wolf quest 2 there were birds and stuff that were at the dens, that’s unrealistic because they would one be scared or 2 the wolfs would kill them 5: just another suggestion for the pups is that they maybe sleep a lot? Because I don’t know if this is a fact but I imagine them to be very playful and get realy tired. On to glitches: The one glitch I’ve seen is I was hunting elk and I saw a cow elk, it wasent a calf and it said it was an adult elk and it was tall but it had the health of an elk calf (idk if this is a feature in the game on purpose if it is correct me lol) That’s it realy lol I hope maybe this helps with the game!

This is amazing! I've been a WolfQuest fan for 5 years, as long as i can remember. I've always wanted the game back then but was too shy to ask anyone to, and I didn't have my own money because I was too young, but this year i bought the original WolfQuest and got the Anniversary version for free! I am happy a game like this exists, it's really entertaining and you get to learn a lot about nature. The graphics are also very well done and look very realistic! All wolf and nature lovers should give it a try :) I already know they'll love it. Cheers to the developer/s and really excited for more features!

Question. Will there be a chance that the pups will grow up or is that a suggestion? That would be amazing if the pups grew up by raising them and then them choosing different packs, or staying with the family. Omg, this is so exciting!! I think Slough Creek has the potential to be even more fun than Amethyst, what with the pups and all. I would absolutely LOVE if we actually had to dig out our dens, as you mentioned. Any way to make each step more involved would be much appreciated by me, and others as well I think. Of course, going inside the den as well would be a huge bonus, as we could do some in den pup raising as well in their more early stages. Though, I totally understand that it might be too difficult a technical challenge.

@Wolf Lover I always play as a male, so I never considered the issue of being stuck in the den during that time, but your right. As a female, that might be pretty boring. Though, even a female doesn't just stay in the den the whole time. She does have to leave and do some things for herself, including hunting. And if you slept a lot while in the den with the pups, time would fast forward a lot. You could also have to keep track of your food intake so you could make sure you were producing enough milk while maintaining a healthy body condition. Then, there is also the bit where you would need to encourage the pups to leave the den daily after they reached a certain age. I know all that is getting very detailed, but just some thoughts as to how they could make it interesting. Though, just having to dig your den and guard it would be enough for me. The rest would just be an exciting bonus.

I can't wait to see the new update videos for Slough Creek! I love how you're extending the map as well not only does it make it feel more full and unlimited but it also opens up more opportunities. We would have more den sites and more stranger territories (maybe squeeze in a third one other than just two like in the old game). And if we get to choose new den sites there could be new actions to choosing a den like we could help dig the holes or animations of use squeezing into the den when we chosen one. And beavers and bison are going to be fun to hunt and don't forget the toads. Anyways keep up the great work!

This is great! It would be awesome to see a bunch of different den sites to choose from in game play. I went backpacking recently and saw two boulders beautifully stacked against each other with a space underneath where a den could be. It was like a smaller boulder standing upright, and a long, large one on its side against the smaller one. Thank you for sharing your adventure! That is a fantastic view! Love the sneak peek as well. What I would like to know, that with the expansion of map, dynamic fighting. Will multiplayer allow dynamic multi packs? As in, will all players be stuck in one pack like the old game caring for one set of pups. OR will we get the chance to pair up with another player, and compete against other players for territory, food etc as well as AI wolves, And if an odd number of players, can a player take up an AI mate to have a pack or team up with a player pair with their pups? Really hoping for a full dynamic idea to this expansion. Second thought, will multiplayer streamline between Amethyst to Slough creek? So say players all join up in Amethyst, choose their mates be it AI or another player, and they all get to the point of moving to slough creek, will the game auto load to the next map and section of game kind of like a portal to a new map like other games do? This way the game can seamlessly stream line all the way through.
