Hey guys, I just wanted to say I'm glad to see you back with some new videos. Even if I haven't seen the film that's being discussed, the conversations are always interesting and funny.

i'm not bothered about the film but it's lovely to see you two and special guest star, Winston. P.S. $220 million for this film is astonishing. i learnt the other day that Argylle was $200 million also.

"A single biscuit rolling around a tin". I haven't seen this movie and have no plans to, but this line made me laugh so hard that I must've looked like I was having a stroke. Only thing I would change about it - just to maybe make the metaphor more apt - is to have it be "TWO biscuits rolling around a tin". And just a note regarding Clooney movie you mentioned. It's called The American and it's a pretty good Clooney vehicle as far as those go - one of his better ones for sure. I own it. The location does a lot of the work. I only mention this because the source novel it's based on - A Very Private Gentleman by Martin Booth - is simply outstanding. I've read it like 3 times. But just to give you an idea of how far removed the movie is from the book: In the novel, the main character is very overtly and deliberately English; and his distinctive Englishness plays a major part in the narrative as it's all told in his first person POV. You can easily imagine a middle aged Albert Finney playing the role in the early 90's, when the book was first published. So obviously, then, when Hollywood got their hands on it they get Clooney to play the role and call it The American. I always chuckle at that - at the same time I kinda respect the balls to do it.

It's always hard to tell if something is successful [or what it needs to be successful] on streaming. Ghosted was the most watched film debut in Apple TV history [with 328,500 viewers-which is less than a prime time TV show in the UK] but Chris Evans made a vague comment that it wasn't the success the studio wanted it to be [saying 'the appetite was there but the movie was at fault]', but with something like Matthew Vaughn's Apple' film Argylle it's easier to say it didn't succeed [as it was a wide theatrical release but didn't crack $100 million]. It does feel like a lot follow the 'throw money at a wall and hope it sticks' approach at times. Daniel Craig wasn't happy that Knives Out 2 was only in cinema's a week before becoming a Netflix exclusive but in that case there is a strong fan base [the first made $312 million on a $40 million budget] so they certainly left 'money on the table' there.
@davidjames57923 күн бұрын
Hi again, James. Ted Sarandos, CEO of Netflix said that they made more money on Knives Out 2 on streaming than a cinema release would bring, so they're sticking with that model. Interestingly former Netflix Films Chairman Scott Stuber left to take up a similar position at Amazon because he was sick of Sarandos's approach. Amazon claim to be committed to wide cinema releases, starting with Red One. So hard to know who's most correct.

I saw Juror#2 the other night. Great film. The budget was $35 million. Oppenheimer budget was $100 million with a bunch of famous actors. Wolfs budget was $200 million? Bruce Wayne: It just raises too many questions. 🤔

There is so many streaming services now, I keep forgetting Apple has one. I'm so out of the loop with TV and Films, and that seems fine because it's rarely good from what I gather.

I watched a film on Prime called Haunting of Hollow Creek. Its budget was $500,000. That’s all!!!! All unknowns except a very random cameo from Burt Reynolds. Very odd. There’s some dodgy acting and the ghost plot could be removed but you know what, I actually found myself caring about the characters and I was emotionally invested by the end. Hollyweirds multi million dollar self promoting fart sniffing luvvie fests can piss off. 👊🏼
@davidjames57922 күн бұрын
220 million budget. Clooney and Pitt were paid 45 million EACH! Writer-Director Jon Watts was paid 20 million. That still leaves 110 million to make the film with! However it has become Apple's most watched of all time, and a sequel is in development.
@ValVerdeBroadcasting21 күн бұрын
Why? Why did you have to tell us that?? 😖🤦♂️It’s obscene isn’t it? $45M alone could pay 10 very high-end films that would employ a bunch of people.

@@ValVerdeBroadcastingwould you turn it down? Everyone has their moral compass until a dump truck of money is delivered.
@davidjames57921 күн бұрын
@ValVerdeBroadcasting whoops 🤭 so the rationale is that as streaming films can't offer backend returns to stars like cinema and physical media releases can, the streamers pay higher than normal to compensate. Dicaprio got 40 million for Killers Of The Flower Moon, and The Rock got 50 million for Red One, although that has been given a wide cinema release now. He'll probably need it given its reviews. Wolfs of course did have a cinema release but only for a week, so I guess the 45 mil still applies. It is puzzling how a mid budget character comedy can justify so much money, and for that matter be so successful, but this is all a drop in the ocean to Apple. They're worth 3.4 Trillion! I agree it is needless indulgence, and A24 for instance could make 4-8 quality, experimental films for that. Certainly worth more of a punt than buying Clooney and Pitt another house. But it's Apple's money.

If I am grateful to streaming it is allowing the recent Martin Scorsese films to happen given they struggle to be commercial hits [to the extent he had to resort to getting funding from the guys behind those awful VOD Bruce Willis movies to get films made before it] and Beverly Hills Cop 4 was an fun outing which might have had limited appeal in cinemas [given it's 30 years after the last installment].

Francis Ford Coppola before he sold his wine company for 600 million said that corporations like Ford for instance should fund films by great film makers that will never get studio funding because they won't make their money back. But corporations should fund them as a contribution to art history understanding they won't get their money back. He viewed it as good publicity for them like funding a statue. In some streamers, and non film corporations like Amazon and Apple have done that.

Director Jon Watts did the MCU Spiderman trilogy [hence directed one of the highest grossing films of all time in 'No Way Home'] but still isn't a name that would be know to the general public.

I've not seen this but the director Jon Watts did make a good film called Cop Car which cost less than $1 million. Everyone knows who Clooney and Pitt are so I guess that makes them stars but neither can open a movie these days with guaranteed box office.

The trailer got me interested and the first 20 minutes of the film was enjoyable, after that the movie turns into a real chore to watch with the introduction of a very annoying new character and not much of interest happens. Scenes drag on and it feels like they were trying to pad out the run time. The ending felt silly. It may have been better if Pitt + Clooney had a forced partnership to dispose of a few bodies over a few days in different locations and scenarios and the funny back & forth between them as they do the odd couple thing about how to be a cleaner in these different scenarios. Agree with the assessment it is a lot of set up for not a lot of pay off. More 2nd screen streaming content to have on in the background as you do something else.
