Welcome to Wolin!
This now somewhat small town in Poland's Northwest corner is home to remarkable history! Possibly being the biggest city in Europe at some point...if it is truly the mythical city of Wineta...
For sure Vikings settled here and the city was a successful trade hub...and very old...so for sure there are mysteries to be solved...

We, my wife and I, have been to Wolin several times, by both train and car from Szczecin. The Viking village is well worth a visit, it is an excellent reconstruction on the actual site of the original village. If you like living history then this really is a super place to see.

I’m glad I made it out there, it’s a nice quiet place, sad thing is I didn’t realise the significance of the history until I did the research after I was there!

It is honestly sad that videos like this don't get more attention. I drove from Bergen, Norway, all the way to Sweden and took a ferry to Świnoujście once. I am highly considering doing another trip, and seeing more of its culture and history in that surrounding area. Very nice video mate! Regards from Norway.

The Viking king of England - Cnut the Great - was half-Polish, and he invaded England with the help of Polish warriors. Fun fact, I learned that from the website of the British Embassy in Poland. Polish schools do not teach it or at least they didn't when I was a child.

In fact, it is a well-known fact in Poland that Canute the Great was the nephew of Mieszko the First (well, they taught me this at school), moreover, the Slavic and Viking princes quite often married each other for generations, and they cooperated, to a large extent, economically but also sometimes militarily. The Vikings did not attack the Slavs, and when they set off along the Volga River to the then extremely wealthy Kievan Rus (present-day Ukraine), they simply assimilated with the Slavs instead of plundering them, and also baptized, accepting the Orthodox faith. Even today, 20% of the Scandinavian genome are Slavic genes, and in Denmark this percentage reaches as much as 30% (almost as much as the percentage of Slavic genes in so-called ethnic Russia, in which Finno-Ugric genes predominate, just like the Finno-Ugric vocabulary in the so-called simple Russian). At least that's the conclusion of a large study conducted across Europe in 2000-2003.

@@alh6255 indeed, Wolin was said to be a large trading post at the very least, certainly a safe haven for Vikings! I didn’t think about the DNA makeup the way you describe it! But it’s awesome 😁 I have some Viking routes myself…so you never know I may get some long distant Polish royal blood from there 😉

I recommend visiting Wolin during the Festival of Slavs and Vikings then you will be able to see the truly living Skansen. If you are interested in various Polish traditions, history and culture, before a trip to a certain place, check if there is a fair or a local cultural festival organized there. Then you can get a lot of interesting stories and trivia about a given place. 👍

It’s a good point, I mainly travel in the June season before the major holidays start to cut some costs and have a calmer time…though I do want to see more of these fairs and re-enactments going forward!

Not far from Wolin island, on the island of Rügen (West-Slavic/Polish, Czech - Rugia, now in Germany) for approx. 800 years (until the 12th century) was the largest temple of the Western Slavs, to which Slavs from the areas of present-day Poland, western Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia and partly Hungary, Austria and present-day eastern Germany made mass pilgrimages. There was a gigantic statue of the god Swarozyc, looking at the four corners of the world (he had four faces). In Wolin, in the times of Polish ruler Mieszko the First, there were no Germanic areas, only Slavic ones, just like to the west of this island - Berlin, Lubeck, Leipzig, Rostock were founded by Slavs and their names are also Slavic. There were principalities that were West Slavic but didn't want to become Christianized for a very long time - unlike Poland or Czechia. Eventually, by the 12th century, they were absorbed by German counties and principalities. Only the Christianized Duchy of Pomerania, with its capital in Szczecin, survived longer - it was taken over by the Germans (Brandemburg) only in the 17th century, after the death of the last Slavic prince.
