As a child in primary school (1980s), I remember going on excursions to Wolston House. It fascinated me back then and I can still remember walking through every room and being in awe of how people lived and how it was immensely different to the world I knew at that time. I'm glad that the house is still available for all to visit.

Thank you Marianne for a great video. As someone who did quite a lot of research during my time there as a volunteer, it was refreshing to see that you had also done your research. The number of times I had to correct people’s assumptions based on stories they had been told. I’m still not certain they believed me and probably to this day still believe things like ‘this is where the superintendent of the mental hospital lived’ or ‘this farm was named after the mental hospital’ 😁

Oh I am very relieved to hear that! Thank you! I did a lot of research and double checking. Even the heritage register entry gets a lot wrong!! I still remember hearing the old chestnut “convicts were locked up in the rooms under the house”… even though it was built after the penal colony closed! 🤦🏻♀️

Great video! I got married there in 1984. Stood next to the hitching post near the fig tree for the ceremony and signed the register at that fabulous dining table. Extension leads had to be run from the information office for lights for the reception, as the home had no electricity (or running water). The present Cafe annexe did not exist at that tme. Thank you.

That was great Marianne! It's a fabulous place. I remember going there for the 1st time, almost 30 years ago I guess, one Christmas eve or close to it, and it was a little eerie, as they had next to the tree, a stuffed DOG dressed as Santa!! I was told by whomever showed us around, that the extent of the property was so vast originally, that it encompassed not only where Wolston park now is (I used to work immediately next to there, at the then Basil Stafford Centre), but even up to and including where the Oxley hotel now stands. Amazing place - pity they demolished the extra buildings, but as you said; they did things a little differently back then. Cheers, Steve

Not been there since I was a schoolkid!!! Reckon it was one house with, probably a separate kitchen. The 'gap' looks like a external chimney stack (to avoid fire spreading) and looks right for the period - including being whitewashed (perhaps)

13:15 Back in the latish 2000s, my soulmate and I were renting a late 1800s era Queenslander manager's home on the Archer's original property near Gracemere and Rockhampton. That place still had the copper and fireplace for heating it at the back of the house. The upstairs kitchen still had the nook and the old wood stove, as well as an electric stove that might been made in the fifties. Bakelite light switches and outlets. And all the wiring was inside pipes on the wall because electricity came to the property long after it had been built. It was like living in a time machine.

I remember wash day at Nanna's. She still lit the copper in the back yard to do the sheets then afterwards brought them back inside the laundry and put them through the wringer. I remember the blue bags! Back home my mother had a twin tub which used to move around the laundry when it spinned. Wonder when they decided that sheets didn't need to be boiled anymore?

Thanks for a great tour; the building and history is delicious! Simpson looked like a character! Yes, the painting does look like it was 2 separate buildings, probably the kitchen was separate from the living quarters. Just curious but what are the laws (at least in QLD) regarding family cemeteries/mausoleums when selling/dividing properties ?

There was actually a quarry quite close by, so they didn’t have to go far! It was later known as “Jeay’s Quarry” as it was owned by Joshua Jeays. It was near Simpson’s original house, where The Park Centre for Mental Health is today. mappingbrisbanehistory.com.au/history-location/jeays-quarry-428/
Thank you for your amazing story on Wolston House. I have always found this place to be very interesting and knew very little about it until I came across your channel. Sadly, I was only able to get 5 minutes in before I had to turn it off as I found the background music incredibly distracting from what you where saying. Thank you though :)

Prussian Blue used to make whites whiter wasn’t dye, it was finely crushed glass, which would be trapped in the fabric weave to do it’s light reflecting thing. We still call Monday…Blue Monday, because of laundry day. Whites and undies etc, would be spread over longish grass lawn to dry, as the ammonia chlorine expelled from the grass couldn’t hurt the brightness process. The Child Bride and myself were married at Wolston House in 1995. Spectacular Photographs. The huge fig in the front lawn used to have a hitching post in the shade, no longer there, sadly. Cheers. PS….I started watching you following the episode you did with Walkabout Rob. Top Bloke, Rockin’ Rodney, for someone who lives in Crim City.

Could I please make an appeal, for you to consider, on behalf of those whose hearing is starting to fail - could you please either lower or not play the music when you are talking. The music clouds what you are saying and what you are saying is so much more interesting than the music, Thank you.

Yes I am so sorry about that! We lowered it when editing for that reason and listened to it several times but in the final upload it was loud for some reason!
