Here's one: don't bother flying into Rotterdam/The Hague airport. It's just a business and holiday airport, so the only relevant connection to international travelers it has is London City. Good luck finding a connection to that without a cross-London transfer. Just go to Schiphol, it's much faster.

Or just go by Zaventhem by Brussels. It's way cheaper if price is an issue and though it's an hour longer with the train, it still has a direct train that stops there.

@@OllieV__nl I don't agree, there are some relevant connections to/from Rotterdam-the Hague airport, for example, to Barcelona, Lisbon, Rome, Milan, Istanbul and London, all major airports if you ask me. But definitely not to compare to Schiphol or Brussels airport of course, but still, if you manage to book a nice flight, go for it, l would always rather choose a smaller airport than a big one. P.S. : Zaventem is the old name of Brussels Airport, and it was not Zaventhem.

1. Don’t forget to mention you can take a Rotterdam metro trains (RET) directly to the beach at ‘Hoek van Holland’ and to the city centre of Den Haag. 2. Also don’t forget Rotterdam has by far the largest seaport in Europe (by shipping tonnage and by TEU’s) which also happens to be the largest seaport outside (east) Asia and that there are several opportunities to visit and witness some of that port activity. One way is by a port cruise of a few hours with ‘Spido’ which has their terminal at the north ramp of the Erasmus bridge. This will show you a few of the inner harbour bassins which are still in active use. An arguably better option is the FutureLand visitor center on the Maasvlakte. Maasvlakte is Rotterdam’s latest port extension and it receives the most massive ships the world has ever seen. The ports of Maasvlakte are built on an artificial peninsula in the North Sea which means that FutureLand is almost 50 km from Rotterdam Centraal. It can be reached after a one hour bus ride from one of the metro stations, but it’s probably easier to get there by car.

The best thing about Rotterdam is that the city center isn’t as crowded as in Amsterdam or Utrecht. The hotspots are more spread out through the city and that gives it a much more chill and less touristy vibe. I love it. Also it’s very easy to go around the city because it has a good metro/subway system unlike any other city in the Netherlands.

If you like a bit of Dutch history, the smaller city of Dordrecht is nearby Rotterdam (well connected by train). Dordrecht used to be an important port city in Holland back when the VOC was established. The old port isn't big by any means but wasn't bombed as much during WW2. Lots of old architecture remains that tell tales of those times of old. I guess Dordrecht would be fun for a day (2 at most). Dordrecht also has the longest shopping street in the Netherlands (Voorstraat) which starts (or ends) at the big church which is close to the old port area. There are interesting museums and tons of old tales to explore. You could also take a tour through the city canals by boat which i recommend.

Great vid thanks for uploading. I loved Rotterdam so many things I wanted to do and I only managed to do about half in my holiday, I would recommend to anyone going that you visit the Markethall as it was amazing but check up on which day you go as they have a market outside that is just as big if not bigger on certain days and there was plenty of interesting things there as well so essentially if you go on the right day the amount of market stalls/shops you get to see will double in size. I would definitely recommend getting the travel pass card it gives you access to the tube and tram network that will go all across the city as Rotterdam attractions can be pretty spaced out. You are right that travel connections are good but to be honest we only spent one day outside of Rotterdam on our holiday as there is so many things to do in Rotterdam that its unlikely that you get to see everything in any holiday there.

The rivalry between Rotterdam and Amsterdam is well known outside the country's borders. It's always a good idea to keep rivalries and conflicts in mind. Don't praise NYC pizza in Philadelphia. Don't presume the locals of São Paulo share your fascination over Rio de Janeiro. Don't talk about what an enchanting city Rome or Naples is while in Milan. Don't try and make friends with people in other parts of Spain by explaining to them how much you love Madrid. Don't tell someone in Marseille about the amazing things you experienced in Paris and do not call Stockholm the 'Capital of Scandinavia' (as the city actually brands itself) while visiting Copenhagen or Oslo.

Sow I am Dutch and went to study in Rotterdam. I would prefer Kralingen and Oude Noorden over Delfshaven. Delfshaven is really small and the city made it a tourist hotspot. Kralingen is the most pupulair quarter to live and combine it with large historical maisons, yachtshavens and a international student vibe. Oude Noorden contains a lot of historical architecture as well same counts for the Provenierswijk just at the other side of central station. You will have a very nice look with trendy bars in those three quarters than Delfshaven. I hope all travelers will enjoy the impressive city of Rotterdam. Besides nice video Wolter!!
@JaccoSW
@JaccoSW 4 ай бұрын
That might be true but Delfshaven is relevant, especially for Americans. It is where the exiled Pilgrims left the Netherlands in the Speedwell, to meet up with the Mayflower in England and took off for North America. The ironic bit is that the entire surrounding area was bombed by the United States AirForce in 1943 by error. They were planning to bomb a submarine base 4 km away on the other side of the river.

Rotterdam, aka RoTown. I was born there and went to school there. In fact, the Markthal is exactly where my school used to be! Nowadays, I live somewhere else. But I return from time to time. And, according to my wife, the Rotterdam language accent is always lurking under the surface, waiting to get out when in Rotterdam! An interesting detail (and not in your video) is Hotel New York. It used to be the shipping company's office for European emigrants before they left for New York. The building echoes the architecture of the buildings on Ellis Island! There was always a relationship between NY/NJ and Rotterdam. In fact, the Boymans Depot is built on a stretch of land called Hoboken. Yes, the NJ spot gets its name from Rotterdam. And a great walk: from the Willemsplein to the west, with the river on your left to the Veerhaven. That small harbour houses vintage yachts, surrounded by old architecture. From there, walk to the park under the Euromast. It ain't Central Park, but it has the vibes.

I would say: don't limit yourself to just the city centre. There is a lot to see, even the Dutch traditional architecture... Just not in the city centre. Delfshaven has been touched upon, but if you can: try the old village centres of Charlois, IJsselmonde, Hillegersberg or Overschie. You will not be disappointed. Stroll along the old Hoflplein railroad track, or go to the Kiefhoek, a small quarter that was designed around the principles of De Stijl and which is featured in a lot of books about architecture. Also: Schiedam is literally next to Rotterdam and is a cute town to visit.

Few minutes ago I finished watching what not to do in San Francisco because I plan to travel there in october. Now I finished this one about a city which is my home for more than 2 years now. I already welcomed many of my friends here and all liked the city, some of them even more than Amsterdam. Rotterdam has the nicest train station I have ever seen. Modern but wellcoming and unique. Although I like typical dutch cities it's a little bit still the same. Channels, bridges, old crooked houses. Yeah, it's very nice, but it's very similar if you go to Delft, Gouda or Utrecht. What I like about Rotterdam is the combination of old and new. Not whole city was destroyed during the germany bombing so not whole city is modern. If you want nice old houses go to Kralingen for example. My favorite street is Prinses Julianalaan. Full of nice big old houses, more like little castles. I mean although Rotterdam doesn't look like typical old dutch city, it's not completely modern, you just need to walk/cycle a bit further from city center. Only thing we don't have here are channels, that's true... 😅

About the rivalry between Amsterdam and Rotterdam - Amsterdam is beyond crowded. It's the only place I've ever gotten a migraine in for simply being in the crowd. It's ok as a city but it has a certain reputation for tourism and as such is also doing everything it can to discourage tourists that go there for just 'weed and Wall'. If you want an Amsterdam vibe but without the overwhelming crowds, historic town centre in Utrecht is the place to go. Rotterdam is also stone's throw away from Hoek van Holland (and it's less commercialised counterpart, Maasvlakte Strand, where you can also see the giant port of Rotterdam), Den Hague and Dordrecht (the oldest city in this part of Netherlands, which is right by Kinderdijk). You can get to Dordrecht area pretty cheap by Waterbus, takes about an hour and it's a regular service for commuters via ferry. One can even take a bicycle along for free.

If you like historic buildings. There is a building which is the only building still standing from the 17th century. Its actually pretty forgettable and unknown even for the Dutch. Its called Het Schielands huis or The Schielands House. Its really full of details and gothic architecture. But the sad part is is that its pretty hard to find. Its smashed between 3 highrise buildings and there isn’t a major road going there. It is in the center tho. So i would highly recommend going there as a tourist.

Sadly, the Schielandhuis has been closed for the public a couple of years ago. It was visited by Napoleon and Mozart. But there is a very nice restaurant.

Schielandhuis is actually visible here: 6:10. Besides, it is certainly not gothic.

Id say that the dont hype up Amsterdam suggestion is a good idea almost anywhere in the country. The general concensus outside of Amsterdam is that the city is way too busy and expensive and overrrun by tourism. Which.. is not untrue to be fair.

Definitely take the 10 minute train to Delft and have a day out there. From someone who called the place home for 3.5 years. Kinderdijk was lovely too. Went there during covid years.

I went to Kinderdijk as well during my 2.5 week vacation in the Netherlands (and 3 day stay in Rotterdam). Delft was a nice place to visit as well, and I spent the day there after checking out of my hotel in Rotterdam. I left my luggage in the train station lockers, and explored Delft before heading to Amsterdam for 4 days!

Take a waterbus around the harbour or east to the Kinderdijk, and Dordrecht, The beach (Strand) is on the western end of the light rail line to Hoek van Holland. Worth walking out to sea on the pier at the extreme end and watching the ships enter and leave.

Dont go to kinderdijk. Yes they have 19 windmills. But too many tourist. Go to Schiedam instead. Its closer and easier to get. Biggest windmill in the netherlands there. Also windmill museum, and one has a restaurant in it with really goodfood

The Amsterdam Rotterdam Rivality is something very serious i think, specially when you see Ajax Amsterdam & Fernoord Rotterdam it was often in the Past more like a war, then just a Football match. So never wear Ajax Merch when you are in Rotterdam it might save your Life.

@@luffegasen7711 not really into the harbour, it’s more like a city tour where you will also go into the river and float around. Did the tour once, I remember getting out with a hurt face because of the tourguide, that guy was funny! But i might’ve been lucky with that

Will take Rotterdam over Amsterdam 9 times out of 10. Amsterdam is tall houses and canals around every corner, Rotterdam is a complete change. As for Don'ts:- Don't go into a coffee shop looking for a coffee (Had to keep repeating telling my father "No, they don't sell coffee"

@joannewink7101 - I visited the Netherlands for 2.5 weeks in June - July 2024, traveling from Chicago, IL (United States). I was stationed in Rotterdam the first 3 days I was there (visiting Rotterdam on day 2), Amsterdam for 4 days, at a music festival for 4 days, and in Arnhem for 5 days. I visited Zutphen & Deventer the final full day I was in the Netherlands, before heading to Amsterdam Schipol for an overnight hotel stay. I enjoyed the modern architecture in Rotterdam along with the Kinderdijk windmills, but I really loved the medieval buildings in Zutphen & Deventer. I stopped for Dutch bread and a small apple pie at Van Rooyens Bakkerij in Zutphen. (I would have gotten the apple cake, but it was too much food to carry with me - the apple pie was a perfect portion for a snack, and very reasonable at €2.) Deventer was a neat town to spend a few hours. I stopped by St Lebuïnus Church and the Stadhuis before visiting the VVV in Deventer, which had a €2.5 English self-guided walking tour brochure. The brochure featured 36 buildings all near the weigh house (waag) in central Deventer, many of which were built before 1500. I even got some local cheese at Kasshandel de Brink, which I packed in my suitcase to bring home with me to Chicago! The only thing I missed about Deventer was a possible dining experience at The Lemon Tree (fine dining restaurant). I consider myself a foodie and would have loved to visit there, but I just didn't have enough time. I had moved Zutphen & Deventer to the final day I was there due to weather concerns, since I visited De Hoge Veluwe National Park the one day it was sunny outside (Thursday). I ended up leaving Deventer on the 6:15 PM train so I could retrieve my bags at the hotel in Arnhem, board another train toward Amsterdam, and arrive at my airport hotel in Hoofddorp by 9:00 PM.

Mark, I wish that you and other Americans would learn to pronounce Vincent van Gogh's name correctly. It is NOT 'Vincent van Go'! Native Dutch speakers pronounce it as 'Vincent vun Khokh' with a very guttural ending. The standard anglicised version used in most dictionaries is 'Vincent van Gokh'.
