I have to correct you on driving in New York. I am a lifelong New Yorker and yes NYC is congested and a pain because it is NYC but upstate New York drivers are fine. The place where driving is downright dangerous is Long Island. Drivers on Long Island are horrible and you must stay alert at all times. On Long Island the drivers seem to believe that traffic laws are optional and to be ignored. Love your videos but I have driven in every state in the country and upstate New York is fine.

Thanks, Mark!!! I grew up on LI and have live in LoHud Valley my entire adult life. Spot on saying we are like many states mashed together. And "Upstate" is actually pretty Subdivided: Catskills, Adks, Cap District, Finger Lakes, Southern Tier, North Country, Hud Valley, Western NY...etc. Great Lakes, Champlain and hundreds of Lakes and LI Beaches give plenty of access to water. Big Mountains, Thick Forests, so much outdoor beauty. And then there's NY City which is a whole different animal. I've covered every inch of the State and so many areas just have a distinct look. Chataugua County is gorgeous yet pretty much the edge of the world to entire state other than Western NYers. And we like our Exit signs :-)

Thanks for your perspective on New York--it’s fun to hear these views from an outsider. As someone who grew up in Saratoga/Albany and has made NYC my home for 20+ years, I’m a hybrid upstate/city person and I never get tired of exploring our state --even just the 5 boroughs of the city. Not too many states have a major metropolitan center, Atlantic Ocean access with beaches and boating, the Hudson River valley and all of its historic towns along train lines. Finger lakes winery region, old industrial cities, mountains, hiking (soo much hiking), the north country and borders with Canada and New England states. Definitely recommend using the Taconic State Parkway in place of 1-87 when you can and you can drive through the scenic farmland of Columbia county too. And thank you for understanding that New Yorkers are helpful, but we’ve got places to be and we’ll let you know that! And upstate is a state of mind more than anything lol (but ask someone in NYC and it begins after the last subway stop in the Bronx likely) Based on your coverage of my beloved state, I’m going to check out your other videos.

Also don’t forget Belmont Park and UBS Arena for sports beside all of the things in neighboring Brooklyn and Queens. Long Island is huge and definitely long so be prepared for lots of driving and traffic getting to and from NYC first.

Great video. My first plane ride was to Buffalo on a business trip w/my mom and I remember being so confused thinking it would be fast past. Lol. Fast forward to several years later when I would visit New York city on my own, at least six times and year and comparing the two. I used to think the people were rude and everyone always acted like they were in a rush lol. Of course I began to understand it like you explained it and couldn’t stay away from New York; actually thought of moving here I loved it so much. I just can’t stay away. We’ve taken many a trips just do shopping in Time Square and Woodbury Commons. Im due for a trip very soon. Tfs.

Lived in Upstate NY all my life. With the exit numbers, the number go west to east and south to north. When traveling on an east-west highway, exit 1 is over near Lake Erie and get larger the farther east you go. When traveling north-south, exit 1 is along the state's southern border and get larger as you travel toward Lake Ontario or Canada. As for what defines Upstate NY, my pat answer is "anything above 189th Street in the City" (NY City that is). Actually the dividing line is pretty much when you leave the Cityscape and are in more natural (as in nature), surroundings. That's the closest definition anyone can give. With the wings, they originated at the Anchor Bar. And you're right, there's nothing like them. The Garbage Plate, a Rochester (where I live) tradition, is great. It originated at a restaurant called Nick Tahou Hots (pronounced Tahoe, like the lake between Nevada and California) in a hole-in-the-wall building. Almost every restaurant in town has a variation of the Garbage Plate on their menu, usually called just a Plate. Though, depending on where you get it, it can be a little hard on your stomach. So be prepared with your antacid of choice. One former governor like the Garbage Plate so much he had it as the meal served at his inaugural dinner. As for the attitude of Upstate New Yorkers, it varies. As with anywhere, you will find jerks mixed in with the really nice people.

We drove to Niagara Falls from North Florida a few years back… By the Way, West Virginia is beautiful. We stayed on the Hilton on the Canadian side and took a fun Viator day trip. Our next stop was New York City and it’s a very long drive so we were 70% on interstates the rest on local highways. I don’t remember the road but going through Herriman was beautiful. Years ago on business I was over there and joined a group from the Appalachian Mountain Club on a day hike hard to believe the Appalachian trail is 30 minutes away from New York City!!! We’ve been all over the city but most recently Long Island and Mark is right, Long Island is a great place to visit especially all the Billy Joel connected locations. Hicksville, Oyster Bay (Where Billy Joel has a museum of his beautiful collection of motorcycles), Planting Fields, Huntington, Stony Brook, Port Jefferson and more. I did have a rental car in Connecticut on another business trip and drove north on Connecticut seven then West to the Hudson River (around West Point) and then back down south to New York City. What a beautiful drive! Unfortunately we haven’t visited the Adirondacks, Catskills, Finger Lakes, Albany, the west side of Lake Champlain, the south and southwest parts of the state. And because of our route all we saw of Rochester and Syracuse were buildings along the interstate.

NYC here. We can seem a bit curt at times, but it's mainly because it's a fast paced life and we don't deal with pleasantries. If you need help, ask for it and most people will help. They'll just go right back to what they were doing before.

That first point about "New York not just being NYC" is a salient one :D The last two/three years or so I've transformed into a bit of an amateur geography nerd, and part of that was familiarizing myself with the individual states of the USA. I was using that _The True Size Of_ website and comparing state sizes to other countries, and the state of New York is roughly comparable to Romania. You could comfortably fit Northern Ireland or Wales within the borders of the state. So it's certainly bigger than many people might realize.

Great video! As a native New York State resident I would disagree with the driving part though. Driving in NYC is aggressive and Long Island is a traffic hellscape but once you get 30-45 minutes from NYC, drivers drive like anywhere else in the US. Oh, and thanks for pointing out that gas pump hold clip thing. It’s awful. We all hate it too. It’s fine in the summer, but I’m the winter when I have to stand there holding the nozzle for no reason I’m always contemplating my life choices and whether or not I could afford a condo in Florida.

I’m from New York City (Queens County). Here in the five boroughs (that’s NYC), we consider upstate to begin past the Bronx’s border starting in Westchester County. JUST KIDDING! The real answer is north of Poughkeepsie where the Metro North’s Hudson train line ends. Where you can no longer daily commute to downstate by train. Upstate NY starts with the counties of: Delaware, Greene, and Columbia. The Hudson Valley (ending with: Sullivan, Ulster, and Dutchess counties) and below are downstate.

Actually a lot of the east coast states created a combined electronic toll. It’s under a few different names but from Florida to New York it goes into your sunpass. So you can rely on that. It’s something from January of this year it went into effect. It doesn’t work through every state north and south but most of them so you can get by. In Florida it simply is your sunpass.

I've lived near Buffalo for most of my life, and I've definitely noticed whenever I'm traveling anywhere else, I have to specify that it's not near NYC. I'm general, people have no clue the Buffalo-Niagara area is more than 6 hours from NYC. Plus, the culture and food is completely different, it's much more similar to Midwestern cities than NYC. You're definitely correct on the "upstate" thing, no one can agree what that means. I would consider Buffalo-Niagara, Rochester, and Jamestown to be WNY, and Syracuse, Ithaca, Binghamton to be CNY. Not sure what "upstate" actually means Also, another don't to include - Don't explore the rest of the city of Niagara Falls, haha. It's ghetto as hell! New York state is just a wonderful slice of America! Central New York state is like central Pennsylvania about 100-150 years ago beyond Rochester. Just green, rolling hills, waterfalls. Here is the key when asking us New Yorkers a question or being next to a New Yorker (specifically NYC): 1. Do NOT ask someone walking very fast and focused any question. Only ask groups talking questions, not individuals 2. When walking walk on the sides next to the buildings. You don't want to walk diagnally in the path of NYC natives. 3. Walk fast. Always have money or card ready to pay. Don't litter on the street. ALWAYS look both ways crossing.

I live on Long Island. I get the best of both worlds. I can have my quiet space and can drive or take public transportation to the city and be there in 30 minutes. It’s true about the driving. Long Island has the worse drivers. Even the elderly drivers are aggressive. The upstate thing is true. Some people consider anything past the Bronx upstate. Others will call anything past Yonkers upstate or southern Canada.

In regards to the exit numbers, they are gradually converting to mileage based exits, but it’s more of a shock to us locals when they do it, so they do one every few years. I’m still bothered by a couple highways changing exit numbers on us.

we went on a school trip to NYC (from California) when I was 14. They told us not to look people in the eyes, and that when we're in line we should push our way through rather than let people go ahead of us, because then no one would let us in lol

exits were supposed to be linked up to the mile markers, the law went through to change that 15 years ago but it's slowly changing. In Ithaca, there's a parking spot near the ticket machine, I pull into that and pay and then exit. Upstate NY is everything outside of NYC to many but to other's it's the northern 50% of the state.

Even as someone who doesn’t live in the City, any time I’ve ever visited I find myself getting annoyed at the same things. People walking around cluelessly, either on their phone or taking pictures, or even just standing in the middle of the sidewalk. Then you try to go anywhere and there’s a huge line, I personally don’t understand why people decide to move there and pay the absurdly high rent price that comes along with it… to each their own! I’d rather move to the middle of nowhere, I enjoy my peace and quiet lol

Another tip for a NYC deli or bodega: don’t wait until you get to the register to start reading the menu and take time to decide what you want…you WILL piss of the locals, especially if it’s lunch time. Start reading the menu as soon as you walk in and have your shit together when it’s time to order. Also, the Hudson Valley is another wine region in NY, not just around the Finger Lakes.

They use a wireless transponder that is linked to a prepaid account ("Ez-pass"), or they take a picture of your license plate and mail you a bill (with a hefty surcharge). Or, if you have a rental car, they bill them and then they come after the renter for it. (And, it is a great backdoor way to increase government surveillance of US citizens.)

He mightve forgotten to mention Thousand Islands because in NY state should def go there and could also use passport there to go to Canada. We were at Thousand Island for 2 nights and I remember going to Ottawa from Thousand Islands for few hours and then coming back to USA. Ottawa was great and Thousand islands is good esp the town of Alexandria Bay.

You can get busses from NY to Boston, Philadelphia, DC, etc. I did a day trip to DC by bus from NY a few years ago and it was fine - driver was a maniac though. I think if you want to go through the country or small towns anywhere though you're ideally going to need your own car, or perhaps cycle. When I compared train Vs bus, train was a bit pricey and not much quicker.
