I'm very interested in this movie digitizer as I have an entire box full of 8mm and Super 8 home movies from the 1950's to the 1980's. A lot of sentimental value. Just wondering if it has a USB port that I can plug into my computer, and if so does it come with editing software?

I just got this a couple weeks ago, I did 30 reels. They were all 8mm (not super 8). Remember you can use the zoom in and out option. I zoomed out on one of the reels and found that the picture frame extended to the left (over the feed holes) which actually made the video size 16x9 instead of 4x3, however the top left and top right corners were missing because it is the tracking holes. I LOVE this unit! I have been watching for one to be available and affordable, you cannot beat the price with this unit. This is the first one I found that cost less than 1200.00.

I think this also takes out the risk of leaving or sending off your film. Costco transfers film..but it leaves the building..home movies too valuable to let get lost by some mistake.

Super8 film was generally shot at 18 fps (frames per second), not 16. However, some Super8 film cameras did allow for varying the filming speed, such as 12 or 24 fps (but never 16 from what I remember).

You beat me to it...She’s half right, though. For silent 16mm and 8mm film the standard frame rate WAS 16 FPS; for Super 8 the frame rate was increased to 18 FPS. The good news is that apparently this device simply stitched the frames and encodes the file to play back at 29.97 FPS instead of either interpolating or doing some kind of pull-down to fix the frame rate, so while your finished video is MPEG-4 encoded, it has the right number of frames. So the output is at the wrong frame rate, but it’s correctably wrong.

Why the big compression? 720 is great, but why ruin the picture after you've got it? Is it so you can get more footage on a flash memory card? That's pretty stupid.

Hi I have just got mine and it doesn't seem to scan like yours or other videos I have watched. It should scan like a clock regularly at the same pace mine knocks off several fast frames then skips some, some it scans a few times before moving on. The end result is jumping all over the screen. I take it I've got a bad one.

I read somewhere... It encodes at 30 fps because the microprocessor that does all the number crunching is hard wired at 30 fps, and there isn't another chip in existence that will encode at a rate you specify. It's 30 or nothing.

Just purchased from Amazon and waiting for delivery in a few days...I have about 30 reels of reg 8mm to run. This seems like my only cheap option for needs! Btw, as the reel fills with film during the rewind, the circle gets bigger as the film builds up on the reel which makes it slow down .

I got a Wolverine. It works fine for most of the film except: If you have video with a bright sky and dark ground (typical outside video over a long distance) the scanner can't seem to make up its mind regarding light intensity such that about every 8 frames it goes dark for a few frames and then lightens up. So it essentially flashes. I could not find any method to stop this and my editing software doesn't have a fix for this. Old film curls from side to side and becomes stiff. The device doesn't flatten the film and it gets out of focus. Using a sprocket to advance the stiff and warped film constantly fails because of the curled up edges coming out of the sprocket. I have film going back to the mid 40's and from the early 50's to 1944, I have problems with degraded film. Oddly some of it works fine - B&W, sepia, and some color film especially if it is thin acetate. The images are there, but the acetate doesn't want to feed through the device. It would be nice if they would give a bigger take up reel than 200 ft.

After finishing can you just use a 50 foot reel with the finished product and keep using the new ones as the take up reels? Assuming the reels aren’t labeled? That would save time i think 🤔

Hmmmmm. A few issues with this review. You focus too much on aspects of the machine that don't matter. Who cares if the device is noisy? The issue of it being slow is kind of negligible. As long as I don't have to babysit it. Once it starts, it should do its thing. What matters is: how good is the scan quality? Is it reliable? How well can the scans be plaid back / converted for use elsewhere?

The speed, after scanning with some 8mm film scanners, is higher than the original speed. For some, after scanning for Mp4, it should be reduced to around -60%. Is that also the case for the Wolverine?

A lot of the old Standard 8mm films run with 16 fps (frames per second), others with 18fps. Super 8 amateur film run usualy with 18 fps (or 24 fps). Professional Super 8 copies of cine movies run always with 24 fps (same as the original cine movie.) To slow that down to the right speed is just a qustion of a good software.

the 30fps should be corrected with computer, this is not the right speed. Silent amateur camras ran at 16 fps, most of the time, this incluse 8mm format. Some 8mm do run at 18fps. Super 8 runs mostly at 18fps, but you can fin it sometimes at 24 fps. So most of the time you should chose 18 fps. Also some special cameras used "half speed" modes in order to save film at the expense of fluidity, you can find 9 fps or 12 fps. There also exists cameras who used a higher framerate in order to be compatible with PAL or SÉCAM television, wich include 25 fps ( each frame repeated twice ) and 16.66 fps ( each frame repeated three times ). Above this it is possible to find cameras who shots at 36 fps or 54 fps, those framerates are used for slow down special effects, and the aim was to project those films at 18 fps or 24 fps. Well to sum up, try to rely on the camera or it's manual, and if you don't find it, the general rule is 16 fps for 8mm and 18 fps for super 8.

I might buy this. But if you actually have a 8mm projector you can simply project it on a white surface and video it with a digital video camera or even your phone on a tripod. It will even pick up the sound if you have it. That's what I have been doing.

@redsanders8754
@redsanders8754 5 жыл бұрын
Doing so is the least expensive way, assuming your projector bulb lasts - replacing these old bulbs is expensive! However, you'll end up with an irritating flicker in your captured video. If you have a bunch of 8mm and/or Super 8 film, using the Wolverine is an middle of the road solution. Or, as the reviewer and others here have said, you can send your film off to a lab. But, you better do your research because some labs produce videos that are no better than what you get from the Wolverine, and possibly worse! Some labs will produce as good a video as possible, depending on the quality of the images in the film you send them. If you are not ready to research the different means labs use to capture film, then buyer beware. Even if asked, hopefully prospective labs will truthfully tell you what method they use. Lots of dishonesty out there because of peoples' ignorance.

If you want something still professional but better than the freebies, such as Movie Maker, go with something like Magix Movie Edit pro. You can get that for under $100 bucks and it has capabilities to edit and slow the 30FPS frames down to make it look normal and is very easy to learn.

You have to change the speed then. 30 fps / 16 fps = 1.875 times faster than it was filmed. Thus, simply slow the speed down to 16 fps / 30 fps = 0.533 x slower or 0.5x slow mo and it will do the same thing. No?

30 fps is the video frame rate not the shutter speed, 16 or 18 is the shutter speed that 8mm & Super 8 run at. From the spec, it looks like this unit will play your film at 20fps after conversion. If you have less than 30 small reels, we can convert it professionally at much higher quality for about the same price or less. createmydvd.com

Just my opinion: Looking for the "cheapest" should not be the only factor when transferring what undoubtedly is precious family memories. Costco and the like just put your reels into a box and sends them away to be transferred. But of course if this is the ONLY way a family can afford to have their precious family memories transferred, then it will do an ok job.

You're wrong 1080p or 4k ie easily done from film. You're demonstrating a inferior product. The equivocation of film to video resolution is nonsense, that's why there are allot ot movies shot on film from the 1930s-70s that are BD 1080P qnd 4k Full res. FILM is light captured NOT pixels or lines. If the lenses, film, lighting were of high quality you can have any video format you like with quality equipment. Obviously not for these $300 for that you get junk like this. Point is you should have said this machine is limited because you get what you pay for, and if you want quality results find proper film lab and ask for 30 second samples before paying . Less hassle and whatever resolution you want. 8mm and 16mm can easily goto any existing video standard nativley (without phoney upscaling)
