I had ordered the CD based on one song, Shadowmaker. The CD arrived one day as I was heading out and I anxiously slipped it into my car's CD player. The Awakening began, and I was impressed but when Hammer of Wrath kicked in I was absolutely stunned. I imagine anyone who came in earshot of my car had a laugh at the old fart sitting there with Lovebites blasting, smiling with tears running down his cheeks. I had found my new favorite band. I couldn't stop playing it. And that was the studio version--the live version is better!!! I'm pretty sure it will be a top five Lovebites song even if they release 10 more albums in my lifetime. And I hope they do!!

As others have said, The Awakening was composed by Miyako specifically to be a concert opening mood setter like it is used in this video. The rest of the group liked it so much that they decided to make it the opening track of their first full album to be followed by the second track, The Hammer of Wrath. Miho cowrote The Hammer of Wrath as well as Break the Wall, so you can see the influence she had in Lovebites' thrash songs. My belief is that Fami got the job, not because the band thought she was somehow better or different than Miho, but because she was the equal of Miho. The new bassist audition had three rounds. The first was the band looking at hundreds of audition videos submitted by bassists from all over the world playing to an audition track. From those hundreds, Lovebites invited just six to a formal audition, which was round two. Included in the six was Inchinose (my favorite from the few candidates who posted their audition tapes to KZbin) and Aya, both fantastic bassists. Lovebites chose Aya, a pick bassist, and Fami, a slap/tap young phenom (I had no idea who she was prior to the official announcement), as the final two candidates. For the third and final round, they were to play three songs with the band - The Hammer of Wrath (you saw how bass heavy it is), Golden Destination (another song cowritten by Miho that has an unrelenting gallop) and Shadowmaker (an extreme speed test composed by Miyako). I think Aya was immediately at a disadvantage being a pick player and having to tackle the two Miho songs. Fami had never before played bass using three fingers but by the time of the third round, she had mastered it and handled the gallop like she had been doing it for years. I ordered the edition of Judgement Day that included a blu-ray with a 35 minute documentary about the audition and also Fami's final audition playing the three songs with the band. The mix on the three songs has the bass up front which is likely how the band wanted it when they listened afterward. Fami knocked it out of the park, not because she did Fami things, but because she sounded just like Miho.

I think now it‘s time for the more emotional side of lovebites. There are the so called 3 E songs: Epilogue (full ballad) Empty Daydream (power ballad) Edge of the world (progressive master piece) A Frozen Serenade also shows another side of them, it‘s hard to describe. It has a short Part in the middle where Miyako plays the piano and Midori spanish guitar ❄️❤🐺

Love that you're loving them! Soft A in Mee-Yah-Ko if that helps. Think someone else mentioned it to. They don't do a ton of thrash, but what they do is next level. It doesn't matter to me. Their heaviest song IMO is "Dissonance" off the new album (no music video). My favorite song by Lovebites (my favorite song by any band) is "Judgement Day" off the new album, a phenomenal title track and music video, and the best solo run I've ever heard.

You are correct, "Awakening" is actually the entire instrumental opening part, including the heavy part. Where they come in live is "Hammer of Wrath."

I'm late replying to this one. Love, love, love Miho's bass tone and you get to hear it here (but also in that section in Break the Wall). Great song! She wrote Thunder Vengeance, which was the opener for this show, Zepp 2020. Highly recommend checking that one out. Haven't seen Fami live yet (outside of her own channel), but I will miss Miho's headbanging. She's all-in when she does it. She was also a big contribution to songwriting. She's got a great voice too, which you can hear on Empty Daydream (love that song - highly recommended). This (Awakening - Hammer of Wrath) was actually the start of the encore. They can open a show too, let me tell you that. They can also hype up an encore! Literally my favorite band on the planet right now. Hammer of Wrath vs Break the Wall? Which is my favorite? Yes.

Fami is awesome, but comparing her to Miho is like asking me to choose between two favorite styles of ice cream. Miho is awesome old school headbanging with plenty of groove and finger picking. Fami is new metal, occasional slap and other techniques. Love them both. Asami's little metal scream to open this number is gold.

I agree, both Miho and Fami are excellent bassists but have different styles, Fami is new and as far as I can tell more versatile so that makes her a great asset, but time will tell. Miho as a founder makes her more established and no body can deny her playing capabilities because we have seen her many times. Miho will never be forgotten and will always be loved and I believe she is pleased with Fami as her replacement. Big shoes to fill and so far Fami is a perfect fit

Hey Gary! Love your reactions to Lovebites. I'm an old guy who gave up on popular music about 30 years. I've been listening to mostly classical music since then. One day about 2 years go I saw a Lovebites video on KZbin and have been hooked ever since. They've also led me to the whole Japanese metal scene which is alive and doing well - not like here in the West. There is a very active music program in schools in Japan, so they learn music from an early age. It certainly shows. There's none of that 3-4 chord music in Japan - it's very complex and always done extremely well. I love metal music again. One suggestion for you. You might want to react to their song "Judgement Day." It's off of their new album that was released in Feb. The entire album is fire. No ballads, no slow songs, just face-melting metal. One of the best new metal albums to be released in many, many years! Keep safe, and peace!

Soldier Stands Solitarily blew many of us away when the new album came out this february. Some say it‘s the best Lovebites song ever, or even one of the best metal songs ever … Miyako apologized to Haruna and Asami because of giving both such a big challenge to play/sing it

I can't help but keep looking at the Anthrax patch on your jacket, because if you listen closely, this screams Anthrax. You could take this song, take out LoveBites, put in the classic lineup of Anthrax, from around 1986 (Among the Living), have them play it, and it would sound exactly the same. That's how good these ladies are: when you can not just get the vibes of another band, but can replace LoveBites with that band, and have it still sound the same. Slayer (Set the World on Fire, Break the Wall, Thunder Vengeance, all written when Miho saw Slayer perform), Holy War (Iron Maiden), Judgement Day (Yngwie Malmsteen), their covers of Judas Priest and Helloween.. they are that good.

I recently saw the first of the two Tokyo gigs and they came out to Awakening/Hammer of Wrath. I’m extremely fortunate because I was one of only about three westerners I know of at the two gigs combined, but guess what? The second night, by which time I was in Kyoto, they actually played the heavy section of “Awakening”, something I’m pretty sure they haven’t done before, though obviously that’s just what I believe, someone please correct me if I’m mistaken. I’d always thought that that would sound wicked live…but like I said,I’m in no position to moan! (The emphasis is on the “A” in Miyako, so phonetically it sounds like MEE - A - KO. …similarly, emphasis is on the first “A” for Asami and again, the “A for Haruna. Seems FAmi was destined for Lovebites when she chose her pseudonym!)

Let me correct you a little bit more to correctly pronounce Miyako's name. It's Mee-yaa-ko, the "a" spelled like you spell "jungle". The combination of our Fire Queen Midori and Ice Queen Miyako is indeed interesting, but really they're the best duo guitarists we have in the world right now. Starting from the second EP "Battle Against Damnation" (2018), she introduced herself with the full name Miyako (Mi-ya-ko)

Both songs are from the Debut full album from 2017 Awakening from Abyss. Miho did write some of the songs but she brought in Mao to help with the compositions and collaboration with Asami, Miho, and Midori. Miyako on the other hand is the one who writes most of the songs with about 50% + of compositions. Mi-Ya-Ko the a has the same sound as awesome
