On the one hand i agree that cats or any pet can provide comfort, companionship and entertainment for senior citizen. But on the other hand I'd always be worried what happens to them if the owner goes to the hospital or dies. It's actually why i decided my current pets will be my last. I don't have an extended family that i could ask to take care of them, and i would hate to think of my pets alone and abandoned. For some, me is all they known their entire lives.

Doreen Smith: three years ago we adopted two cats from an animal rescue center: An 8 year old male and a 10 year old female. We presume that the cats were maltreated by their previous owner, the male is missing some teeth, one of his ears is standing askew and he has a scar on his nose. And the first weeks at any sudden movement of ours both immediately hid under the sofa. The first days the male was hiding away under a bed but then on the fourth day he showed up by peeping around the corner of the living room just as Nugget does at 3:08 in this video. Since that moment he has become the dearest cat we ever had. We can recommend everyone who plans to adopt a cat to adopt an adult one.
@PutinsMommyNeverHuggedHim2 жыл бұрын
@@f.zijlstra9195 Bless your hearts! And how has the female reacted?
@f.zijlstra91952 жыл бұрын
@@PutinsMommyNeverHuggedHim The female cat reacted quite different. She didn't hide away and immediately found her own place on the sofa. But she remained very standoffish. It has taken more than two years for her to become (again?) a lovely little cat that likes cuddling. She now loves cuddling so much that we sometimes find her intrusive. Both cats enjoy the garden. The male one likes sitting in the sun and playing with dry leaves and chasing butterflies and little insects. The female likes sitting in the sun as well, but her great outdoor activity is catching mice. And that she does extremely well.

I went to an animal rescue Center to adopt a cat, there was one who walked up to me and wanted to play. She was so small and i assumed she was a kitten but the staff told me she was 10 years old. Her previous owners left the cat at the shelter 5 weeks prior to my visit because they wanted a kitten instead... Nobody wanted Tara because she was a senior. She is now 13 years old and she is the cutest snugglebug ever. I call her my furry tummy tumor because she wants to lie on my stomach every day for Naps and cuddles. I am so glad i adopted a senior. If she dosen't get the attention she craves she Will carefully meow at me until i scratch her ears. She needs to visit the vet once a year and get her teeth cleaned, but that is a responsibility i Will gladly take to keep her healthy and happy.

It’s nuts and infuriating that the previous owners discarded their cat like an object or a piece of trash they didn’t need or want anymore because they felt she was too old. Honestly if I were the shelter I would have taken the cat but refused to let them adopt another one. If they’re gonna treat their pet like a disposable object then they’re not fit to have one.

I'm a big advocate for adopting seniors as well. Everyone wants a kitten, but older ones are usually passed by. Even ask your vet and they can usually give you one pretty quickly. I adopted an 8 yr old girl my vet said was brought in and they just didn't want her anymore. She was having issues with the other cats they had and they were going to put her down, a perfectly healthy, lovely kitty rather than even trying to re home her. The vet took her and knew I was looking for a kitty after my previous one had passed away. In less than 8 hrs after they brought her in to have her put down, I'd agreed to take her and she was mine. They said most won't give an older animal the time of day. She's been a wonderful gift to me and I'm so glad I have her. They didn't know what a gem they had. They hadn't taken her to the vets once since they'd gotten her as a kitten 8 years before. She was a strictly indoor cat, but they hadn't even gotten her annual shots and checkup. Unreal. She gets good, regular care now.

Nugget is thrilled to have you love him. Surely he had a home at one time. Thanks for choosing an adult

I am a writer and l can't imagine a sweeter love story than this one. Both the cat and the humans who love and understand Nugget are remarkably beautiful beings.

I love his happy trilling. He isn't comfortable with others but came right to you at the rescue. There's some sort of magic with animals we'll never understand. It's enough to know it's there. I am so happy for you all. ❤

I am so happy that you and your husband opened your hearts to this sweet boy. You have a deep connection with him. Nugget chose the perfect humans to be his family. Nugget reminds me of my dear sweet Simon. He was so special to me and my partner.

He is beautiful, aand soooo lucky to have found you. I believe many abandoned cats are grateful to be rescued and like Nugget, show it. But if a cat has been traumatized by its experiences it can takea very long time for it to overcome that and trust in humans again. Bless you for taking him.

that *motor* on him 🥰 wow! _edit:_ I would've renamed him Tater 🤣 he's like, "These taters here. They're my pets." and we can be like, "Our cat lays eggs that are taters" 🤪

Now THAT’S a purr!! OMG I love Nugget. Senior fur babies are so wonderful. They’re usually already set in their habits and their personality, and just want some love, which they totally deserve!! My mom adopted a senior dog a couple years ago, and she’s the funniest lil thang. It was a wonderful decision.

Thank-you for taking him into your home and giving him love, what he needed and never got. He has you now, how wonderful and unique he is! I love that he has a safe place with his potatoes, is that cute or what! You two were meant to be, no coincidence! You were meant to love each other! Love to you both, wendy

Cats may not speak a human language, but they most definitely have their own, made up of their chirps and sounds and body language; those who can read it and understand them are already way ahead of the curve because it opens up another dimension of life. He's adorable!
