I used to work at a homeless shelter. One day a guy who lived there found an envelope with several thousand Euros laying on the street. He didn’t keep it, he went to the next police station to turn it in, the owner was identified, gave a very generous portion of that money to him as a finder‘s fee, that story was on the news in my country, and about two weeks later he had a steady job and an apartment, because people loved his integrity. That’s what I call Karma!

The thing is that if you tell someone about the 42K they're gonna want it. If you send it to the police station they'd be like "yeah, we'll need this." And then keep it for themselves. Everyone's complaining about the $1000 but most of the time when these things happen it's little old ladies that accidentally loose it in a donation box. Its usually their whole retirement fund and without that money they wouldn't be able to survive and giving away a $1000 is a big deal to them. And she just got a $1000 bonus just for doing her job which isn't very hard by the way. In the US you're technically supposed to make a genuine effort to return any money that you find to the person that lost it. If you decide to keep it without trying to return it it's illegal.

So one day I was sweeping the warehouse, I work for a Polymers Plant, and I found a pair of apple earpods still in their case. I'm not sure how long they had been there since the case was muddy, scratched wet and when I opened the case it had water inside, so yeah It had been exposed to the elements for a while. I decided to give them to my only coworker, it was either that or throw them away, which is the lead since he owns an apple phone and I own an android. I haven't bothered researching if they would work with my phone since I personally think apple products are trash. Around 4 or 5 months had passed and someone else that works at the plant was telling everybody in the breakroom including my coworker and I how someone had stolen his apple earpods. So he tracked the pods with his phone, it turned out to be the pods he was using at that precise moment. Before anything escalated too quickly my coworker apologized and gave them back to the guy. Afterwards the dude just went up to our managers office and informed him that his pods were stolen. Anyways to cut the story short, those earpods turned out to be the ones I had found last year. We were accused of theft and got written up for it almost causing us to get fired if not possibly worse.
