My school's 6th grade History teachers created an entire day around this movie. Hidden Figures Day has every discipline doing something based on this. The entire grade watches the movie, then they rotate to each class for activities. In Science creates "rockets" then they go out and fly them. In English, they read about these ladies, then free write about how they feel about what they've learned. It's a fantastic event that students enjoy. ❤

@marynraven I'm so glad they are showing it. I'm 60 and grew up with a grandpa who was obsessed with space travel. We watched every launch and parade and he even bought a color TV for man's first walk in the moon! He threw a big party and I was 5 and got to stay up late to watch it. (Abd the moon walk itself. Black and white 😆) But back then you never heard of these great women. Its disappointing. My grandpa was never one to be racist or misogynistic. He always encouraged everyone to do their best no matter what it was you wanted to do. He thought that everyone should be valued in what they bring to the table-not what they were carrying in their pants or what color God painted them. His favorite TV show. Star trek! He said that maybe someday we would be that way. All colors or sexes working together. I miss that man every day.

The machine is only as smart as the program it's running. If you don't have the mathematician involved in programming the computer you're just generating wrong numbers really fast.
@perwestermark8920
@perwestermark8920 2 ай бұрын
Not smarter than the computer. But smarter than the programmers that wrote the program that tried to automate her computations. To write a good program that computes the trajectories, you need to be good enough with the actual math. And you also need to understand concepts like numeric overflow or cancellation errors. It's often forgotten that you can't just program a computer. You also needs specific subject knowledge about the task the program is intended to handle. To compute the beam loads in a building, you need the engineering knowledge of how forces applies to materials, the concept of material stiffness etc. So while the computer can sometimes be too slow for a specific task, a big part of the issue is to feed it good programs and good input data for the programs to compute on.
@BossDropbear

Agree with the other 2 ... computers are not magic boxes punching out automatically correct numbers. Having Katherine verify the IBM program numbers is spot on and she should be retained to verify every change. Going wrong 10000 times faster than before is not a win.

Despite the title to this video, she wasn't getting fired at all. She was working in this department but the first IBM Main Frame computer had just been brought on line. So she was going back to the department she originally worked in. The movie "Hidden Figures" was the story of three black women who worked as computers at NASA, which had been formed from several government organizations. She and the other two women worked for NASA until they retired. A really good story, women both black and white mathematicians, worked on the calculations that white male engineers were too lazy to do themselves, they considered doing the BORING calculations to prove the math was right, a job for secretaries which were traditionally female. This woman being portrayed in the movie was a mathematical genius as a little girl. In fact as others have noted there was some doubt about the accuracy of the splash down coordinates that the IBM Main Frame had spit out. John Glenn said if Katherine the smart one could verify the math he would go on with the mission.

@@smallgoon You mean sit around drinking coffee and shooting the crap with their fellow engineers, until the human computer either verifies the engineer's math, or comes back and shows the errors in their original mathematical calculations. That way they could concentrate on one small part, so as not to get the math from one part confused with the math from another part.

Katherine & "the other ladies" were the mathematical geniuses that NASA needed to do their missions. Glenn trusted her skills over the computer, and wouldn't go on the mission without her correct trajectorial calculations. Yet, he was "the Man" who called this woman a "girl" due to racism & his misogynistic ego, and couldn't give her the proper respect she was due. It's obvious who the "Smart Ones" were. (A room FULL of BW engineers & mathematicians.)

These BW contributed to major events at NASA, and yet their expertise was "hidden", never talked about, or learned in schools. The question remains: "Why?" Because society chose to depict the BW as being nothing more than a domestic servant, child bearer, cook, etc. But people want to claim there is NO "racism" involved. GTFOH
