She is very low income and months behind on her rent because of all of this. I have told her so many times that she is being scammed. She brought me her phone one time and asked me to show her how to block them. I did. Next thing I know our other neighbor comes over to talk to me and she had gone to her and had her unblock them. I gave up. I tried to help her and there's no helping people like this. They are so lonely that they will make themselves believe that they are involved with these people and they will do anything for that connection. @@mariepratt5844that's the thing - the elderly people who fall victim to these scams aren't the ones who have kids and grandkids they facetime with every weekend. they're the ones who have nobody. they're childless and widowed. the friends they used to see are dead or moved away. they feel left behind by the breakneck progression of technology in the last thirty years and will cling to anyone who has small talk with them. that's how you end up with somebody roped into laundering money for johnny depp or a computer technician cold calling her from norton. i've followed kitboga for a couple years and recently he was able to do something he doesn't often get to do personally - he was able to intervene directly with a woman being scammed. he was trying to see if she had adult children or neighbors he could explain the situation to so that she had somebody to support her as she processed what was going on. she said she has a friend that she trusts with anything. and she named the very computer technician who had been scamming her for seven years. that was her one friend. kitboga was able to help her and get her connected with a local senior program that has regular social events so she's not so isolated. that's really the key. isolation stunts brain activity in a very literal way.

@@marathon419 Yeah, that's what lonely people do, they often actually see through the lie, but their need, as a human, for socializing and companionship is stronger than their sense of reality. People should spend more time with their lonely family members, get them out of the house, take them to places that offer things for their peers. We are social by nature, and the damage done to someone's mind when they are isolated is well documented. We can't expect our elders to do it all on their own, but too many times that's what people do. They put their older folks on a shelf and forget to dust them off. Also, saying someone shouldn't be on the internet is ludicrous this day and age.. Everyone literally needs the internet for a lot of things, even many medical facilities count in apps, almost all of my communication with my doctor is via the internet. Filling my Rx for my ADHD is through the internet, even paying my rent and bills. It's not that people should stay off the internet, as that's blaming the victim, what needs to be done is more to stop these nasty scammers, or you know just people stop being trash and scamming elderly people. Though, at the end of the day, we should focus on the criminal, not the victim when it comes to people who should stay off the internet.

What I don't understand is why would she donate an NFT to the hospital instead of writing a check? That part makes no sense to me.
@DellaStreet1236 ай бұрын
I understand way too little about such things as NFTs, cryptocurrency, etc -- but I assume the hospital would try to sell the NFT because they need dollars, not .jpg files. To the best of my knowledge, these images have no set value, so they might not have even gotten something remotely close to 6000 dollars. Who cares if it's from Johnny Depp? It's just an image file.
@lillexus55894 ай бұрын
How much tax do you pay over NFT's compared to a written check when gifted?
@Spencer-wc6ew3 ай бұрын
@@lillexus5589you don't pay tax when it's gifted, but the hospital would have to pay tax when its sold. If she donated the money, she'd get a tax deduction, and the hospital wouldn't pay taxes on it. So in the taxes aspect, it's worse for everyone involved
