My cousin, who was 40 or so lbs overweight, suffered from back pain. She went to one Dr who told her to lose weight and exercise. No tests, just assumed. Her back pain did not go away so she went to another Dr who listened and did some testing. He found her liver covered in cancerous tumors. She died six months later. Dr’s need to listen more, assume less and test.

This story clearly illustrates that there's a weight bias in medicine. I understand that doctors have to consider a patient's weight as the culprit, but that shouldn't always be the end of the road.
@ancientsgate7 жыл бұрын
Yup. One look at an overweight patient and the sum total of their interest in that patient and any forthcoming advice always centers around (often begins and ends with) "just stop eating so damned much and lose weight." This is malpractice, there's no other word for it.

I'm glad to say that the medical world is changing. I finally got a primary care physician for the first time in 10 years and I thought she would immediately tell me I needed to diet and exercise more. She didn't mention anything about weight until I brought up that I wanted to get into shape. I've been obese for as long as I can remember, partly because I had an auto-immune disease that gave me hypothyroidism (meaning my thyroid wasn't producing enough hormones to help me lose weight). For the longest time I got the whole "eat less, exercise more" routine, but my newest doctor said "as long as the weight isn't negatively affecting your health, I see no reason to lose weight"

Wow! I suffer from ovarian cysts and i am stunned that cyst didnt pop! I know i managed to freak out a hospital when they thought i had a ruptured appendix but found a grapefruit sized ovarian cyst they had no idea about. Aparently they cancelled the rest of the days ops as they kept me on the table whilst the cancer specialist made their way through a blizzard to the hospital to confirm it was benign. That was a nasty one, i remember i felt tired and forgetful for months before i was bluelighted into a&e and afterwards i was wide awake. I dread to think how crummy this woman felt. So happy for her. Wouldnt wish it on any woman (men have no id about how much these things hurt)

601salsa - I hear exactly what you are saying on the pain threshold of ovarian cysts! Entirely too many doctors want to accuse a person of weight gain like they only sit around and eat all day long without looking further into your medical history and testing/imaging and acting medically correct ... it’s a vicious cycle everywhere 🤨
@irenemax86925 жыл бұрын
That may be a dermoid cyst. They are solid, not poppable. I had one, 7 inch diameter, never found out what it weighed. Prior to my ending up in ER with excruciating pain, my GP had told me it was fat, or IBS. I was given peppermint tablets to relieve digestive issues. Then doctors in Emergency room organised ultrasound, etc.
@tailsofpearls3 жыл бұрын
Cyst usually just means a mass of any kind that has definable edges/ is one single unit in medicine. We just tend to associate cyst with being fluid filled because of stuff like cystic acne but they can be solid too. Her case was likely completely solid.

@@cerystalgaming84 that still doesn't take away from her other point of if she had been going in for check ups at the gynecologist then they probably would have been able to detect this earlier, and since this started as a cyst on her ovary, I would assume she would be able to feel something there long before it got to this level. Not saying the doctors should have done more sooner, but she also missed a bunch of the warning signs herself, and, imo, she should have at least noticed it wasn't just fat if she had been on a healthy diet beforehand. After all, it would be strange for someone to gain weight like that with a healthy diet and exercise unless there is a medical condition to go along with it.

It was in the same month & year of this woman. She had just had her removed & I am heading to removes mine the next day. The News came on a day I was due to have surgery to removes mine. For weeks I was fresking out. I never had any surgry. I could not eat & sleep. I was so worries about the surgry. I reads her story a day before I am due for surgry to removes my pair of mass tumors. She gave me hopes & takes away all my fears. I was unhappied but not afraid at all & was relaxed thanks to this woman's story. God was using her & God was with her. Dear Lord she carried a person & her weighs. I can not imagine the sufferings she has gone through. God bless her. I am told by a team member that to prevent it from regrowing they had to removed a body part, which make me not able to have children. Then while I was in recovery room a person told me that the surgent left the hospital because he accidentally cut off the thing that enable me to bear children. I am confused & in a lot of pains. I have one more to add to my miseries, being severely upset. Something else happened that caused me to have severe Back pains. Dictors & surgents are human. They will makes mistakes. Everyone wish to have a well trained & well learned person to works on you. All we can do is do checks up on them, carefully choose, & prays.

it’s sad that doctors didn’t consider other options because she was “fat”. So many doctors are fat phobic and overlook very serious diseases because it’s easier to just say, you’re fat and you need to lose weight. My mom has been overweight since she was a teenager, with big legs but a tiny waist and face. She has hormonal imbalances that cause fat to accumulate in the lymphatic system. Anyway, she went to te doctor once because of pain in her breast and the doc wanted to prescribe weight loss pills... completely disregarded my mom and wanted to do a lung scan. when nothing showed up obviously she just said she was fat and needed to lose weight. Years later, after the pain had left, she sees another doc for something else and he tells her that she has a lot of tension in her back and that it was probably a pinched nerve radiating pain to the front... like! that’s actually pretty minor compared to docs not fucking finding an 140 ovarian cancer...
