In this poem Donne has such a different tone from the other works you have shared. His words are more blunt, aggressive and cynical, which works! I may be way off... but I imagine John pacing around his room late at night talking to himself and wishing he had shared these words with a lady friend. Perhaps the date was not as satisfying or definitive as Donne had anticipated and now he is trying too sooth his ego. I am probably wrong, but I can see this poem as a conversation one may have with one's self. I was caught off guard with how suddenly the poem began. Then almost immediately it became clear that the robust romantic language often employed by Donne is absent. This was a delightful change of pace and I really enjoyed this selection. The Flea is still my favorite Donne work, but Woman's Constancy is fantastic.

I love the scenario you imagine, with Donne pacing and self reflecting after a not so satisfying night out! It definitely feels like a conversation with oneself, and I wonder what Donne would have thought about it being published. I can only hope that he would be glad to hear that his wit and intellect continues to delight readers all over the world, and that we may appreciate his craft not just for the romantic language, but for the style too, the diversity of his work astounds. As always thank you for your comment x
