Woman's long name doesn't fit on driver's license

A Hawaiian woman whose last name is 35 letters long said the state has told her to shorten it to fit on a state-issued ID card.
Janice "Lokelani" Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele said she has been carrying both her driver's license and her state ID for the past 20 years because her driver's license could only fit her last name, and even that was missing its final letter, KHON-TV, Honolulu, reported Thursday.
She said the state ID was able to fit her full name

I guess it's a case of typography versus practicality in design? They should have given the designer the specs of their longest possible name before they designed it. An alternative would have been to use ellipsis for her last name or to wordwrap it to the next line. I don't know who they hire to design these or any US/Canadian driver's licenses but they have never looked good in my opinion. I have a good feeling they paid these designers a hefty amount of money to make these designs as well.

Actually, she looks like native American too. Some of them has long names. JUDGING THEM IS BAD PEOPLE

She shouldn't have to change her beautiful Hawaiian name! How dare they suggest she change/shorten her name to accommodate their system! "Oh that big ol' mashup of letters doesn't fit, YOU should change them. Your late husband's last name can't mean THAT much to you, right?" It's similar to what happened to immigrants to the US in the 19th & early 20th century. I hope they'll find a way to help her get a proper ID.
