I used to attend Gateway but left because Morris sermons started veering towards the Prosperity Gospel, of which I despise and think is a major reason why the modern church has become Laodicea. I have heard people defending him saying, “It happened 35 years ago, he has repented and been restored.” To that I say….BS. First off, it was a twelve year old girl and if once isn’t horrible enough, this happened over a five year span. To make matters worse, when she filed a lawsuit to get money for counseling, the attorney said it was her fault because she was “flirtatious.” Are you kidding me? They countered with 25 but she had to sign an NDA. She refuse and got nothing. The man is worth an estimated $117 million dollars and he can shell out fifty thousand for counseling to his victim whom he ruined her life?!?!? Does this sound like repentance? Over the years in sermons, a teary eyed Robert would elude to sexual immorality in his past, brokenness, and owning up to his failures….or so we thought. Looking back he left out some key details that would have assuredly caused him to step down for life. Does this sound like a person laying his sins out in the open for healing, restoration and forgiveness to begin? Don’t you think his flock would want to know what kind of man they have leading them? He confessed behind closed doors but only in part. He describes his acts as a moral failure. What he did was no moral failure. He was a predator who preyed on a young innocent girl, multiple times for a long period of time, was caught, stepped away from leadership for two years, came back and built one of the largest churches in the US because of his charismatic personality. He has focused more of his sermons on tithing (which is not a commandment to any believer in the church, and no such commandment can be found anywhere in the New Testament) and has raked it in financially. He has spent 35 years alluding to improprieties, stopping just short of all the details so as to not reveal that he was a pedophile. He made no attempt to help the victim, yet instead slandered her and left her with nothing but trauma and I would assume, thousands of dollars in mental health bills. Then when the story breaks, he takes a sabbatical instead of coming back to address his congregation. These are not the acts of a repentant heart. That said, we are all one decision away from similar outcomes. We have all fallen short and have sinned, and certainly need Gods Grace. Jesus died for even horrible sins such as what he committed. However, he should never be in ministry again and certainly shouldn’t have had 35 wonderful years doing what he loved. Had he, the parents, and Shady Grove church leadership done what they were supposed to, he would have gone to prison, been labeled a sex offender, and never stepped in any kind of leadership position. Paul the Apostle said that he did not wish all to be leaders because they are held to a much higher standard. Gateway leadership and the board, who apparently were told ahead of time what he did, if true, should be held accountable as well. They knowingly put a predator in leadership. I am sorry but you molest a 12 year old, you should never come back from that. Forgiven, yes. Part of a body, yes Leadership role? Absolutely not. Not ever, ever, ever, ever, ever!

Maybe instead of living “The Blessed Life” he should have been serving time or working in some entirely different capacity. Folks, if you’re defending by saying “It happened 35 years ago” ask yourself this- how would you feel if it happened today? How would you feel if you discovered it was 35 years ago but perpetrated by someone you dislike?

I’m all for holding people accountable and ensuring justice, but when something was properly dealt with 35 years ago and a person has humbled themselves, repented (actively turned away from sin and chosen to live a right standing with God life), bringing something back up to stone them is not a reflection of Christ’s heart, nor does it come from Jesus. We serve a God who forgives and has used the most failable men all throughout history…King David murdered his wife’s previous husband so he could have her, Saul murdered thousands of Christians and both had an encounter with Jesus, repented and were saved & were mightily used by the Lord to do great things. Pastor Robert Morris is now and has been since he truly surrendered his heart to Jesus years ago a Godly man who truly fears the Lord. The Bible says, “we shall know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:15-20) and “ But if I do them, and you don’t believe me, believe the works so that you can know and recognize that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” (John 1:39) I was at Gateway church when it was at that small building in Southlake in 2008…I have watched the Lord grow this church and how it’s grown can only be done by the Lord’s mighty hand. I have been healed, redeemed, delivered and blessed by Gateway Church and pastor Robert Morris’ sermons…it has produced mighty fruit in my life and that only comes from Jesus, His anointing and being in alignment with His Word. “You will know them by their fruits… Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.” Matthew 7:16-18 The fruit that’s been produced in my life and in the life of millions are proof of God’s hand, forgiveness and redemption in pastor Robert Morris’s life. The Word (Bible) cannot lie, it is my solid rock and compass…it speaks and defends itself on what is truth & just period ✝️ The Word doesn’t lie that a “bad tree cannot produce good fruit”. If pastor Robert Morris had been actively continuing in sin, or had “hidden sin”, we wouldn’t see the “good fruit” so many have experienced while at Gateway, we wouldn’t see the “good fruit” we’ve each experienced listening to Morris’ sermons and see how mightily Gateway church has grown. Injustice has occurred, and that’s why there’s righteous anger at this sin and situation. The father of the victim, Debbie Morris, the elders at Shady Grove during that time period, and the elders at Gateway Church in 2005 allowed this injustice to stay secret and did not report it to legal authority or even help the victim pay for her counseling fees. In addition, the apology by Robert and the internal message sent to church leaders by Thomas Miller minimized the scope and severity of this sin. The timing of this announcement by the victim may seem odd, but it doesn’t make it any less true. Full responsibility needs to be taken by Robert Morris and the elders. Robert accomplished mighty works in the Lord’s name, but it’s time for him to step down and allow someone with a better reputation to take his place for the sake of the Gateway Church ministry. There will be a fallout, but it can be lessened if the right steps are taken.

In June of 1989, after a youth music minister at Prestonwood Baptist Church (John Langworthy) admitted to church officials that he had molested at least one student in the late 1980s; he was terminated immediately. Since church officials failed to report it to the authorities (as was required under the State Family Code), he was able to go on to become a youth music minister at a church in Mississippi. Unfortunately, he was later accused of abusing young boys again.
