From my experience (23+yrs married), what she is saying is that a women gets the “ick” when a man is constantly complaining about their work environment. They see it as a sign of weakness and that he may be unstable financially and/or emotionally. I encourage all men to always to work on themselves constantly (physically, emotionally, financially) and behave stoic around women. They will see you as a strong pillar that she can submit to (and she will).

I think the requirement for being content has always been there, just that it hasn’t been usually verbalized.
