Their motivation is to destroy their enemy or rivals. Hampir tidak ada saling menghormati. And that is why I left Silat years ago and moved into Karate. With your explanation about the philosophy of Silat (respect, self defence, self protection), I think I will have to go back to Silat. Thank you for sharing the video...

I like this man a lot he really change my perspective about martial arts, am a practicioner of silat my self too bad i got a hot temper if only i meet maul as my teacher i would respect my opponent more than what i did in the old days (one of my aim in a fight is to make him suffer n regret to ever mess with me), i got a small body n mostly my schoolmate love to bully me at school..n all of the anger is what makes me love to injure people n misused the knowledge i know about martial arts to avenge all my pain during the bullying days.. So mostly when i fight i would love to see my opponent having a disability for the rest of his life so he keep think about me all the time n the regrets he have for the rest of his love for messing with me.. There 3 kind of silat i learn in my hometown sumatra(silat macan), silat cimande, and silat tuo..most of the technique that he teach u guys is a basic incapacitating because that the rule silat incapacitating your enemy before they hurt u, u hurt them more than he is going to hurt u.. Silat is a very deadly martial arts just learning the basic like he teach could already been fatal..what if u truly get a secret art of each silat style just one or two of silat style secret..then u could misused it in a bad organisation to gain rank n reputation..but there is where am mistaken..misusing my knowledge about the art it self is already bring shame to my master n grandmaster which they hate me for what am becoming.. If only i hve a different perspective about itwhen i learn it..not being blinded by my anger n revenge, then maybe i coukd be a better guy.. I respect u sir Mr.Maul.. Luckily am a changed man now since i meet my loved one who change me to be more compassion n hve more patience on any situation am facing.. Up until now i didnt hve to fully fight n injured my enemy when someone is hvingbad intention toward me n my family just a simple gesture to show that am not one to mess with..using of some silat art on them but not to the fatal point of it..they will their brain if am better or lesser than them in martial arts without having to incapacitate or injure them to having a disability.. I pray for your health n all the good prayer toward u mr.maul

Even in the martial arts, the cultural tradition and philosophy of Malayan people are deeply rooted. It shows even with devastating blows there's always a reason why the blows are given. Even injuries has a deep philosophical and moral meaning. I guess this is what we're missing in sports. The sportsmanship and mutual respect to the opponent and their school of thought. Now people only want fame and glory and forgot ethics and sportsmanship. I hope moral values will be introduced back into any sports martial arts either MMA or kickboxing or boxing.

But one drawback tho. Silat isnt known for ground grapples. The main goal is to end the opponent, but there is no plan B if the opponent can keep fighting on the ground.
@lipatpandan4318

@@de0509 seriously bro? silat hv been for thousands of year & u think on the old days they didn't taught of groundwork? There are system for silat groundwork usually known as 'gelut'. The only twist is that eventhough they fight on the ground, they have the awareness that the other person might have concealed blade. And the groundwork system would evolve around the idea that u are grappling with attacker that carry a blade. Most sumatran silat have 'gelut' system in their style.
@de0509
@de0509 5 жыл бұрын
@@lipatpandan4318 Towards the end of your reply you said "Most sumatran silat have 'gelut' system in their style". I emphasize on the word "most". That means you yourself know that not all silat has ground grapples as a main thing. And you even added the word "sumatran". That shows you cant even guarantee that silats from other regions have sufficient groundwork in their syllabus. I still stand by my initial comment on how most silat not having ground work

@lipatpandan4318 5 жыл бұрын
@@de0509 well u are trying to play with words bro. Originally u said silat is not known to have groundwork, & we dont have plan B should the fight carry onto the ground. Which I already made it clear, silat do have groundwork. As to why I said most Sumatran, simply because I familiar with it, know it and can confirm it. Things I dont know I dont want say. But u said 'silat' by referring it to as whole silat (you know there is thousands type of silat rite?), that is already wrong.

Malay cultures are full of being respect and kindness. We call it adab. Even we as youngsters, our elders taught us not to challenge anyone even if we have the size and physical advantages. That's what make Malay special. It is different story for western people who always seeking challenge and fight any new dojos or new martial arts in their town. They only want to challenge with the intention to embarass the new dojos/ martial arts

I'm going to take what my mother-in-law, who is a historian, said to me. Back then, the area of South East Asia traded with China, India, and the Middle East. Before the colonization of Portuguese and Dutch, and even before the Sultanate in the Indonesian archipelago were formed, there was a kingdom called Majapahit. This kingdom had vassal states that runs from the Malayan Peninsula, to the Philippines, and even to Papua. The capital of this kingdom was located in East Java, now a province under the Indonesian Republic. Naturally, in a Kingdom or state, there'd be similarities in culture and tradition. Some words in Filipino's Kali has the exact same word and meaning in Indonesian, Malaysian, and Brunei language. For instance, Pukulan, meaning "a hit" or "fist" in Indonesia. Guru Maul, in his other video also stated that, the difference of stances between aristocrats in Brunei and common folks in the Sultanate are different. It was a product of social hierarchy as well as geographical aspects. In essence, we are product of our environment. And Silat and Kali are a product of both. And influences from different traders back in the day also influenced culture and martial and military arts. Did you know that some Silat in Sumatra and Borneo (the location of the Brunei Sultanate resides) is also called Kuntau/Kuntao? Why? Probably because it was also influenced by Chinese people who traded with the Malayan people in the Malayan Peninsula and Indonesian archipelago. I live in Palembang, Sumatera, and I can recall that my older cousin once talked to me about a Chinese descendants family whose member still practiced Kuntau near our home. It was in the 90s. My mother-in-law also said that she once saw a family feud of people of Chinese descendants near her house when she was a young girl that resulted in a fight using Kuntau. Some movements in Kali also resembles some movements in Karate as well (go check Jesse Enkamp's video on this). And also, a KZbinr commenter that I had a chat with said that, a Karate Sensei (who I don't remember the name is) even went to Borneo to study Kuntau. So, there you go. Food for thought.😄

Silat is the origin of the Filipino martial arts. When Spain colonized the Philippines, Filipino martial artists observed the Spanish martial artists and added some things like European sword and dagger techniques. The unfortunate thing is that in doing that, they forgot some other techniques that made it Silat. It's like pouring water into a cup that is already full. You will include some new stuff, but you will also lose some of the old stuff. In the Philippines these days, you have to find one teacher to teach you blades. Then you have to find a different teacher to teach you striking. Then you have to find a different teacher to teach you grappling. Then you have to incorporate everything together yourself. In Silat, it is already put together for you in one neat package.

Olden days or modern days, a broken jaw or knocked out teeth takes more time to heal than cracked ribs or bruised kidney (I've experienced all the above) and a broken jaw without medical treatment leaves life changing injury more so than fractured or bruised ribs or bruised kidney. Knocked out or broken teeth are life long injury whereas fractured ribs y bruised, blood passing, kidneys heal...In olden days men didn't strike so much bare knuckle to face to avoid hand injury from teeth imbedding into knuckles y infection costing one to lost a hand or arm. And bareknuckle punching face could result in broken hand, costing disability from working to feed family for long time, in olden days.

Silat is not about killing and destroying. It is about teaching painful lessons to enemies. Enemies can be friends in future. So don't destroy your 'future friends'.
