Rightly pointed out everybody that God guides you, shabbir ally was the reference through which he guided you. But here comes the main point shabbir ally is specialised in comparative study of religion (Islam vs christianity) but that doesn't mean he is specialised in the all aspects of islam. Example: you are having fever so you visit a General Physician Doctor who you felt was good so you became a regular at XYZ hospital. Later on you are suffering from heart ailment so you visit the same XYZ hospital & they recommend you to consult a Heart Specialist. So then will you say No No I came to this XYZ hospital because of thar General Physical doctor so i will consult only him? No right! You will go consult specialist doctor. Same way there are specialist scholars of islams whom you should consult just giving you some names : Mufti Menk, Nouman Ali, Dr Farhat Hashmi, etc.

MashaAllah, true there are good scholars like brother Shabir, I would love to share my humble research on Islam that hadith is wrongly declared as final word by anyone who finally wrote and published but the ( Claim of hadith) is more valid and appropriate to say and believe, since the people who recorded the saying and observation of Prophet Muhammad and they way all was recorded we can not accept it as legitimate. So, we call it CLAIM but not hadith.

Salaam Aleikum! Thank you for this. I am Christian but I veil completely. Why? Because Lady Miriyam is my model as to modesty. Christianity actually has a long history of Veiling, and until the late 1500s or early 1600s. This habit of going about with head uncovered is recent in the scheme of things (I grew up in the 1950s and 1960s and even as a child, my mum dressed me in my best including hat and gloves to go to church, because this is what decent Christian ladies did). I converted to Roman Catholicism and later Orthodoxy (I left Roman Catolicism because of all the innovations of the Vatican II nonsense). I have always preferred modest dress, so I always have worn a headcovering in churchnd often on the street as well, but about a dozen years ago I took up wearing a loose, ankle-length, dress and hijab. Lately I have begum wear a niqab as well because I believe after much thought and prayer God has led me to increase my modesty.. I found Dr. Ally's talk very interesting and informative. I will at least have a better idea of how to respond when men (and it is nearly always men, Muslim and non) ask me why I wish to fully cover. I don't fully why some Muslim men would think that I should want to run around with head unveiled or wIearing immodest fashions. Although my ex-husband died almost 30 years ago, we remained good friends after our divorce and (God bless him in Heaven), he never hassled me over what kind of clothing I wished to wear and in fact always defended me whenever I was hassled for wearing modest clothing and head covers. While still married, I asked him for permission to dress modestly, in long skirts and headcoverings and he said that if that was what I felt God was calling me to do, I should do so and that he had no objections. I pray God will lead men, Muslim and non-Muslim to an appreciation of modesty in women. Although I will not judge another woman for what she choose to wear, or not wear, I think that now, more than ever, a lady should be as modest as she can. I know that if I was a Muslim or Christian man, I would rejoice that my wife or daughter or sister has chosen to dress modestly and I would do everything I could to encourage her. I'm not religious and I don't wear hijab but it doesn't mean I'm a bad person. I'm nice and I don't do Haram stuff like drinking alcohol, smoking, dating, etc. But people judge me like I'm an evil person just because I don't wear hijab. Yes, it's nice to see them wear hijab. But some of them are not even virgin, they dated a lot of guys and drink alcohol. I know cuz I know some irl. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against them. My point is don't judge people based on the way they choose to wear as long as they are being modest and they don't hurt people. Leave us alone and stop being judgemental. Besides, judging people is a sin.

Agree 100%. Religion is mainly beliefs and principles while dress is just a secondary matter which varies according to circumstances and the surrounding society. While being strict is expected in conservative Moslem societies, a more practical dressing is more acceptable in western societies and could be more attractive for people towards the whole religion. I completely agree agree to the notion that some wear Hijab and do not even observe the prayers and commit grave sins, while others do not wear Hijab but observe the important duties including good manners, ethics and morals.

I don't understand the comparison here between wearing hijab & following important Islamic duties !!!! Allah & his messenger (pbuh) have described rules & guidelines for leading righteous life in this world that would be rewarded in the hereafter. Now for those who are partially following the guidelines & leaving the rest (as stated in the 1st line), both will obviously get rewards for deeds they have done as per guidelines and will get sins/punishments for the deeds they have done against the Islamic guidelines. And regarding judgement obviously that is wrong because we never know that person might be more pious in front of Allah than we are. But at the same time seeing a person doing something wrong & turning blind eye is also not encouraged in islam, infact it is part of islamic dawa'h that they should be explained in rightful manners the wrong which they are doing so that (if Allah wills) they can correct themselves....May Allah Guide us All to the Right path..ameeen

Yes, The best clothing is the Quran itself. I have met some Muslim sisters who are dressed in hijab, niqab, and jilbab and act in ways that are contrary to the teaching of the Quran. We, both men and women should dress modestly as ascribed in Quran but the conduct of all Muslims, regardless of the choice of dress should be representative of the precepts of the Quran.

I like this upload! Thank you! I want to start this comment by thanking you for reading it. It is not easy for me to say these things because I have received a lot of judgment for not wearing a headscarf anymore. Alhamdullillah I am well, and yet sometimes I still fear that maybe I got it wrong and will be punished. It takes a lot for me to admit that, but I am happy knowing that I am conscious of Allah! So, here goes: I notice that Shabir Ally actually notes that choosing to appear modest without a headscarf is acceptable. Wearing a headscarf is not mandatory in Islam. The caption of this video makes it seem like it is mandatory in Shabir Ally's opinion, however, I have watched several videos like this and he has specifically said that it is not a sin not to wear the headscarf. I wanted to point this out because I wore a headscarf for nine years (of my own volition and following the information I had at the time) and then chose to be a Muslima in public in a different way that was closer to the culture I grew up in (showing my hair). I loved wearing the headscarf and I love not wearing the headscarf! Both are meaningful to me. I initially thought, however, that is was mandatory and that I had to wear it. I learned later (through videos like this one, reading, and from fellow sisters) that it is not as straightforward as I thought. I had initially learned from people at my masjid and observation that I had to renounce certain things from my culture because they were un-Islamic without realizing the nuance that exists in Islam, and the history of increasing pressure on Muslim women's clothing and making what is permissible, haram (Dr. Ally talks about that in this video). I see where I went wrong and where I unnecessarily condemned parts of my history and my behavior/habits thinking that Allah did not accept them. The All Merciful, The Opener, has opened my heart to how beautiful my own culture is, alhamdullillah! My culture is diverse, vibrant, and beautiful! I love being from where I come from and I love being Muslim, and surrendering to Allah! I see the Quran (and this is a common scholarly opinion) as applying in every culture in every age and in every place. This must mean that cultural influences are acceptable while still maintaining the beauty and dignity of the faith and the deen. I wear modest clothing according to my culture and I see that Shabir Ally supports this view, especially his final comment starting at minute 11:00. I feel so much ease hearing his perspective and feeling Allah's support, while the judgement of others is still heavy on me. If the culture goes against Islam Then We Drew the line, What every Muslim must do is not accept customs blindly, rather he should measure them against sharee’ah. Whatever is approved of is permissible for him to do, otherwise he should not do it. The fact that people are accustomed to something is not evidence that it is permissible. All the customs that people are used to in their lands or tribes must be measured against the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Whatever Allaah and His Messenger have permitted is permissible, and whatever Allaah has forbidden must be abandoned, even if it is the people’s custom. End quote. Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Tafseer Soorat al-Baqarah 2 (299): Tradition does not make something that is not prescribed permissible, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “It is not Al‑Birr (piety, righteousness) that you enter the houses from the back” [al-Baqarah 2:189], even though that was their custom and they regarded it as righteousness. The one who takes something as a custom and regards it as righteousness has to measure it against the laws of Allaah. End quote. Dr. Shabir Ally Is Someone Not To Take Knowledge From. He's is Not A Scholar he's Da'ee And He's Not Qualified To Give Out Fataws. If You Go To Saajid Lipham KZbin Page He's Talks More About Him It's obligatory for every Muslimah to wear Niqab (Hijab as prescribed in Islamic teachings) in obedience to Allah and His Messenger, and so as to protect and maintain her honour, good conduct, religious commitment and chastity Hayah ie bashfulness, self-respect, shame, shyness, humility. @@mzs114 khimar is indeed mentioned in the Qur'an but when we through to know the meaning of this word,some say it refers to the traditional headscarf of that time while some say(I came to know this very recently) that it means "to cover". Even if we can take both the meanings into consideration the commandment,again the commandment is the "USE" of khimar to cover bosoms,even if it's a headcover and even if it's a tradition from so long,even if it is our identity,even if it's part of us,but the Qur'an states the use of it.

So, what is the answer to the question Dr. Shabbir has placed, at the end of the video? It seems that the topic is as inconclusive in my mind as it has been over so many years. Hey hina, hijab simply means 2 cover not the headscarf. Men during the prophet's time covered their heads as well. Doesn't mean men have to wear it as well. It was simply a cultural practice that they took on for their benefits There are many scholars who say women have to cover their faces or women must cover one eye when going outside. People also have to remember during the time of the 1st Caliphate that Arabian women would also need to work part-time outdoors when not tending to their family. It would be both impractical along with dangerous to move bags of food or other manual labor with a hijab, from what I’ve heard during early Islamic history Muslim women didn’t wear a hijab during sweaty work but more so when attending events with men outside their clan. Hijab as practiced today is based on a preislamic culture. Dr Shabir I wish you would address this topic. The women and the men would cover their heads since often times the homes didn't have roofs (nomadic areas), protection from sand storms, harshness sun. Christians, Jews, pagans all observed this regardless of religious belief. It was the clothing of the area. So when Allah said draw your khimar around you. He is talking to people in words they are familiar with. Notice he didn't say put on a khimar or something to that effect. Also the Niqab is absolutely not part of Islamic tradition.

I think you should look up vintage pictures of Muslims. Most of the women are completely covered and veiled. Even non Muslims women were fought to be modest. Pre1900 so only until modern terms is being mostly naked ok for both men and women.

Insightful topic and lecture. However, Shabir Ally didn't really delve deep into the Quranic stipulations of the veil for Muslim women the way I expected. For example, are there other interpretations for "the drawing of the Khimar over their bodies" as described in the Quran? Are there any historical or cultural contexts that are connected with this? Also, what should a muslim woman living in a modern age and society do when the wearing of the veil/hijab draws a great deal of discrimination, bullying, harassment, etc., as it is nowadays? These are the type of things I was hoping he would talk about in greater detail. I look forward to getting more clarification on all these.

Your first question needs correction,the Qur'an in surah al-noor verse 33 tells the believing women to cover their bosoms with "khimar",it states the use of khimar,you want to wear it too,you can but the obligation is to cover the bosoms and I came across some interpretation which claims khimar isn't any headcover used in the past but it means "to cover" and that makes sense too.

Well the answer is clear! Governments have no business to mandate what women should or should not wear. This applies as much to muslim countries as it does to western countries! Incidentally Islam does not require women to cover their head, so if they do so it is their choice and not a religious obligation!

So what you r implying is that a woman's face and hands are not her adornment? the last I checked they pretty much are.. Google Dictionary; Adornment:- A thing which adorns Adorns:- Make more beautiful or attractive. This translates into that any bodily part of a woman, that makes her more beautiful or attractive, is not to be seen by her non-mehrams.

To impose too much of women clothing requirement is not only unnecessary but also damage the core of islamic teaching. That will reduce participation of muslim women in society and even in the family life. I dont understand how wearing hijab prevents a woman from participating in society. Yes, she may be discriminated against by others for doing so but she can still be a part of society and wear hijab. Secondly, Allah in the Quran states 'O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. If you think about life, the universe, and everything objectively for a few seconds you might realize that the Qur'an is just one of dozens or hundreds of holy books in the world, and that the hadiths were transmitted verbally for two hundred years after the death of the prophet Muhammad before being written down. Then it's not a far stretch to stop and ask, "Wait, who was this Muhammad guy anyways? What is so special about this particular book? Salaam..in the Philippines for example where the climate is hot and humid, wearing the hijab is not comfortable. I think that the issue should be more of not using the hair to attract men, (for example, keeping the hair tied back neatly. In fact, in olden times as told by my late mother, married women used to tie their hair into a bun (so that men won't toy with it) and let it down only at night for their husbands. As for me, a revert, I keep my hair very short, do not wear make up and I do not bat my eyelashes at anyone . 😅😅😅😅😅

Head covering was an arabic culture in pre Islamic time and became part of Islamic culture. So in your country the tradition and culture are more civilised long before Islam came to your region. For example : Respect for elderly and women. In arabic culture women were treated as commodity and slavery were rampant. So be proud of your culture and tradition.

The verse does not say that women should wear a khimer or that the head should be covered, but that the bosom should be covered. By no stretch can you use this to imply that the head should be covered. That would be attributing to Allah a command He has not given! Allah says "We have revealed the Book to you which has a clear explanation of everything, and a guidance, mercy and good news to those who submit." (The Quran, 16:89). I assume from this that if Allah wanted women to cover their head He would have said so in a clear manner!

People have converted to Islam but have kept their older traditions. It is also practised by Christian African tribes. Bismillah. I think we need to read the Quran. The ayah of covering come after Aisha RA was the victim of backbiting and slander. The idea of covering is to protect the woman from those who wish them harm. I’ve seen women get catcalls as they walk down the street and being accused of “asking for it” this is no fault of the woman but why would you not take precautions. Just like you wouldn’t live your wallet or phone on the table or your front door unlocked saying that it’s nobody’s right to come into my house or still my stuff. There are bad people and their are people who wish other people harm. FYI men do have a hijab as well even though they may not follow it. On the most basic level men and women are different and that is that. Men don’t get periods they don’t carry babies. But that is why the woman can be a way for men to get into Jannah.
