Lovely to see Chris a bit on this. You certainly seemed to have a great time with Elizabeth Day - she seems really lovely. I like the books without the dust jackets - they look dignified. I do sympathise about keeping things succinct. It’s like that trying to write a synopsis for submission. I don’t really get on with ‘funny’ books. I think they must be really difficult to write as humour is such a personal thing. I enjoy the comments just a bit of the way in. I had a look at the start of Demon Copperhead and don’t think it’s for me but by gum it’s doing well. I love graveyards the older and more tangled the better. Sorry to hear about your Uncle. 🍿🍿

Reference the Women's Prize, I've enjoyed everything I've read so far for the long list and the only one on the shortlist I haven't reached yet is Demon Copperhead. My brain doesn't work well enough to give you one sentence per book (I'm very rambly!) but the top of my list was Black Butterflies then Trespasses and the lowest would be Pod. Not because I didn't find something in it... just because I felt there was more to take away from the other books. It has been another stellar year for the Prize though and some of the books really took me out of my comfort zone, but in a good way. I'm sorry to hear about your family and I hope your mum and Aunt are okay. Take care.

I am under the weather today and this was just the thing to perk me up! I almost fell off the sofa at “a squirt of Yorkshire lad.” And I with you completely on caffeine before noon and decaf afterwards, whether tea or coffee. The attempts at one sentence descriptions of the books were a highlight for me, along with Chris singing in the car and the extraordinary snack purchases. And I think I suggested “preconceptions” for your expectations of a book before you start reading. I like the updates as you go (sometimes our impressions of a book really change as we read). My condolences Simon for your loss. If you want to read about a wonderful quirky grandmother I am going to recommend “My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell you She’s Sorry” by Fredrik Backman. This is a great book about the relationship between a grandmother and her granddaughter and it is emotional. I read a book about a refugee girl and her family who fled the war in Vietnam. It is middle grade and it is written in vignettes. The first part of the book is about the Vietnamese war and the second part is about her going to the USA and settling there with her mom and brothers. It is brilliant and I loved it. It is called “Inside Out and Back Again” by Thanhha Lai

I haven't yet read all of the longlist (currently reading Fire Rush, still to read Stone Blind, Bandit Queens and Demon Copperhead). My shortlist of those I have read is: 1. Black Butterflies, 2. My condolences to your family. I was looking forward to Homesick but it really fell flat for me, I also didn't like the last part how the present or more recent day events were just stuck on the end. I just saw that Demon Copperhead won the Pulitzer along with Trust. Do you think that will put her out of the running for the Women's Prize?

I don’t think so no. Other prizes aren’t meant to affect your judging, or authors history of prize winning, as it’s about the book not the noise around it. And if a book is good… it’ll win lots of prizes. Hahaha.
