The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration

Күн бұрын

In recognition of National Women's History Month, this video highlights the wartime experiences of four Americans; each woman exemplifies service in her branch of the Armed Forces. LTC Jay Ellen Barrett earned a commission in the Army Nurse Corps in 1968. In 1971 and 1972, she served in Vietnam as an Army nurse at the 85th Evacuation Hospital in Phu Bai, and the 95th Evacuation Hospital in Da Nang. LTC Barrett retired from the Army Reserves in 1991.
Suzanne Devlin served in the Marine Corps from 1972 to 1975. She was an air traffic controller and a Drill Instructor. The Marine Corps gave her a foundation in leadership that she drew on as the first woman Chief of Police in Fairfax, Virginia; one of only ten in the United States at the time.
After serving as a flight nurse in Korea, LCDR Vila Bobbi Hovis, was among the first Navy nurses to volunteer for Vietnam, where she lived through seven coups d état, and helped turn a hotel into the Naval Hospital in Saigon in 1963.
Brig Gen Wilma Vaught blazed a trail for women in the U.S. Air Force. She was the first woman ever to deploy with a Strategic Air Command Bomb Wing, supporting B-52s and Operation Arc Light from Guam in 1966. She deployed to Saigon in 1968-1969 as a management analyst assigned to the Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV). She was the first woman to reach the rank of brigadier general from the Air Force s comptroller field. Moreover, she was the first woman to go to the Industrial College of the Armed Forces from the Air Force, ever, and was the third woman graduate in its history.
In Recognition of National Women s History Month, the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration salutes all women who served honorably during the Vietnam era.

My mom served as a Army Nurse in World war two....Africa, Italy, Germany. She cried when I went to VN. I am very proud of my mom for stepping up and serving, along with all the women that stepped up and served!!

Heroes. Absolute heroes. And they are not “women” veterans, they’re veterans. Period. America has denigrated and disregarded their service for a very long time, it’s time to educate all future generations to STOP thinking that only men serve and sacrifice in wars.

You are so right. The disrespect and denigration we were subject to is a disgrace. We worked harder and longer and out worked the men.

A tip of my army helmet, and a 20 round salute from my M-16, to all you brave ladies who served when we really needed you. As a disabled veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, I'd like to give a shout out to the women who took care of me for 8 months (1969-70) from Vietnam, to Japan, and home to Fort Devens, Ma. Army Hospital. If not for you nurses I would not be here at 75 years of age typing this. THANK YOU!

A big "OOO-rah" to Suzanne & a thank you as well! My Sainted Mother was the acting command sergeant major of woman marines @MCAS Cherry Point from 1943 til 1945! She was forced to accept an honorable discharge when she married my father, and subsequently gave birth to me @Camp LeJeune, due to a lack of OBGYN facilities @Cherry Point! Anyhow, she was always PROUD of her status as a Marine, and I pass this shoutout, vicariously, to honor her memory, and as a heartfelt tribute to all women, everywhere, who wore this nation's uniform! MANY THANKS🥰👍❗️

The reason was not obgyn. Pregnancy was not allowed. If a woman got pregnant she was shunned and kicked out unceremoniously. Not nice at all. The woman also was not taken care of by any va or service . The baby never recognized. The male marine received no action. Most were date rape or out and out rape. Your mother was married to a marine so treated differently.

No disrespect to you; honorable, distinguished veterans but I have to ask because im a veteran too. When McNamara admitted that the Vietnam Invasion was a sham.., why did you remain silent when Bush invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, knowing that was a sham too?
@SandfordSmythe
@SandfordSmythe Жыл бұрын
McNamara was a little more nuanced that that. I don't know what you mean by "sham". There were good and reasonable intents, but no easy answers.
