👍 Yes it is a visually scary ride, rolling through that massive steel framework and knowing it's a hundred years + in age. I'm a little befuddled why many enthusiasts skip riding this must do historic attraction when they're visiting and vlogging in Coney Island .

I live in and grew up in NYC and am 49 years old. I have been on that thing a million times in my life, and it has been terrifying every single time. Though I agree with you about it being a ten out of ten.

Deno's Wonder Wheel Park was my first place of employment as a teen, loved it. And yes I do agree with you, it is the world's best ferris wheel. Its aesthetics, history, and it'a overall vintage feel just can't be beat. It's old New York (Old Coney) at its absolute finest. One of 2 national landmarks that you can not only visit but actually ride in NYC, the other being the nearby Cyclone roller coaster. The ride is also a must for couples looking to seal the deal with a kiss high up above the midway, yearning for some alone time. And I've had plenty lol. Oh and let's not forget all of those wonderful aromas of popcorn, fried foods, bbq, & etc that greet your nose high up on the wheel's top! Though I did not get to operate the wheel while working at the park (strictly reserved for seasoned & mechanically inclined park employees), I did get to see how it was done. The controls used today are a modern power management push button system in addition to a large handbrake lever. But back then & prior, it was a 1920's era standing voltage control box with a rotating handle lever on top, exactly like those used on vintage streetcars (trolley cars) & subway trains of the time. In addition to the aforementioned break lever. The lightbulbs of the ride are also vintage heat emanating incandescent bulbs along the perimeter, in addition to now vintage neon tubes along the spokes. Fun fact, on one point in time and for many decades, the swinging cars too ha incandescent lightbulbs on their corners, making the ride even more beautiful looking at night as the cars swung along. @@CanobieCoaster Man its my absolute pleasure, thank YOU for the wonderful memories. Heads up, at the beginning of the classic gang movie "The Warriors" you can actually see the wheel running with the lightbulbs attached to the swinging cars. Not to mention the neon tubes flashing on & off towards the center of the ride. The subsequent and current owners decided to do away with the lightbulbs on the swinging cars out of fear of safety for the guests, as they occasionally caused sparks to shoot from the tracks as the cars swung along. Very similar to the sparks seen shooting from subway trains as they run along making contact with the third (powered) rail.

Such a great wheel! I love when you reach the side facing Staten Island where it looks like you're going to fly off the rails and into Steeplechase. From construction pictures, it looks like one of these are being built at Fuli Ocean Happy World. There definitely needs to be more of these Ferris Wheel types in the world!

I've never even been to New York state, let alone New York City, and I probably never will; however, if I were to go on the Wonder Wheel at ANY point, I'd always pick the white, stationary gondolas. I'm not really into intense swinging. Milder swinging is okay, but not so strongly. Thank you for adding another reason for this preference, though.

I must admit, I haven't done the Wonder Wheel in a long time, probably not since the turn of the millennium (back when I went to college in NYC and lived in Brooklyn). I've made a handful of trips to CI since then, but mostly for the Cyclone and other coasters and flatrides. I don't believe I've ever ridden the stationary side (for the cost, it's hard to justify NOT taking the 'fun' version). Perhaps in 2022 I'll try it again, this time with the family.

What are your thoughts on Project Exodus? It looks like a strange hyper coaster and possibly the best in the UK, although it does also look a bit short, and could maybe have a couple of extra airtime hills. It is subject to change however.

There used to be a ride right next to the Wonder Wheel called the Hell Hole. I heard quite a few people threw up on that ride lol.

@@CanobieCoaster Originally there was a ride called the Hell Hole at Coney Island but , it was demolished in 1995. I believe after a women’s leg was mangled on the ride including 13 other injured people. After that they created another ride called the Ghost Hole at the exact same spot the Hell Hole was at.

yes, it was a vintage "Rotor Ride", a cylinder barrel type vessel with a dropping floor. And it was definitely called the "Hell Hole" at Coney.
