I think one of the things I love about Shaun of the Dead is that it's not REALLY a parody. Like it has winking references to other zombie movies but it doesn't require any knowledge of zombies or horror or anything to work on its own because it's got solid characters and gags and the whole situation is taken seriously. In the commentary on one of the deleted scenes they talked about how they didn't want to make the zombies "silly" (the scene in question was a visual gag with the zombies and that was why they cut it) and I think that decision really works, because if the zombies had just been for gags it would have undercut the story and ruined the tone.
@patrickholt2270
@patrickholt2270 5 жыл бұрын
That's right. They didn't want to parody the genre because they loved the classic zombie movies, and Resident Evil 2, and wanted to make a zombie movie for that reason. Which just had to be funny and meaningful, because that's what Ed and Simon do, especially together.
@michaelvessel4604
@michaelvessel4604 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it really is more of a zombie movie that happens to be really funny other than a spoof on the genre, which I love. You can just tell how much love and appreciation Ed and Simon had for classic zombie movies in this.

Shaun mums name is not Mary, but Barbara. It's an hommage to the Barbara character in Night Of The Living Dead. Hence the "We're coming to get you Barbara". Mary was the female zombie in their garden. All snarkishness aside: love the channel, love the trilogy youtube movies.

Oh man this movie holds a weird place in my heart. As my name is Sean, my parents joked about it the year it came out. Then, around the time i turned 11 or 12, they let me watch it. I remember being terrified and crying at then end as people are getting their innards ripped out. It became this weird experience of anticipation, then joy, then just shock. An undeniable experience.

A thing I quite like about this film, beside all the...everything, obviously, is that this is one of the only films where they show WHY the main character is so self sacrificing for his friends. Now don't get me wrong, obviously I don't NEED an explanation for that. But Shaun's life is in such a dead end, it makes sense for him to be willing to kill himself protecting people who's lives "have worth". Like was directly said to you: the good things are worth fighting for.

If I remember correctly, the dogs can't look up bit started partially in Spaced where they shout at the dog, Colin, on the yard from upstairs and Colin turned around confused toward the noise but it never occurred to him that the voice could be coming from somewhere so high up. So it looked like he couldn't look up at them who shouted. It was an in-joke since then and later used as a funny factoid that someone like the childlike Ed would believe. Now that I think about it, I've also been told that when dogs cock their head slightly it helps them pinpoint a soundsource vertically. So if they continued shouting "Colin!" when the dog cocked his head the myth might have never started. That's the thing about good writing. It has many layers, even a stupid throwaway repeated gag like "dogs can't look up" :P

About dogs not looking up: while filming a scene for Pegg/Wright's sitcom Spaced where a dog was supposed to be reacting to Jessica Hynes' character in an upstairs window, the dog's handler was giving orders to the dog from the ground floor. The finished shot made it look (unintentionally) like the dog wasn't looking up at the character even though it was reacting to them. Nick Frost (who played Mike in Spaced) made a jokey claim on the commentary that this is because dogs can't look up.

There is a moment of foreshadowing so subtle in the scene when we are introduced to Philip at the electronic shop. Right after he says "Well we look forward to seeing you on Sunday" he smiles because he's actually looking forward to it. That smile in the context of the conversation says so much about the history between the two characters, it's so well acted by Bill Nighy.

And so the trilogy comes to a close :P I love this film, and it's cool to see you do a breakdown of it. While my personal favourite of the trilogy is still Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead was the first movie I ever really got, kind of obsessed with. When I was younger, I think one of my brothers managed to get it on DVD and I just spent ages going through all the bonus features and seeing all the extra stuff and behind the scenes and getting so oddly interested in learning about how it was made and eventually came to be. It was the movie that got me interested in movies, as something more than just a thing to watch. Also, god, I'd love to see an Edgar Wright spy thriller called Black Forest, that sounds fantastic!

I absolutely adored this. Thanks for making it, Mikey! I think we had a similar experience with avoiding this movie when it first came out. From the title and the posters, it just looked like it was going to be one of those awful spoof movies, like 'Superhero Movie' or something like that. I endured a lot of pestering before I finally watched it, wherein it then instantly became one of my favourite movies of all time. Off the back of watching this, I binged both seasons of Spaced multiple times, and even went as far as to bleach my hair blonde and trim my ginger beard to match the style of Tim's in the show! Being a fellow Ginger, 'Shaun' has very often been my go to character for Halloween parties... Fancy dress aside, I don't think it's an over-statement to say that this movie was one of the biggest influences in my life, and you sir, have done it justice with another great video!

Hey Mikey, you will definitely appreciate this. One of the hidden depths of this film I don’t think anyone else has noticed. There is that running gag in the film that dogs can’t look up. Well if you look at Philip he treats Shaun like he is a dog. Watch and see their interactions. Before Philip dies he has that touching moment where he tells Shaun he loves him and gives him other words of support. But still he is seeing him like a dog. He says to Shaun he wanted to be someone he could look up to. But deep down he didn’t believe Shaun could look up being that he saw him as a dog and that dogs can’t look up. So ultimately while he might have wanted to be that figure for Shaun he didn’t believe Shaun could fulfill his role in that dynamic. The last thing Philip says to Shaun is “good boy”. Now that is some complex story telling.

I was 18 when this film came out. I was living on the Oregon coast and my high school class went on a day-trip to Ashland for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. We arrived with 3 hours to wait for the performance to start. How did I kill the time, you ask? By going to see this film in the local theatre. I watched Shaun of the Dead before going to see a production of Oedipus Complex, a grisly comedy followed immediately by a grisly tragedy. I will never forget that day.

“Dogs can’t look up” is a confusion of the “chickens/turkeys drown if they look up during a rainstorm” (something about they can’t drink water when their head is pointing up), so the joke is - big al is stupid, so stupid in fact that he got an error filled telling of an untrue tidbit and believed it (stupid implying easily duped). The fact that there is an argument about “dogs can’t look up” is this film proving that what big al stated - is easy to believe as fact, if your willing to believe anything you hear or read.

Another cool thing about Shaun of the dead that you kinda missed is how it shows what humanity in Edgar Wright's universe does after a Zombie apocalypse. Zombies are guests on talk shows, participants in game shows, fighting game players, and overall just thrown into roles where Romero's "consumer zombies" would be. The apocalypse was like this weird realization that store clerks, wage slaves, layabouts, and indecisive people are actual zombies, and the world then deals with that by accepting them in those roles. I'm not sure if that's a positive message, or even an intended one, but I like to think it's something of a message of acceptance.

This film is really relatable for me right now. 25 years old, work full time at a dead end job, still live at home, Mrs has left me for some older guy with money, all my friends and family are happily in relationships. Getting married and having kids etc. Could do with a zombie apocalypse right now...

I love that the Dawn of the Dead remake is one of the most divisive horror films in at least 20 years, if not of all time. I personally love it and feel exactly the same way about that overhead shot.

These movies inspired you to create this series, and watching you talk about these movies, which were my favorites as a child, inspires me to keep writing my own stuff that is already inspired by these things but now to deeper levels. It’s real interesting. Thanks b

Hey, I've been watching a lot of your videos while I work, and I just want to say that I really like your voice/cadence. I get overstimulated easily so i usually put stuff on that can kind of calm me down, which means I'm usually limited to whispery asmr videos. Yours aren't that, obviously, but even when you are clearly excited about a thing, it's a warm fuzzy thing instead of an overstimulating spazzy thing. So thanks for that.

I had a similar introduction to Shaun of the Dead and it is also one of my favourite movies, period. I have been hoping you would do this since you did the other Cornetto trilogy movies and it makes me so happy this exists now. Thank you as always for this awesome video.

Hey Mikey, just so you know, 'dogs can't look up' was actually from the director's commentary track of Spaced. The show Edgar directed starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost that originated the idea of them doing a zombie movie in the first place. Assume you probably knew this, but honestly more people need to watch Spaced. "This is a reference to a an episode of Spaced's second series. There's a scene with a shot looking down at Colin (a dog) from an upstairs window, which according to Edgar and Simon in the dvd commentary took ages to film, and had Nick claiming that "dogs can't look up" (ie the dog wouldn't be able to tilt it's head back to look upwards towards the camera). It's obviously not true but Nick was adamant."

Fun Fact - Dianne actually lived in the end. On the DVD there's a bonus feature that explains that she fought off zombies using David's leg and hid in a tree until the zombies were gone

According to the bonus features on the DVD, Diane actually did live. After she came to her senses from her blind charge out into the zombie horde, using David's leg as a club, she ended up climbing up a tree where the zombies couldn't get her.
