I think WonderBat works because Diana is a demigod, fascinated by a mortal man, who's incredible willpower and smarts make appear him as one as well. In a world of super powers, monsters, aliens and magic, Batman keeps pace with it all and Diana admires and respects that. And even when he mentions that powerful enemies could get to her through him, she brush's it aside by easily breaking a gargoyle. She likes him despite his lack of superpowers, not becaue of her own. Compare that to a ship like Superman X Wonder Woman, where it seems like they fall in love just because they have similar super powers. I also like WonderBat because its the opposite of the typical trope of the strong man protecting the woman, like you might typically see in other famous relationships; for example, Superman and Lois Lane. Here, Wonder Woman is the stronger one with magic powers and super-human martial abilities. And yet, she doesn't look down on Batman, but sees him as special. Someone worth caring for, protecting and getting to know. I suppose to her, all the other magical, super-powered, characters are rather boring compared to Batman. And we may not ever know how Batman truly feels about Wonder Woman, but I think we can infer that he definitely appreciates any attention he gets from her. Which I think is a cool little peek under the mask at Batman's more human soft side, different from the typical, stoic badass we usually know.
@dschehutinefer5627 Жыл бұрын
Earlier today I stumbled across comments reminding me of this ship and ended up looking into Wonder Woman stories because while I do think it intriguing that Diana would be just... so much healthier on Bruce than literally all of his canonical love interests, I kept wondering what Diana would get out of this given that she usually ends up buried in the discussion while everyone focuses on Batman. I noted quite quickly that Bruce's personality has quite a lot of overlap with Steve Trevor (which is probably what attracts her in the first place) and if transplanted into a Wonder Woman story he'd pretty much immediately snap into Steve's position as the intel dude helping her as mission control or sneakily infiltrating enemy camps and fighting besides her when things go haywire. However, I still ended up unsure what character development she could get out of the relationship beyond having a love interest that intrigues her in terms of traits she admires. I guess the DCEU also added Bruce and Diana bonding over art and history, which is neat, but still ends up aiding Batman much more at being more comfortable being himself as Bruce Wayne, than it helps Diana connect with her roots. Ultimately, it feels very much like Diana doesn't necessarily needs him mostly because she is just that well-adjusted as a person already, while Bruce just... really desperately needs someone with whom he can be himself (as in, being Batman even without the cowl on) and not shy away from opening up to, but for the love of god isn't a flaky or abusive villain or a freaking trainee under his tutelage.
@Surreal_Traveler9 ай бұрын
@@dschehutinefer5627 Excellent take! (the following is probably the most I have ever spoken of on a fictional relationship, but here we go~): As for what Bruce could bring to the table, well, I would suggest that Diana is often focused perhaps too much on the large-scale of justice, while Bruce is focused too much on the small-scale (vis-a-vis saving individual lives, in-person, versus implementing societal and socio-economic change on a large scale in Gotham, and beyond, with Wayne Enterprises, etc.). I would posit that he would/could keep her grounded on the individual emotional stakes of events. Though, really, this is an "off-the-cuff" take, and I really do not think it holds much water as it pertains to DCAU "WonderBat", or Prime Continuity as a whole. In all honesty, I myself do not think that it would actually BE a demerit if she were to not actually especially "get anything" out of the relationship, on her end, necessarily. Perhaps one could argue that an actual exploration of "WonderBat" would be unfair to Diana as between her having arguably the highest Emotional Intelligence of the JL compared to, well, Batman; but like you allude to in your second paragraph, it wouldn't be Bruce bringing Diana down, but Diana lifting Bruce up. I do not think that would inherently be unfair to Diana, especially since she still gets, well, Bruce himself, out of the relationship. Their chemistry and emotional-companionship (both in the DCAU and in Prime Continuity) certainly suggest so. DCAU Diana even married the Alt-U 'Justice Lord' Bruce of all versions, and was happily-married for DECADES until his untimely murder, as per the cannon Xfinity comics (both characters and fans got done dirty; we deserve a better sequel to the DCAU and "WonderBat", both, imho. Maybe she'll see him in Elysium after his mortal death, post-Batman Beyond?). Ostensibly, the relationship has been shown to be very successful for both Bruce and Diana. Among the best relationships are bearing one, Communication, two, Mutual Respect, and three; when the other partner brings out the best qualities in oneself-when both are made better and uplifted by the other. WonderBat is certainly that.

He must have SOMEWHAT liked her Couple reasons to believe it too 1. When Wonder Woman stopped a missile from hitting a city, it crashed and Batman was the first to rush in to try and find her amongst the rubble 2. After he sang to have her transformed back into her human form, he didn’t think she’d heard him sing, until she started humming the song he sang as she walked away, which made him smile, and not some excited smile, or even a “How about that” smile, but a smug, kinda “Ayyyy” type of smile 3. When he listed the reasons he and Diana shouldn’t date, none of the reasons so much as implied that he didn’t have feelings, he merely said that dating within the team can cause issues, they’re extremely different people, and he didn’t want to risk his enemies going after her

Kevin Conroy's passing hit me pretty hard. It was just so sudden and unexpected. Batman: The Animated Series was my first exposure to the character and I've just been so used to hearing Kevin Conroy reprise the role on and off throughout the years. I'm glad that you brought up that gentleness and warmth in his performance. I think that's a huge reason why it's so effective. He captured the gruff Dark Knight voice who strikes fear into criminals, but there was also a layer of kindness and empathy underneath. It's a way to show that even with how cold, distant and serious Batman appears, he still cares about other people. It's why he's able to form relationships with other Justice League members, why his relationship with Superman changes over the years and why the romance between him and Diana starts to form. The flashback scene in Epilogue shows what Batman is, or at least should be as far as I'm concerned. Batman being able to empathize with a girl over their lost childhoods and holding her hand as she dies captures that gentle kindness underneath his own trauma so well. Kevin Conroy sounded like such a sweet person. I've watched a few of his interviews where he talks about the character and the fans and you can feel such warmth coming from his voice. Normally Bruce Wayne is the mask, and Batman is his real persona, but with Diana he's able to use the Bruce identity to show his genuine attraction in ways he wouldn't be comfortable doing as Batman.

Even to this day when I read a comic with batman in it, Kevin's voice is the one that I picture. I will always know Kevin as The Batman, and someone who seemed like a genuinely great person

Kevin was an amazing voice actor I can never see batman without hearing him. A favorite episode of mine of the batman the animated series was the grey ghost where Bruce teams up with the actor of his favorite show as a kid he also was voiced by adam west another batman so hearing both adam and Kevin in the show was amazing.

Conroy's passing hit me like a ton of bricks. I LOVED Batman the animated series, Justice League and Batman Beyond growing up. He IS Batman and Bruce Wayne to me with how distinct he made the two sound and he truly understood and respected the character in every version he portrayed since then too. Even in less serious contexts he always played the character appropriately to still fit the image of Batman. Finding out he was gay also gave me some comfort as an at the time closeted bisexual it was nice to think of the actor who plays one of my favourite characters from childhood also being someone who had struggled with identity and hiding parts of himself regarding who he was (probably a big factor as to why he was so good at portraying the duality of Batman). Going to miss you Mr Conroy. You are vengeance. You are the night. You are BATMAN!

I love this ship because it truly feels like both characters are pushed from their comfort zones towards something positive by the other .And they are comforted by the other . Also , I want good things for both of them , they are great characters .

Batman and Wonder Woman was always my favorite ship for those 2 characters. They just had such great chemistry throughout the show that no live action interpretation of Batman has captured with their respective love interests. Cat Woman, Talia, etc. None of them quite matched the DCAU Batman and Wonder Woman’s dynamic for me. The writing was just top notch and made those 2 characters romance the definitive one for me, even surpassing Batman and Cat Woman. I love this show, I love the Batman animated series, and I love Kevin Conroy. R.I.P.

there was this attempt in the comics to get them together, and i can't remember if it started in the comics, or in the JLU show. one thing i won't forget is that there was this scene with them sparring - diana using all of her powers and bruce just, you know, punching and throwing toys. the narrator said that the two had different approaches to fighting - batman was a connoisseur, he knew a wide variety of styles and moves, while diana was a specialist - she knew one style really really well. and thats why they could spar and play off each other. they were both warriors, they were both fighters - and they had that connection more than anyone else on the JLA. i always loved that. then after like a year or two of back and forth they basically cut it off in one issue in the dumbest way ever and i was pissed for like a week

I’m convinced that after Bruce saw the future, seeing how after his dedication to the crusade crime doesn’t change and just ends with his loneliness so he changes a bit. Takes a while but he eventually opens up to only a few people

One thing I loved so much about Conroy was how none of his Batmen sounded the same, BTAS was different from JLU, Arkham Asylum was different from City and Knight, which was different from Injustice, and so on and so forth. My favorite voice he ever did for Batman was in Arkham Knight, as a matter of fact, that's just simply my favorite version of Batman. Everything from the design to how he is as a character, minus the disrespect towards the Batfam lol. But just the fact that my friend and I can sit down and have a discussion about what version of Conroy's voice was our favorite for The Bat speaks volumes to how talented he was. Enjoy your peace, Conroy, you earned it. You gave millions of kids around the planet, me included, a hero to look up to, so thank you.

Great video. I think one of the the other reasons Wonderbat works so well is that while most men without super powers would be intimidated by Diana's physical power and general presence, Bruce isn't even phased. He respects her as she is. Ans that's really attractive on screen.

Just rewatched JL and JLU this past week and I found out the day after I finished JLU again. Conroy was the Batman that I grew up with watching him on JL, JLU, Batman Beyond or even reruns of BTAS. He was always Batman to me. Whenever his Batman would interact with the bat family or even Diana and Clark or the rest of the league you felt this warmth this sense that beneath all the trauma, pain and suffering he still manages to care for everyone one of them. Rest easy Mr. Conroy we will all miss you

"Man, for somebody with like, 50 different kinds of vision, you are so BLIND." Little GL is the best. The thing Batman and WW had going for that while was really great (especially in the episode where they were all kids again), and I wish we'd gotten more of it. Batman deserved something good, because Conroy made him worthy. He fought the fights out of survivor's guilt...because he believed he'd failed his parents and didn't deserve love. But we all fell in love with him anyway. Batman deserved better, and so did Kevin.

This was always one of my favorite ships. Bruce is very outwardly stoic and cold while Diana is outwardly caring and kind which always seems to soften up Batman and bring his true colors out. Bruce is also constantly denying relationships because his enemies will hurt his partners but that problem obviously doesn’t exist with Diana the seemingly immortal warrior goddess. Overall they just balance each other out really well

So many of us were blessed to be able to have our days filled with Kevin Conroy playing Batman and entertaining us even when things were not the best. He genuinely made Batman more than some cold calculating billionaire vigilante. And it's going to be really hard to have anybody else voice Batman at the level that he voiced it. Is Batman entertained generations. There will never be another legend like him.

R.I.P. Kevin Conroy forever the definitive voice of Batman. It too bad we won't be able to see him interact with Susan Eisenbergs's Wonder Women again. In the Batman and Superman Apocalypse animated film Batman and Wonder Women clearly still have chemistry mainly due to the voice actors, and I'm still to egar to see a version where these characters actually get together. Especially since some of their recent iterations have been having them be contentious with each other.
