Xiumin was about to enlist into the military. He was the first to go and I believe it’s when the lyrics said “you are not alone” that Baekhyun got emotional. He was likely thinking about his hyung leaving and being alone in the military but D.O ended up going in as well. It is a song with deep meaning. You should look up the lyrics to this one and “That’s Okay”. You reacted to the MV but the English captions didn’t work. Thank you for the reaction!

When I first heard Paper Cuts without any context or lyrics, I felt that inexplicable sadness like you did. When I learned its context as Xiumin's last stage before enlistment and EXO members entering their military era, I teared up when Baekhyun broke. It's amazing. And thank you for the reaction, Pierre. I really appreciate how you explain the mechanics. I never noticed the guitar entering the song before. Your beginning with EXO was a few months after mine. I remember you being skeptical. But (and I hope this doesn't sound arrogant), because of how much you appreciate musicianship, I had faith that if you gave their work a chance you'd appreciate their talents apart and together. To me, it's almost a miracle the quality, range and textures that SM happened to put in this one group and how well they blend together. That's what got me into K-pop and realize it can be sophisticated music for grown folks. (Not just because of Cream Soda. 🤪). If you can, I'm sure a lot of us would like to know what you think of the song after reading the lyrics. Also, when you mentioned liking Chen's full voice, it reminded me of the live stage called Chen - "Lights Out" in Japan. He does a solo of a group song. CBX is a subunit of EXO and the three of them do wonderfully well together; They have a special mix of vocal, visual, dance and a little rap, mostly retro style. Magical Circus is the name of their concert in Japanese, which I recommend because listening to them live is even more spectacular than the studio version. In particular, during this performance, they sang PaperCuts, a song related to Xiumin, who was going to military service and it would be the last time they sang together, for the next year and a half. Xiumin was the first to enlist and he was very nervous wondering if EXOL would forget about him during that time. Seeing that Xiumin was feeling distressed, Baekhyun became very worried about his friend and felt touched; That's why he almost ended up crying during the performance of the song. I think the phrase that summarizes the intention of the song is "The moments where we can't meet, teach the true meaning of love" and the one that Baekhyun sings almost crying is "Don't wanna be out of time, even when we are apart, the paper cuts in my hand, you're not alone" I would like to complement this story about the song by saying that Xiumin did a farewell fanmeeting with EXOL and the EXO members showed up as a surprise to say goodbye to him. He is the oldest of all although he has a baby face and is very cute. During the fanmeeting where the members gave him words of support and even Lay participated with a call, Xiumin, who is not the crying type, couldn't hold back his tears and cried profusely. EXOL we were crying our eyes out for a whole week and we do it again every time we hear it.😭😭

Yeah, Baekhyun was trying not to cru...he's thinking of Xiumin leaving and it got to him. Xiumin said he knew Baekhyun was getting choked up, and he said he did not want to look at Baekhyun because he would start to cry too. Very touching. As Chen is always the 'rock' within Exo, with Xiumin being the first to leave, and believe me, for all Exols, it was a very big deal, me too....one of my guys will be gone and, we all were not okay. But I cried when I first saw this video....too much for me. 💙🌺

Yup, EXO-CBX is the name of their subunit. They formed as a vocal trio in 2016 and released both Korean and Japanese mini albums up until Xiumin's enlistment into the military in 2019. They are planning another release as a sub-unit this year!! (SM has a long tradition of forming vocal trio units from their larger groups and they always use the first letter or syllable of the members name. Super Junior has KRY, Girls Generation has TaeTiSo, EXO has CBX and NCT has DoJaeJung.) EXO also has another sub-unit of their rappers Chanyeol and Sehun who release albums as EXO-SC. And it's well worth the time to look up the lyrics to this song, it's really lovely even if something is lost in translation...

Its lyrics and melody is heart piercing.specially the way they sing and their voices haunt me. One of the reasons i got into exo bcz it was the first kpop group that made me cry with this song without knowing the lyrics. I wish you had subtitles on here. Baekhyun could not sing bcz he almost cried, he really controlled himself but counldnt sing. You saw it in his Guide too. He explained it as xiumin was going to enlist and The lyrics are "You are not alone" maybe something like that which he couldnot sing as he turned back to xiumin and he got emotional. Then he turned his back again.

I remember watching this when I first getting to know EXO and thinking Xiumin was one of their main vocalist (well, he's qualified enough to be one) lol anyway, this was one of their last performance on CBX concert "Magical Circus" that happened shortly before Xiumin went to military. It was explained later that Baekhyun got emotional during the lyrics "..even when we're apart.. you are not alone.." BUT then Xiu teased him (for crying) after he got back from military 😂

Oh... One of my favorite songs "EXO" (although when it comes to CBX, I prefer Diamond Crystal). This concert was hard for Baek. Not only Xiumin's goodbye, but from what I remember it was then sick. I remember that back then there was some bigger confusion about the fact that he shouldn't perform at all. But since this was one of Xiu's last concerts, he himself wanted it. Then apparently he fainted (but I'm not sure if it was then... So if I'm wrong, I'm sorry) But yes... It's beautiful. Words too. And I'm still amazed by Xiu. Because Chen and Baek are... Heaven. And Xiu... Angel. I can't wait to see what happens next. When everyone left SM and will be on their own in Baek's label. I hope they rock🔥🔥🔥

This really brought back the memories of xiumin enlisting .. I was in Japan and they had like live show throughout the country at the cinema .. couldn’t go to the Saitama venue but got the chance to be in the cinema hall watching it live with fellow exo ls .. the whole hall just bawling our eyes out.. when Baekhyun couldn’t sing that part … my heart hurt so bad since I can understand japanese… it was so sad knowing one of the members will go even just for a 1 year and a half .. little did we know , we were just getting laughed at later on 😂😂😂 i still remember what Kyungsoo said hahaha gosh i hate(read: love) him 😂

Baekhyun stopped singing not because he couldn't continue or had problems with his falset or voice. in an interview Baekhyun said he sang the last part then turned around to look at Xiumin at that time he felt very emotional, because it was their last concert before Xiumin left for military service. For your information, Xiumin was the first member of Exo to join the military so that moment was very emotional because the other members would lose Xiumin for quite a long time because he was inserted as a good citizen in the South Korean military. This performance was so emotional 😭 the way Baekhyun couldn't sing towards the end because of this being Xiumin's last performance with them. Tbh everyone have different taste in music but I believe in a certain aspect shows raw talent than its meant to touch you. For me personally I never liked rapping to the point that I never deemed it worthy when it came mes to be recognized as a singing field but Exo's Monster made me view rapping in a respectful mindset. It made me realize that even rapping isn't of my taste but I should appreciate it for its part in a certain song and how when it is done right then I can actually let myself to enjoy it. From then onwards I found myself vibing to many Exo and even other kpop group's rappings if they are done rightly by the rythm of the song. In the same way I know high notes might not be everyone's taste but I think they can learn to appreciate it if it goes well with the flow of the song and isn't just there for the sake of showoff for the vocalists. Exo's discography in general is something I find every factors well balanced with each other whether its riffs/runs, falsettos, high notes, vibrato and others.
