This song was made by Lay when EXO still had 2 group units EXO-K and EXO-M. The Korean version's lyrics was written by Chen and the rap parts by Chanyeol. The Chinese version of the lyrics was written by Lay. Each has a different meaning because the Korean version of the song is for fans who continue to support EXO and the Chinese version of the song contains a message for the members who left the group. EXO's Promise was composed by Lay, Chen and Chanyeol also helped with the translation and wrote the rap. EXO promised us that they will stay together forever but sadly, the members still left. 2014 is the saddest year for all of us. As a gift for their devoted fans-EXOL who stayed with EXO, they've given us this song as a promise of commitment and endless happiness. The song was criticized by their agency yet the perseverance of Lay made it possible and here we are, all emotional with this song. Later after that year, EXO acknowledged more the deepest love of Ls for them that even up to this day believes in us that we will always have their back; that we will protect each other and love as long as we live. Lay wrote the song, there’s an interview that he said that he convinced SM to released the song. Then Chen translate it to korean and Chanyeol for the rap part. This is like promise to the fans that they will stay together after the other members left the group. There’s a video when Tao, the last member who left, was crying while his hand were up doing the L sign during the concert while the other members were singing the song. Suho saw it and cried too. 😭

"PROMISE is a song whose lyrics were written by Lay, Chanyeol and Chen... this is our promise. they went through dark times losing 3 members from China and because they didn't want to see EXOL drown in sadness they made this song for EXOL. *correct if wrong At that time they were still very young...you could see Kai crying, Baekhyun and Xiumin hiding their sadness as hard as they could. Chanyeol who expressed his emotions in his rapp.. All the members were sad and sang from the heart. but there was Suho's figure there, for some reason I felt sorry for him and really loved him as a leader, he fought hard all this time. Hi. Thank you for reacting. EXO2014(Promise) is indeed a special and a tear jerker song for every EXOLs. 2014 is the toughest year for EXO and EXO Ls with the members' departure and all. EXO2014(Promise) was composed by Lay, lyrics written by Chen and rap written by Chanyeol. The Chinese version also has the members' participation in the production. This song is really meaningful because it's EXO's promise to EXO Ls which was clearly expressed through it's lyrics. You might also see some performances where some members are emotional while singing the song. 😭 Until now, I remember every word, even the rap part and it makes me emotional every single time.

Promise is a really important song for the fandom... They released it at a time when they and EXO-L were living with a lot of pain. Some members had left the group, and we all felt a lot of uncertainty about the future. You know why it is special. Bcz it was written and sung by broken hearts. There is a video focusing on members. They were all crying. It was originally written by lay when Chinese members left and exo was facing hatred. Lay wrote it in chinese and composed it. His song was rejected(you have seen that in lay's guide) Lay told that he played it in his car, his manager heard the song and he loved it, he asked him to add it in their next album. Then lay asked from the members. They all liked it. So they had to do efforts. Chen translated it in korean and chanyeol added his rap part. I hope SM allows members to write such songs more often.
