We have a small desert region in the south of New Zealand, that is very similar looking to your South West desert regions, it's covered with Thyme and Rosehip bushes , Rabbits and Quail , and Hawks circling above. It gets very hot in the summer , and very dry , and , especially if it rains , there is the most beautiful perfume in the air off the Rosehip, and Thyme.

Yeah, the creosote bushes do smell cool, but so does the sage brush. And yes, rebar and horse shoes aren't the best quality metals, they just work for their purpose. Wow! I have lived about an hour's drive south of there for over 50 years. I am always in a hurry passing thru that area on my way to the Reno/Tahoe area. I need to take more time to stop here and also the Alabama Hills further north near Lone Pine. I have been fortunate enough to share my yard with native Joshua Trees and Juniper trees in my yard for decades. It was great that you got to meet J.P. I hope he gets commissioned to do some artwork for China Lake NWS.

I understand exactly what you mean about deserts, I've spent 6 years in the Eastern Arabian desert, plus the Western Hejaz desert and part of Jordan. I've also been through Arizona and parts of Nevada and Texas deserts, such peaceful places! Deserts are also a magnet to those who can't resist travelling in dangerous places. Love your series.

Tea made from the Creasote Bush can be drank as a general tonic. I take a large handfull and brew a full pot of tea and then dilute it to Two gallons and drink it like iced tea. It tastes just like it smells. Also the crushed leaves can be used as a antiseptic on scrapes and small cuts.
