Wood Bowl Turning Without A Chuck Woodturning Video
Is it possible to turn a wooden bowl without a chuck? The answer is yes! For various reasons, some people don't want to turn a wood bowl using a chuck.
In this video, I will share with you how to turn a wood bowl without a chuck. And the added bonus is I'll be using a very small amount of equipment in the process. So, if you're curious about turning bowls but haven't yet committed to the process by purchasing a four jaw chuck, try this technique to get your feet wet.
If you decide you like turning wood bowls, then you'll probably want to get a chuck to make the process a bit easier and more efficient. But in the meantime, watch and learn how to turn a bowl without a chuck.

This a wonderful, well explained method using the faceplate which comes with most lathes when new. No need to make that "exact tenon" for jaw check use. The face plate is very secure so no opportunity for the bowl to become a flying object, if proper screws are used.

When I use a spur drive, I drill a hole a little larger than the diameter of the spur about 3/4” -1” into the wood. This acts as an extra safety measure when turning large pieces of wood. If the Spurs were to lose their grip in the wood, the hole would at least keep the blank on the lathe instead of flying off and potentially cause injury. Doing this is not going to hurt the blank since it will eventually be flipped around for the face plate mounting and the hole will be removed during the bowl hollowing process.

Hi Kent .. Your like the Bob Ross of bowl turning .. Kind of a hypnotic speaking pattern.. Love your videos... Question is there any reason you didn't use the faceplate on the bowl side first seems like it would have been more secure... Excuse my ignorance I am a noob.

Purely as an observer (subscribed), I’d say the end that you’re going to screw the faceplate onto could be hollowed out (not deep) just enough so that the faceplate is snug in there.. then, when you flip the bowl it should be almost true…. I don’t turn, but I’m fascinated with the techniques, and Kent’s knowledge and skills are incredible!

Do you strop your flutes? You didn't show it so I wondered. Stropping off makes the tool so much more reliable and the edge far more resistant cutting down on shaping a lot. Really fantastic instruction.

Thanks, no I don't strop. I've had good success without stropping, but I may check into it. Usually, the edge is wears down so quickly, it's not worth doing much more to the edge beyond sharpening. Thanks. Happy Turning!

the only thing I see is that you didn't have to use that much waste material just glue a sacrificial piece of wood to paper then to the bottom of the bowl when your done turning you split the sacrificial piece off your bowl and your faceplate screws are only in the sacrificial piece. I know this method Works cuz hundreds of bowls were made at my high school back in the 70

Something that would be really cool that I haven't seen before, is a live lathe RPM indicator as part of the video, like in the lower right or something. It would require a data logging tachometer where the logged RPM data could be time synced and added to the video in post-production, basically like a subtitle data file. Seems like it would be especially helpful for beginners to see real-time how experienced turners vary their lathe speed for the various cuts throughout the turning process. Something cool for a techie to figure out :)

When I began turning and had an old, used Rockwell 11" lathe I had only faceplates, no chucks. I even made a few faceplates with inserts from Grizzly like this one: Steelex D1102 - Insert - 1-1/4" x 8 TPI, RH Thread. I also used glue blocks and paper glue joints extensively. One reason I used glue blocks was to work with thin pieces of wood. Still a good technique. Nowadays I use chucks, mostly because of speed and convenience.

The same way but with a glue block I'm pushing 70 and have been doing that since my days in high school I finally broke down and bought a 4 jaw chuck and literally turned a cherry burl bowl today with the thing 01/25/23 !!!😁 Why I didn't get one before now I'll never know it cut the turning time in half! Stubborn I guess my lathe is 83 Years old this year handed down to me from my grandfather I rebuilt it about 20 Years ago I'm a retired cabinet maker and contractor !!! LoL 👍

Thanks for this very helpful video. I like the idea of keeping the tail stock in place for first steps in turning the inside, but cannot figure out how to get my tool in the right position to take a cut without running into the tail stock with the handle. Are you using a very short handle or is the some other way to maneuver this?

For years I didn't have a 4-jaw chuck. I used a screw chuck with a single coarse thread OR if the wood was too punky, mounted the blank base with Super Glue (sandwiching brown paper in between) to a base plate. No screws or holes to contend with. It was mounted between centers to begin as you have, but the screw chuck is inserted into the mouth/top end of the bowl instead of the foot to start shaping the exterior. I left a tennon so it could be flipped to hollow. To tun off the tennon, like you, would fashion a piece of scrap to mimmick the inside to act as a jam chuck.

I've been turning since 1991. Primarily, turning small boxes, goblets and earrings. I'm sure I must have turned over a hundred bowls over those years and have never used a commercial wood holding chuck. I do use shop made Jam and Vacuum chucks though. Ya don't miss what ya never used! Like you, a Face Plate and Bowl Gouge does the job. Thank you for showing others how it's done, - step by step. Especially those "always" tense moments when parting off a perfect bowl. Good job Kent! Wakodahatchee Chris

I have not turned anything since I was a teenager. I am wondering why you didn’t core that piece out to get a few more bowls out of that big piece of wood being that the spalting was so prevalent throughout.
