Some small wood I use to make wooden spoons and utensils. That way, a bowl and salad set of utensils can go with it. There are plenty of people on KZbin to show how to do this, but I do not use an ax or carving tool to outline the rough spoon. I simply use a small bandsaw to outline the shape, then use a disc grinder adaptation fitting on my lathe to get closer to the shape, then use a French rasp to finish up and a few carving tools to do the bowl portion. I finish up with 220 grit sand paper and 400 grit, then add tung oil to finish. The spoon and bowl set for salads or pasta makes a complete set to match. Look into it. I think you will increase sales value per bowl.

Just got started making bowls.Just threw some old walnut on it and went to town with some spindle gouges.Shaping went fine but the ripped out grain and lines were beyond fixing .Stopped and told myself to do some research. Thanks to you I knew what tools and sharping set up to get,not to mention how to actually go about getting good results.I have made 4 or 5 solid bowls with a very good finish.....THANKS FOR MAKING THESE VIDEOS.

I've been collecting a lot of free wood. I found an illegal tree dump and have gotten some nice pieces from that. Amazing the wood that people just dump. I've also carried a small folding saw on bike rides out into the forest and found some nice spalted fallen timber. Our daughter cut down an old Apple tree, and I got some nice pieces from that. I just finished a small crotch bowl from the Apple stash, and a much larger piece (about 13" across) is still in its drying box. I turn bowls from green wood, sand them, and put them in a box or paper bag full of wet shavings. I weigh them weekly to monitor water loss. My Shopsmith has been busy with turnings over the first half of this year.

Ha, ha, my first reaction from your title is what to do with the shavings, etc? I would mix with green waste from the yard and kitchen to make compost for the garden. A good ratio of green to wood or other such item would be 3 parts non-green waste to one part green waste. To make it even better, make a pile with a picket fence like wall and add some worms bought from the bait shop. That ought to put some good use to those shavings and wood dust.

Turning is like the opposite of cabinetry. Cabinetry, a basic hand tool kit can be had for a few hundred bucks, but then you're hit with lumber prices, and to mill your own, it's a whole thing. Turning, Welp I just got a 3 foot branch abouts 10" thick off the side of a road and that's like 6-8 of them small bowls. And my daycare let me help myself to a big ol sycamore tree for free. As far as I'm concerned green turning is basically free. After you shell out on the lathe, tools, sharpening station, and what else of course

This is my first time wat your channel. I've been running lathes most of my adult life, but they they all squealed and turned out metal chips. I bought a wood lathe (small cheap Rikon) 20+ years ago and not having internet at the time I bought a book on how to use it. The book and I never seemed to connect. I take things literally and I was never sure what the book was saying. But about the tenth time I had a chisel ripped out of my hands, I gave up and there it has sat with the same block of walnut chucked up for all those years. Recently while watching other subjects on KZbin I stumbled across Phil Anderson''s channel and fell in love with his work - very artsy fartsy as he would call it, highlighting the bark on most every piece. But he didn't go into the elements of the proper cut with each tool as you seem to. Different strokes. So I have not given up yet, but I am handicapped by a miserable back that limits my standing time to two to three minutes, perhaps ten with a brace. So any project I tackle is likely to be a long term project. But I thank you for your knowledge, patience and time in sharing this video. If I never turn a bowl, my life is a little richer for having viewed it. Pete Wells in NH

I am a newbie to turning on a lathe & I just purchased my first one recently. Thanks so much for sharing this excellent prospect for making something unique out of what many would describe as scrap. I do have one question for you. When you were nearly done with the bowl you placed a "large bullet shaped" piece of wood into the second chuck & then added a rag, or something between the new bowl & the bullet. What was that material, it looked like some kind of a mesh with a waxy coating ? Did you make it, or is it available to purchase somewhere ? Thank you for your KZbin channel !! I have been viewing & reviewing many of your videos. Sincerely David WoodWorking Made Simpler Ada, Michigan

I looked at your “go to” tools. So the buyer must grind these to 55 degrees and sll the micro bevels? I dont have time to figure the angles, bevels you use because I will be using tormek t8 and not a traditional grinder with sorby jigs. I must have all the knowledge up front before i buy the lathe and now that lathe is a laguna 1524

Live edge vs natural edge… I was told by a guy that owned a sawmill that it’s basically impossible to keep the bark on a tree after it fully dries. I had always believed him except for species where the bark is more of a skin than a bark… but is he just completely wrong, is it possible to keep the bark on most trees?

Good question, which we cover more in the Tree to Bowl - Understanding Green Wood course. www.TurnAWoodBowl.com/green Basically, every species is different. If he's working a mill, he's probably only seeing a few different species. Some will shed bark if you look at them wrong, while other's like the hickory that grows near me, have bark that thinks its part of the wood. I have dry live edge hickory bowls that would take a chisel and hammer to remove the bark. It all depends on the species and how the wood is processed. Happy Turning! Kent

I don’t get your comments about the recess vs tenon. To make a tenon you remove more wood than most recesses. And the wall of the recess becomes a part of the base of the bowl.

I agree. It’s fairly straight forward to make a nice flat bottom then the mortise hardly removing any wood in the process. In the process as shown - creating a foot & a tenon a lot more of the bottom is gobbled up. I like the ease of creating the mortise vs the inelegant way of always having to reverse at the end, create a jam chuck, fine tune the bottom, nibble away at the very end & you still have to sand the bottom to “finish” it off. To each his own & there are diff ways to skin the proverbial cat.

I might give mortise a try. Just had a glue up bowl turn into a large mouth funnel. Totally operater error. Forgot how deep I made the recess around the tenon and I don't have one of those fancy calipers. Still a rookie making rookie mistakes

David Woff, I tried a 4 corner squre bowl today. Glued up 2 pieces of purple heart, 4x4x 1 1/2. Either my tools are not sharp enough or purple heart is too brittle. Final product is a 3" round disk a half inch thick. Zero corners. Very disappointing, but its my first try at a square bowl. I have some practice wood I pulled out of the burn pile. Its a 2x10 that is an actual 2" thick. I'll try that next.

My current opinion is that you get a more reliable hold with a tenon, but I also agree a mortise wastes less wood, and makes dealing with the bottom a lot easier.

At 21:00, you leaned over the lathe to start the outside cut. I think it might have been more comfortable to run the lathe in reverse and start the cutting on the far side. But that does take a bit of practice to start the cut at the desired distance from the outer surface. Oh, and make sure the chuck is locked on the spindle with a setscrew.
