Something to try....Use a laser printer, print the image in reverse and then secure face down on your wood. Use a small paint brush to fairly heavily soak small areas (maybe 5" x 5") with Turpentine and then burnish with a spoon (anything really, just something that will slide over the paper without ripping) applying decent pressure. Them move on to the next area and repeat. Not that I have any pyrography experience, but quite a few detailed router signs, and i found this the best way to transfer a detailed or large image. Will save you from laboriously tracing a large detailed image. Just something to try,Cheers
@Pyrocrafters
@Pyrocrafters 4 жыл бұрын
Path in AZ Thank you so much for the suggestion! I can’t do the turpentine thing just because of the chemicals it adds to the wood. I try not to burn anything that has had any treatments of any kind so I’m not breathing anything in. I wear a mask, but I still try to be careful. I have tried printing reverse on slick paper before and it did work pretty well. My only issue was laying straight on the wood. I’m kind of clumsy that way and the wet ink on a slick sheet has to be placed perfectly the first time or there will be ink everywhere. I would love it there was an easier way. Tracing the templates on take forever. Is there a natural type of turpentine alternative?
@PathinAZ
@PathinAZ 4 жыл бұрын
Pyrocrafters Hmm, turpentine is the only chemical that I've found to work, but there is an alternative. You can make the reverse printout as before, and instead of using turpentine, use a flat nib on your heat element and burnish the image on to the wood that way. Since the laser printer actually melts a powdered form of ink, it's possible to then remelt it onto the wood. The result (in my opinion) isn't quite as good as the turpentine, but with a little practice on heat setting, pressure and length of burnish time it takes, the result should be adequate for getting enough detail to trace/burn. Hope that helps! Have a good one..

I'm new to pyrography and enjoyed your video. You're organized, well spoken, and provide a lot of helpful tips. One small tip from this old farm girl: the diagonal lines on the feathers should go in the opposite direction. Think of them as a series of stacked Vs with the bottom closest to the bird's body.

I'm an "old" neophyte of wood burning having done it when I was a kid but am picking it up again. You definitely gave details that I did not know. The old adage of you're only as good as your tools definitely looks like a key factor. One question I was thinking about is what is the reason why you used carbon paper rather than reverse print to transfer the images? You are very skilled in this. Nice video.
@Pyrocrafters
@Pyrocrafters 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Guy! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I use the carbon paper because that's how I learned and it's just a habit. I started experimenting with different ways to transfer a couple of months ago and I still use the carbon. I'm just used to it I guess. I did buy a transfer marker the other day, but I haven't used it yet. You print a reverse image and then use the marker to transfer the print. I may test it today and see what happens. If it works, it will be much easier than carbon for sure! Thanks for watching!

@Pyrocrafters
@Pyrocrafters 3 жыл бұрын
Oh I see, you want to fill them in with the burner. I usually fill in letters with a texture. I like to add more visual interest than just a plain flat burn. I use my writing tip to add horizontal lines or I use my ball tip to add a stipple texture. I set my burner to a medium heat and let the tips/heat do the work. I also make sure to use a soft wood like basswood or poplar when I'm burning letters. That makes all the difference when it comes to adding texture. If you're burning a hard wood, it may be difficult to fill in the letters the way you want to.

Hi James! I use a Colwood burner and they have thin straight edge tips that help create straight lines. We sell them in our Etsy shop if you want to check it out. Also, it helps to burn on wood that is smooth and has a consistent grain pattern, like poplar or basswood. Thanks for watching!

If I wanted to do something like this and I wanted to put a light stain on this, would I do it before burning or after burning.

Varnish after you burn. You don't want to burn anything that has chemicals on it. Also, be careful when adding a varnish that has color. If you have any light shading in your wood burn, the varnish may wash it out. I learned that the hard way. :)

do you use any type of eraser to clean up the burn marks?
@Pyrocrafters
@Pyrocrafters 2 жыл бұрын
I use a sand eraser to clean up carbon marks, but I try to blend burn marks in with the art. Sometimes a razor blade helps too....if it's not burnt too deep.

Hi there! I am looking to purchase my first Colwood burner. I see you use the Super Pro 2 and I was just wondering if you knew of any major differences between the Super Pro 2 and the Detailer? I can't seem to find differences anywhere online. Thanks in advance!

Stephanie Dehaan hey Stephanie! I’ve never used the detailer, but I can tell you that the super pro II has two lines. One line gets hotter than the other and you can keep a wand on both sides if you want to have two tips ready to go. I believe the detailer is their most popular seller, so you can probably get the same wood burning results from one or the other.

@@Pyrocrafters Thanks so much Amy! I think I'll go with the Detailer, I'm not sure I'll need the 2 pens and if it has the just about the same heat strength, that'd be just fine! 😌 I really enjoy all your videos, they're very helpful! Keep it up! 💛✌🏼

is it necessary to wear any eye protection or other gear? im sure the smell is strong.

yes, I wear a respirator with filters rated for vapors. And you can wear safety goggles too. I also use fans that help pull the smoke away from my face and out the window. It helps a lot! Thanks for watching!

I do Fractal Wood burning on Gourds and well Everything Else I see that is Wood. Sometimes after the burning and cleaning il need to sand than it loses some of the detail. I am hoping to play with this idea to fill in lost details, worst smell of burning anything is Cow Skull or Horse Skull it is the closest to the smell of Burnt Huan Bone you ever want to get . I have smelled both in life & I never want to smell that again on purpose.

Thanks J&E! That really means a lot! I'm using a Colwood Super Pro on poplar wood here. I make my own poplar wood canvases. I get poplar planks from Home Depot, but you can also get them from KJP Select Hardwoods if poplar isn't available in your area. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bprSZWeiqrN9n9U

@@Pyrocrafters Hello thank you very much for your reply. I really enjoyed having a try at this craft. What I was using wasn't really sturdy enough as I bent the brass tip I was using. It worked well though but I need to buy a more substantial machine if I want to create a masterpiece ha! ha! I will be on the lookout now so thanks once again. Christine
