Nice tutorial! The image being unfocused when you come closer was quite annoying tho

it would be nice to know the brands of the gouges and the knives that wrrent made by makers, other than flexcuts the gouges look like ramelsons, but after buying a set of the knives I would never chance another tool unless I knew they were good.

Great info, thanks. Unless I missed it, I assume you don't use any type of sharpening stones for your knives for any reason. Just the leather strop. Or is the strop just for these Flex type knives? How about if one does use a pocket knife for whittling. Is a strop enough for them, or a stone recommended? Thanks, I'm ready to make a purchase and get into this hobby, I'm just trying to gather info.

Thanks for your question. There are as many ways to sharpen a knife as there are knives. Everybody has their own opinion on the best way. I have used natural stones, diamond cards, and I’m currently using wet dry sandpaper to sharpen my knives. I don’t have to sharpen my knives often, as I keep them stropped most of the time. By stropping them every 15 minutes when carving, you rarely have to sharpen them.

Got a question saw ur up sweep knife that u mentioned that u bought at a carving show...i dont have one and would like to get one for doing some tim wolfe dog carvings...what do u recommend...jeff alta iowa
@markdmaker31734 жыл бұрын
Jeff Bunjes Do you mean Tom Wolfe? I have some Tom Wolfe books, which is an excellent source for patterns. I actually have a VHS tape that I purchased from him many years ago. As for the knife, there are a lot of really good brands out there. Helvey knives, OCC knives, etc. my one recommendation would be with an up sweep knife don’t get too long of a blade.

what kind of wood do you use on these whittliling projects? Ive been using what i think is bass wood, but im not having an easy time so far
@markdmaker31734 жыл бұрын
Patty Ice Thanks for the question. Sometimes basswood can be pretty tough. I’ve run across a few pieces that I could not carve at all. Keep trying different pieces and make sure your knife is sharp. Good luck on your carving I’m cheering you on

How do you like the Butz knives? I picked up the detail just to have. Difficult to get and edge on
@markdmaker3173 Жыл бұрын
I use a 6000 grit sandpaper and a stropping motion and then move to a leather strap. For fine detail, I usually just use a number 11 X-Acto blade.

Lovely presentation except of course for your close ups. You need your hand behind to take away the background, or be more aware. Therefore, I’m afraid it detracts from the whole thing.

Helvies are my favorite knife. With this knife I think that it is best to buy one at a show where you can choose the colors you like as well as blade shape versus from mail order.

Just a question my dad got me a really sharp hunting knife pocket could I use that
@markdmaker31734 жыл бұрын
Bryce Peterson Thanks, I appreciate your question. I would start off with a $6 X-Acto knife with a number 11 blade on it. A hunting knife is very thick and will try to split the wood, rather than carve it.

Great reccomendation. I have that in my Exacto kit and actually use it for woodcarving, aside from having some of the knives in your video. My Exacto kit also has a circular hoop blade too (that is flat ground!) It is only about 1" across, but attaches with both sides to make a centered hoop and can take a beating across knots etc. good for spoons cups and bowls. If this is still available (mine is a very old wooden box kit) it is a fantastic beginners spoon knife and the flat grind is way easier to sharpen without modifying unlike a few of the budget hook knives I looked at. Years later, I still have not bought a spoon/ hook knife. The exacto does the job and sharpens easy. If this blade is still around, I doubt it costs much but works great. It is a different handle and chuck from the one that fits a #2. much meatier like a screwdriver. The exacto gouges and chisels fit this handle too.
@tbrew82223 жыл бұрын
I just checked and Exacto brand does not make them outside the "delux tool kit" anymore, but shettfield replacement tips are under 10$ for an 8 pack and fit the #5 handle.

Charles Knight I think the Flexcut knives check all those boxes. They are widely available, and you can get a decent one for around $20.

Mark ... Flexcut it is; ordered the catalog you featured in the video; I will be ordering the Flexcut, a strop, some media, and a protective glove for my work holding hand. I am working on a thumb glove for my knife hand. I don’t know much, but I believe in learning from both the wisdom from and the mistakes of others. I’ll be starting my carving adventure in July. Thank you for your quick response, I am grateful for the great advice and I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge and experience with me!!!
