Why use fancy shmancy unitasker mystery oils when this walnut oil is cheaper and more useful, especially in a nutty vinaigrette?? amzn.to/2Hh23Lf

New to the channel here. I'm only a few videos deep, but I'm already beginning to notice and appreciate that every video is SUPER tightly written. Your delivery comes across as whimsical, unhurried, and even slightly improvised - yet when I rewatch a video, I'm even more impressed by the absence of fluff, awkward cuts between takes, or lengthy video introductions. Very cool!

I've read that the cheapest way to get food grade mineral oil is to buy it from the pharmacy section of stores, where it's sold as a laxative product without any additives. Walmart and Target sell it for like $2 for 16 oz. I still have the oil that came with my cutting board but at that price it definitely seems worth a shot.

👍Yes, another terrific video....straight to the point. Walnut oil is great (but expensive). I went back to my mom’s tried snd true methods & formulas - she loved to entertain & made beautiful charcuterie & cheese boards when I was a kid. To clean my boards I use two ingredients: fresh lemon (cut in half) and sea salt. Rinse and let it dry a few hours or overnight and then I liberally apply the coconut oil. 💡Every so often I also spray the surface of the boards with a plain bleach & water mixture that I keep in my kitchen for use as a general disinfectant. I rinse & wipe it off and let it air dry. To condition my boards I use food grade coconut oil because it is highly resistant to rancidity & is antibacterial. I liberally apply the coconut oil, let it soak in for a few hours or overnight then wipe off any excess oil with a paper towel and put it away ready for use next time, I do this process after every use. Wishing everyone happy boarding days. 💞

Love the channel and the advice you kick down but I think a better option is mineral oil. $2 at Walmart pharmacy and it doesn’t “dry” so your board will absorb it better. Also, I heat my oil up for a few seconds in a pan on the stove. Soaks right in. Apply and let soak on the wood for 4-5min. Repeat until sexy.
@salli45883 жыл бұрын
Love ya kid, but I disagree on this. I use mineral oil on my cutting boards. It's super cheap at the drug store or grocery store, never goes rancid, hypoallergenic. My method, (for what it's worth) is I place my cutting board on a rimmed cookie sheet/jelly roll pan and dump the mineral oil on until it is running down the sides. Just smear a thick coat of oil all over the surface. and then I let that sit until it disappears; a few hours on the counter. Then I flip the board over and repeat. You'd be suprised how much oil soaks in, and this in turn makes your beautiful end grain hand crafted cutting board moisture proof, and thus cleaner, because where moisture can't get in, bacteria and mold can't grow. Plus, you can feel confident about washing the thing properly. Using this method also means you don't have to treat your cutting board as often. Thanks for your content. I enjoy your vids.
@psd9932 жыл бұрын
btw, they sell 99%pure paraffin as a laxative. Gotta assume its food grade if you can swallow it. And its a lot cheaper than speciality board oil which I think is the same stuff

As someone who makes wooden cutting boards, you can buy a gallon of pure mineral oil on amazon for $20. I buy it by the gallon and melt just enough beeswax to make it a solid paste to put in a jar, it works great and the wax/oil keeps the board looking great and pretty water resistant.

I can get 3 new bamboo cutting boards for $10.99. That's cheaper, more sanitary, and possibly more sustainable. It also means I don't have to be protective of a more expensive cutting board in case someone might ruin it, and any retired board can be reused as decorative wood for all sorts of projects.

I never used anything but canola oil for my cutting boards and never had a problem. My usual routine is to oil the board slightly before cooking every time the board has a pale light colour and feels "dry". Usually, this is once every 4-6 weeks. Walnut oil will go rancid more quickly than canola oil as it has more unsaturated fatty acids and oxidizes very quickly. Alternatively you can use coconut or avocado oil.

I use Dr. Martens WonderBalm. Sounds crazy to use shoe product on a cutting board, right? Except it's mainly beeswax with a few other waxes mixed in and it's totally safe to consume. Plus it lasts for ever and soaks right into the wood.

Well yes, I did click on in because it's the shortest XD but the reason I found it, was to look for how to use it. I'm not sure is it okay to cut meat on it, and then greens afterward even though it's washed? What happens when I cut lots of garlic on top of it? The basics is what I was looking for. I lived in a plastic household, and now want to change to a bit more natural and sustainable.
