I ve been watching your videos for years. I do all the things you do and my house is full of MCM items- you’ve helped me so much. I just can’t get use to seeing your face! Your voice is so familiar to me and my family- but to see you actually appear shocked my little girl today. “Mom, the furniture guy is on, come see!” You would have smiled! Thanks for all the good stuff! Love your channel.

You are hardcore! As your neighbour to the north (Manitoba), I know very well the temperatures that you have been working in outside. It has been so cold lately. I have been wearing multiple pairs of mittens and actually avoiding going out. I can't believe that you are able to do woodworking out there with bare hands. Great work too! Thank goodness it is finally warming up now.

My dad was a body and fender guy, he would sometimes bring us kids with him on a Saturday if he had to be in the shop. He painted a car on a Friday before leaving and left the heat on. There was a wi yet storm that knocked out the power and when we got there the next day, the paint had literally slid off the car and was a puddle around the entire body. 😮 I always have that day in mind and would never paint or topcoat when it’s cold in my little space in my garage for that fear. Thanks for braving the cold to do this little Experiment!!

It's surprising anything would set up in subzero temperatures - I expected at a bare minimum that the wax would freeze solid so you couldn't buff it. Like you mentioned, it's probably not the best solution. On the other hand, if it's the only solution you have, and time doesn't leave you any other options... it's doable. I don't think I commented before - thanks for letting us see your smiling face. My husband and I camp out in front of every video you release - and it's such a treat to see the man behind the voice!

I accidently did this experiment a few weeks ago in Pittsburgh. Sprayed a desktop with satin lacquer on a day when it was about 45-50 degrees in my unheated shop. Got busy and came back to it 3 days later (temp had dropped to the low 20's) and the top was still "soft" enough to leave fingerprints. Not wet, but certainly not dry. I moved the piece indoors and it set up just fine. My experiment was not as extreme as yours, and I bet it was dryer there than it is here, which probably also had an impact.

Thank you so much for that experiment. Here in Québec it is sooooo cold! It's cool to see that we do have options when we have no space to work. I live in a 4 1/2 appartement, no spare room so I usely do my stuff in the living room. I use water base finishes with low COV and I have a small camping tent for sanding. Electricity here don't allow me to plug my sander and my shop vac at the same time. I usely spray out side but only Hardwares...

What exactly is the difference between shellac and lacquer? I always thought they were the same until recently when you compared the two as if they're two different things. Also is that water based or alcohol based? If it's alcohol based that might explain why it's still able to evaporate below the freezing point of water because I think alcohol should freeze much lower

I've had pretty good luck with rattle cans in all kinds of temperatures. If you have flow issues or consistency issues, put the cans in some 120 degree water (basically the hottest a residential tap can do) for a few minutes then shake well and spray. I pretty much never have issues with shellac in colder temperatures given its alcohol base. I have had issues with wood itself expanding back after the fact and causing cracks in thicker, harder finishes though.

Given the very low temperature, I assume there must also be very low humidity. High humidity and damp would cause the lacquer to bloom, therefore, I assume, the lack of moisture in the air allows the propellants to flash off.

About 30 years ago I sprayed lacquer (through a gun) on a humidor on a "cold" dry Southern California afternoon. It was in the 40s, which is fairly brisk around here. I went in to have dinner and when I came back out to admire my work, I saw that the lacquer on the lid had cracked and shattered like glass. I think I just piled too much material too quickly. I might have put it under a light while i had dinner.
