Spraying fuel into the turbine exhaust will do the evaporative cooling thing so a bleed igniter for after burner from prior to turbine might be an option. Alternate is just a spark plug igniter placed in your perfectly profiled exhaust thrust nozzle. BTW love your fabulously curated work which targets what really counts AND intrepid safety first approach! Onya Boys!

It probably needs to have some kind of bypass air injected too. With all the soot (unburned wood) coming out of that thing it seems safe to say the exhaust doesn't have enough oxygen left in it to burn even more fuel.
@ChoChan776
@ChoChan776 9 ай бұрын
@@ToastyMozartThe oxygen content probably isn't too much of a concern, many afterburning turbojet engines use no bypass air. The main issue would be keeping a flame going at those kinds of exhaust gas velocities. Probably have to come up some kind of flame holder rather than a pinched piece of brake line.

It's so neat to think about these because unlike normal jet engines, you are throttling the air instead of throttling the fuel, so it is always running super rich. There probably isn't any oxygen left in the exhaust.

Yea exactly! On another one of these on a diff youtube channel they had some kind of o2 sensor. Their stoich ended up being calculating to like 30:1 or something crazy, but they all depend on the fuel you're using. Alky vs meth vs gas are all different sensors and stoich.

We made turbo furnace with a system to control the fuel (wood fumes). Basically there are to pipes for the fresh air to go: Straight in the exhaust (secondary) or straight to the firewood. The unburnt fuel will burn on the way to the exhaust pipe as there is more air coming from the secondary pipe.
@mzmatze
@mzmatze Жыл бұрын
What you need is a cyclone separator between the fuel barrel and the exhaust turbine of the Turbo. So you can separate the chunks of woodfrom the exhaust gases. Otherwise, these chunks go through the turbine as you can see as spontaneusly occuring flashes of smoke in the exhaust gas. This should extend the lifespan of the turbocharger significantly. :)

They could add a big metal spiral of steel pipe with holes drilled to face the center to route the injected air inwards (the flame front will be on the incoming air mixing into the hot combustible gas), and then have a labyrinth passage before the exit pipe going to the turbo. The burn chamber itself just needs an even swirling flow of gases, but not a lot of velocity. The air-injector/burner also would act as a diffuser. The labyrinth section would slow some movement down to precipitate out the heavy ash, and then the outlet for the turbo is where pressure would get exchanged for velocity to do its thing.

Hey guys, try to use the wastegate to make a steady bypass of air to the turbine inlet. So you dilute the hot gases with air wich loweres the turbine intakte temperature. Normally in small turbines only 25% of air is used for combustion, the rest is for cooling the burned gases. Best Regards Stefan

With the controller operating, this actually becomes a great way to get consistent and predictable behaviour, meaning the barrel can be used to run a forge or kiln, or heating large volumes in emergencies during winter, or rapid inflation of hot air baloons. The flame thrower should all be done in the exhaust, but needs to have an air intake back there that sucks clean air in to burn with the extra fuel, the same way a Jet uses the cold air from the bypass fan to add fuel to in an Afterburner.

There's probably not much oxygen left in the exhaust stream for the afterburner fuel to burn. Your best bet would probably be to take a page from fighter jets' book and use the bypass air from the valve instead - routing it into the exhaust pipe if you want all the fun stuff coming out of one end. It'd probably benefit from an ignition source like a spark plug too.

I think plumb your e-gate into the exhaust post turbo with a longer exhaust straight bit to contain. Also for longer run time I suggest a secondary pump feeding the intake with used oil, more energy compared to wood and easier to spray pre turbo.
@usefulemptiness2410
@usefulemptiness2410 Жыл бұрын
Nuts. And that's good. Instead of a fuel pump you can feed the fuel with a boost line from the cold side to the to of an airtight fuel tank, where you fed the fuel line from the bottom of the said container. It would be nice to add the air from the waste gate to the beginning of the burner as well. Probably a valve would be good in that case so there is an option to vent it direct to atmosphere as now, or full/partly feed it to the burner. A little different design, and your flame thrower turns into a makeshift afterburner that produces som measurable thrust.
@usefulemptiness2410

This is a work of art guy’s, gr8 job & vid. I’m no jet engineer, but I believe the internal burn chamber should be modified something like a jet engine, with a cylindrical burn chamber & a small round door on the end to seal it so the air can be blown around the outside of the burn tube & enter the burn chamber through a pattern of air inlet holes as you might find in a jet engine, this would help to cool the outer chamber & introduce the air more evenly. It would be easy to add a bit of Deisel, kero, sump oil at this stage with a smaller amount of wood firing into such a chamber for more control and longer run sessions. 2-3 stainless grill grates or some sort of a conical slotted filter at the exhaust turbo end of the burn chamber might help reduce the amount of ash & wood particulates going through the turbine & help them last a bit longer, but then they are copping a flogging. Love ur work n effort guy’s. Cheers
@Stoney3K
@Stoney3K 9 ай бұрын
The reason you're eating turbos is because the turbine inlet temperature is way too hot. The turbine wheel will overheat and distort, as well as the bearings. If you want to save future turbos, the best way is to have a combustion tube that is surrounded by another tube so the combustion gases are mixed with colder bypass air coming from the compressor. For a quick fix you may even be able to use the wastegate for this, with the air coming from the wastegate going into the turbine through a T or Y piece to mix with the gases from the fire, cooling them down.

Submerge the whole thing in a big water tank with just the intake and exhaust above/outside the water tank and you’ll be able to run it for much longer. Also maybe the turbo will survive longer with cooling. Another thing to make the turbo last would be some kind of cyclone before the turbine to get rid of some of the crap in the exhaust from the barrel.

The one issue I see in common with evry design I've seen is the lack of elevated combustion chamber within the main chamber thus keeping the heat further away from the pressurized walls making the system safer and creating better air flow around fuel materials. 🤘 I NOW we must use the exhaust pressure to spin another turbine coupled with a generator. Thus a new wood/trash incinerator / generator is born 💯(yes I posted this on the older video first lol)
@mr.pineapple7620
@mr.pineapple7620 9 ай бұрын
I think they need to use a lower A/R exhausted manifold to reduce flow rate because currently they are definitely also over spooling the turbo. With a smaller exhaust side the pressure inside the barrel would increase with lower airspeeds (Wich would kick up less of the solid particles inside) while also facilitating a cleaner burn. A water injection before the turbo would also probably increase turbo drive pressure (more power for the turbine) while also reducing turbine manifold temps. All of this would definitely increase turbo lifespan

You need to make a dual wall pipe which is fed by the compressor that runs along the exhuast feed, hot end and outlet for cooling and a simple afterburner. You could do this by placing a second, smaller sized analog wastegate further down the intake and routing its waste through a pipe that eventually envelopes the exhuast feed, hot side and outlet pipe. Cut some directional tear drop shapes in the outlet pipe and run the cooling/ afterburner shroud about 3 inches past the end of the outlet pipe. This should reduce the overheating and make much larger flames.

It's all the debris coming out of the barrel that's screwing the turbos. You need a way to catch it. I suggest some sort of steel plate that has small holes punched/drilled in it. You also should mount the intake and exhaust tangential to the barrel circumference, to encourage a vortex in the barrel. There's a lot of energy in there being wasted

Size the second barrel a bit bigger than the first, feed from one end and mount the turbo to the other end.

@MoronicAcid1
@MoronicAcid1 9 ай бұрын
A few ideas: 1. Compressor to high pressure air tank. A valve between the HPA tank and combustion chamber throttles the speed. Compressor doubles as an oil pump sucking oil into the HPA tank. The oil is separated in the HPA tank and fed back to the turbo, since the HPA tank has the highest pressure in the system, there shouldn't be any issue with oil backflow. 2. An open wood feed tube with a nozzle. This nozzle will keep the combustion chamber pressurized with air from the compressor/HPA tank without backflow of air/exhaust despite being otherwise open to the atmosphere. This will also negate any leaks from the gasket on the current wood feed. 3. Water bath filter will filter out debris, cool the exhaust, and generate steam power.
@MattBerrymotorsport
@MattBerrymotorsport 9 ай бұрын
love the ideas! how would a water bath filter work?
@MoronicAcid1
@MoronicAcid1 9 ай бұрын
@@MattBerrymotorsport The water bath could be a U-shaped pipe between the combustion chamber and the turbine or a pipe from the combustion chamber into the bottom of a reservoir containing water. As the exhaust passes through the water, any particulates and tars will accumulate in the bath. When the system starts water will be pushed out the combustion side of the U or pipe, and the water in the turbine side or reservoir will rise accordingly. You'll also need to account for evaporation losses or use a float valve in the design.

I think... I'm just spitballing here... but putting the waste gate on the exhaust side would make a big difference. I think you're really on point with a giant receiver, but I think the end cap should be cut off, a flange put on. so you can fill the combustion chamber. Put a combustion liner in it, and some kind of simple swirl vortex setup to prevent the turbo from being sand blasted by so much ash. I would imagine a smaller turbo would actually be better, keep the pressure up but total exhaust velocity down.

What you are building here is something like a Mechanical Rocket Stove Therefore you shouldn't use charcoal, you need the wood gas which also gives you the pressure... Speaking of pressure, you have noticed yourself that NOS is useless, if you want to have such an effect, spray water through a nozzle By the way, it is good with wood gas to have a very high temperature in the container, but this will lead to the steel melting, which is not uncommon even with normal rocket stoves, so you should protect the container from too much heat by e.g. fireclay or vermiculite, you should also consider connecting the input and output to cool the turbocharger a little
