Nice work as usual. I'm looking forward to seeing you run this thing. I'm also looking forward to seeing what you have in mind for fuel processing. Thanks for the show. Joe

Arrrrgghhhh! How did I not notice this video before now? Anyway, my fellow woodenwattage addict, you have done a great job on this cyclone module. I took a few shortcuts on mine, but you have left no stone un-flipped with your build. Watt you did with the collection jar was mighty smart too, as it will surely protect and support the jar, while it is in service. Mighty fine job, byjoves :) .

How or why would the gas swirl down the cyclone past the outlet? It seems to me that the draw of engine would be creating a low pressure zone right at that outlet tube which would then disrupt the vortex. So either lots of turbulence, or it just stops "cycloning" and starts heading up the outlet. Does the gas actually go farther down into the cone area, slow down, and then waft up into the outlet?

For a more detailed description of the workings of a cyclone separator there are some good publications on the interweb. But in short my understanding is that the centrifugal forces seperate the heavier matter from the lighter, which then makes its way to the bottom, the key is the vortex, cheers.

Good job. I'd be inclined to fit some thin sheet-rubber under the jar, and disc with a hole for the top. As you know, the gas will be very hot, so there will be expansion of the glass. In my wshop cyclone separator (swarf, sawdust, floor-sweepings etc), it is cold, so didn't need it. I'm looking forward to seeing this in operation. What power-bandwidth do you anticipate?
@whathappensintheshed
@whathappensintheshed 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that, not a bad idea, to begin with it'll power a single cylinder 9kVA generator, which will run during high demand, I hope to have a decent turn down ratio on the gasifier for periods of lower demand, later this year getting solar panels and batteries, so charging batteries will provide constant load in between, well that's the plan, watch this this space, but don't hold your breath, cheers.

Great videos mate, 20:04 10mm, is that the same as 3/8" ? Q; How do you know how clever someone is ? A; When they make it all look so easy, LOL.

I subscribed, please tell me is cyclone separator enough to remove particles from the gas or we even now need some filter in order to obtain mostly pure carbon monoxide?

Love what you're making here, I'd love to tackle a gasifier project like this one day as well. Can you direct me to the engineering paper that you got the cyclone formulas off of?
@whathappensintheshed
@whathappensintheshed 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, can't find exactly the ones I used, search Cyclone separator design, select images and you'll get a lot of stuff, I went for the most standard, common gas/air separator I could find, the image will take you to the site, have fun

Thanks for the video mate. 3 questions 1 stupid and 1 technical. Does it matter what way the gas spins/ direction? Does the size of the filter depend on the air flow matter? I'm planning on running things of different sizes and hoping there is a one size fits all. Is there an advantage to the glass jar being clamped in that way? Could it be done easier by drilling a hole in a tin lid and the pipe held in with a nut.
@whathappensintheshed
@whathappensintheshed 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, it doesn't matter which way the vortex spins, as for size, if you go too big for your gas flow your velocity will drop, good starting point figure out pipework size, multiply by 2, that's your cyclone diameter D. Or if you already have the cyclone body, then divide by 2, and that's your outlet piping, try to stay as close to the formula as you can, get the cyclone right, less work down the process flow. I clamped the jar between the steel plates because my jar had a glass lid, but you can use metal lid. Cheers

Don't can it just yet, even though I did follow industry standard cyclone formulas, I can't say for sure that mine is working perfectly, mabee 2" is a bit big for my flow rate or velocity not sure, I've been told the outlet pipe should extend further down into the cyclone, at some point I might try and add a little bit to the outlet pipe see if it makes a difference, cheers
