I used this same concept 40 years ago to make wood gears for a clock I make. I finally had Arrow tooling make a 6 tooth carbide cutter. I make 4 gear blanks and stack them. Good to see someone using the same idea.

Nice job Dan! Great idea. I have the old Craftsman cutter head and a set of tongue and groove cutters that i'm going to experiment with. Subscribed!

Where can you get the cutter head. Your video was excellent. Bob B

Not sure where now. Mine originally came from Sears. Shaper cutter head for the tablesaw.

This is the best gear method I've seen. My table saw manual says "Don't ever use a cutter head!" Just be careful tho, right?

Nice Job with the shaper blade

Hmm, great idea, thanks! Thinking that if your gears have always the same pitch size, you could perhaps create kind of indexing lock, that would caught the already cut cog(s), allowing you to "skip" to the next index exactly (after manually aligning first couple of cuts), without the need for manual aligning for each cut

Hi, Dan Enjoyed your video- I'm wanting to try out the gear cutting thing and was especially impressed with how you did it- do you know if there is a router bit that would do what your shaper bit did? Your method is definitely the quickest and I believe the most accurate on the web. Thanks for your response!

You may want to try a plunging round over bit, that seems to be the closest profile that I can find. You'd have to find a fairly small one though and play around with it to find the optimum depth and spacing.

That was my thought Ches, which router bit?

Hi Dan Nice. Need more explanation of the way you get the circular blank. The vital part is that cutter. Whats it called? Where to get one. Thanks.
@GallagherCarving10 жыл бұрын
The cutter is a tablessaw cutter ishead which takes regular shaper cutters. I'm not sure where to get one, sears used to sell the shapers for the saw. The the cutters used was very close to the profile you see in the video. I just tweeked it a bit with a file.

Dan, love the simplicity! Are you using only one shaper blade? Or a set of three? And if one, is that on a three position head?

Have you tried a 'sandwich' of blanks? I wouldn't go with to many without building a carriage for long stack of blanks.
@GallagherCarving8 жыл бұрын
Haven't tried more than two at a time. It should work in theory as long as he blanks are well supported.

Hello Dan, I loved your video. I have watched maybe all the videos out there on you two to make wooden gears. Yours seems the best , the easiest and the quickest. The problem is finding the cutting blade. I've gone to the "TOOL SHED" , where they sell professional tools for the skilled and the unskilled. No luck in finding that shaper blade , looking anywhere close to yours. Is there another name for that blade? The shaper machine I have is like a router table , in someway . They lay down where as a blade stands up like the one in your video. Like a table saw blade. I sure could use your help. By this is for my uncle who is 78 and has had a shop all his life. He's making a " THOMAS ALL-WOOD WOODEN GEAR CLOCK". ALL the help I can get wood be very appreciated. Don

Hello thanks for the kind words. The cutter is a vertical cutter that fits in the table saw. I am not sure where to find the cutters. They used to sell at sears many years ago. I did look for similar router bits and a "plunge round over bit" seems to be the closest. This should work with some experimentation. Dan

@@GallagherCarving Good morning . After watching your video a few more time last night after I sent you the comments , I found it . Someone had a old one on eBay by DELTA , it had the profile you had for $100.00 . I did look online for some and it's called a MOLDING CUTTERHEAD AND CUTTERS for a table saw. This clock that my uncle is making has about 3 different styles of gears in the plan. This cutter that you have will make the majority of them. I what to thank you very much for your video and your return comments. I have subscribed to your KZbin ACCOUNT. And I'll be watching and waiting on new videos. Thanks again , Don
