In America here. I love the Wood Jewels. They are not perfect but are very pretty and are a very reasonable price. I too wonder how they do it. I have a WJ scout that probably has one of the most attractive handles on it, even more so than many of my much higher priced blades. It is not a knife I would take to the woods and have my life depend on it, not saying it couldn’t, just wouldn’t pick it over other blades I have more suited for that. However, for a very usable and capable knife that is attractive and is reasonably priced, it fits the bill perfectly!!!

Knife prices often make no sense. Finnish knives are really cheap and fantastic. Wood Jewel can occasionally lack a little in fit and finish but the handles tend to be more than just a piece of birch, the antler and other materials use surely must add to the production cost. The Lauri blades that wood Jewel and other manufacturers use here are crazy cheap to buy as a blade blank and presumably also in bulk. They are also very good steel with a great heat treatment. I believe these blades help to keep the costs down on Finnish Puukkos. How Lauri do It I don't know. I kind of suspect that it's possible everyone else is just ripping us off😂. Thanks for watching mate and have a great new year.

Had to do the same to my Wood Jewel sheath. Same issue. Stripped the black off the blade. Put a light patina back with mustard. Great working knife for sure.

It's a real shame that so many of them seem to have the same issue. Because otherwise they are really good knives. I have also seen a couple of small fit and finish issues. They are hand assembled and taking that and the materials into account seriously cheap. This little knife has become one of my favorites and the fix on the sheath wasn't a really big deal. Just an issue that I would have thought they could solve. Thanks for watching my freind. Have a fantastic festive season.

It does seem to be a very common problem. You would think they would sort it out. The main worry is putting the blade through the leather wich to be honest I have never heard of happening. Thanks for watching mate.

Buddy, you know I love me some Finnish puukkos! I often puruse Lamnia's website for them, and often wonder which ones are decent and which are more 'touristy' in nature... Thanks for sharing your experiences with some of them 👍🇨🇦
@KuukkeliBushcraft

Wood Jewel are definitely considered touristy here. But at the end of the day it is a Laurin blade with just a prettier handle and an only slightly disfunctional sheath. They are really not bad. We do have a long tradition of selling knives as souveneers to tourists. Some of the older ones aren't great. Thanks for watching buddy.

Hey friend. I enjoy your videos very much. I use clamps or a vice when I want to wet form a sheath, or on the round part you cam wrap it tightly with cord. Even so, some leather just doesn't respond as well to the forming. You can also glue a thin piece of leather or rawhide inside at the leather/liner junction to help feed the blade into the liner. I guess it depends on how much time you really want to spend on the sheath.🙂Thanks for your video.

Will do a video with some Iisakki Järvenpää knives at some point, they are really pretty. Wood Jewel and Eräpuu both make stunning looking knives for suprisingly little money though. I don't know how they do it, the Lauri blades must help. The blade blanks are really cheap (and the steel is good) again, I don't know how they do it, unless they are secretly making them in China or everyone else is ripping us off 😂

So I'm in Inari and looking for a knife. Dont know much about knife, but need one for the forests. Saw wood jewel at Siida, before this video... but anyway what are my options? Possible to use kuukkeli consultancy? Here in Inari for a long time, also a student of yours that you dont know. about.

@@anujdudwadkar5437 Kuukkeli consultancy 🤣😂. Pasi Jaakonaho is a very good knife maker in Inari maybe you should have a look at his work, don't buy anything though unless you're rich, beautiful work though. If you are looking for a forest work horse I would recommend the Peltonen sissipuukkos or Terava Jääkäripuukko something more delicate and maybe an ahti or woodsknife. Wood Jewel and Eräpuu are both very pretty all of these knives have Laurin Metalli blades which are cheap but also really good and reliable. Also the Woodsknife predator is an excellent knife wich will give you the full tang strength of a Jääkäripuukko but also with a nicer wood handle. I would advise against paying the extra for the progressive tempered predator, the steel is a little too hard for my liking (it will hold its edge really well but also harder to sharpen and prone to chipping). Realistically you could do a lot worse than just get a 5 euro Morakniv from the local hardware store. A lot depends on how much you are willing to pay, if you want a really traditional Puukko or just a workhorse. What I can do if you like is I can do a comparison between a few puukos in a video. You will have to wait a couple of weeks for that though I am afraid.

@@anujdudwadkar5437 I can't really say where you can find this one in Inari. I have not been to Inari for a few years. They do tend to have a good selection of Wood Jewel knives in most souvenir shops, many hardware stores, petrol stations and so on, all over Finnish Lapland.

Sounds fantastic, maybe I should have hot waxed mine. The couple of stitches work fine though and it was a lot quicker. The laurin blade certainly gets no complaints from me. Still a slight hint of a secondary bevel on mine. Tend to sharpen the primery bevel mostly and touch up the secondary less each time unti it dissapears. Thanks for watching mate.

Hi Tim, I have the same knife. The sheath also had a problem, the knife didn't stay in the sheath. I fixed it with water an then glued it. Now it's good enough. A agree that Wood Jewel knives are good value for the price.

Tanks Otso, the sheaths do seem to be a bit hit and miss, but these kind of issues are easily fixed. The price is definitely good, the fact that Laurin Metalli produce such good value blades certainly helps. Thanks for watching buddy.
