Hello Kent! I’m new too turning too, I see like many others here, and I really enjoy your well prepared and presented videos. I have just barely started setting up and using a shop smith clone Total Shop and just got Ron Brown’s sharpening system with the 40/40 grind option. I was given a set of 12 old craftsman spindle tools, and have picked up some nice Crown Tools tools including 1/2” bowl gouge, 3/8” detail gouge, a large roughing gouge and scraper. I’ve been woodworking for 50 years and am super surprised at how much there is to learn with turning! It is very very specialized and I am beginning to see why so many people turn to turning. Yet having said that, compared to woodworking generally, wood turning is rather limited? I mean, the options are basically spindles and bowls? Yes they can get very decorative, and can be totally beautiful works of art. But it is not so easy to justify spending say $5k for a decent lathe and initial tools … assuming I upgrade from the Total Shop which I must say it not such a great lathe. I am probably getting ahead of myself to think about getting a decent lathe, but as I have not quite retired yet now is the time to spend this sort of money. Which brings me to why I’m writing here … any thoughts on the various lathes? I see you have a Robust, I’ve been considering Powermatic 3520C and Oneway 1640, but am leaning towards the Laguna 18/36, as I think it is all I would need, an I like the fact that a dull tool is quickly alerted by the motor bogging down a bit. I’m not afraid to spend the money, but don’t want to waste it either. Like I said it’s early days yet, and I need to make lots of shavings first.

Welcome to the party, Gary. Thinking of woodworking as “additive” (putting pieces together), and woodturning as “subtractive” (taking away more like carving). Two totally different worlds. As for the tools, yes, always sharp is best and the lathe needs as much power as you can afford. When you get into larger bowl blanks you will appreciate a larger motor. I have been turning for a long time, however for the past 8 years I have moved a number of times and have not set up my workshop and turned. Needless to say I am going to be rusty when I get back to it. The videos on your site are a great refresher for me and have motivated me to get back into turning the big supply of wood I have on hand. Great advice, the quality is top notch and one thing I really like is that I don't have to hunt all over the Internet watching various turners, some really good, some not so good. One stop shopping on your site, I like it. I used to belong to a club that had a wealth of it's own master turners but they also brought in master turners from around the country and world. One thing you have in common is your willingness to share your knowledge and help others. I think that is one of the keys to being a master, which you are.

My first lathe had no ability to adjust the tool rest up or down and I watched a video that explained repositioning rationale so when my new Laguna lathe arrived I couldn’t figure out why I was having so much trouble making even decent passes. These simple lessons mean so much to a novice turner, most others just say “let me adjust my tool rest” and almost never explain how or why, or what adjustment to make. You are quite right. So many issues are covered so many times and become redundant. As a newbie, my ears are peaked at the mention of certain bits of info, particularly lathe speeds during certain phases of turning objects AND tool rest positioning ( particularly the height as it relates to the CL of the object turned). I understand that so many of the masters have so many things they do that come as second nature to them because they have been doing it so long , so it's so great to have someone cover this issue . I had 2 Robust rests made for my Harbor Freight lathe. The post is 25mm diamter. When I ordered, I had to give the woman the height of my rest and diameter of the post. I did all that. I waited around 2 months for my rests to finally arrive. The post diamter was 23mm and they both were 1 1/2" too tall. I called Robust and the guy was nasty to me. He said they don't carry 23mm stock and my measuring device was wrong. Sorry, but I used 3 different calipers and a box end wrench and the posts were 23mm and they slop around in the holder. Then he told me to just cut them down to size with a hacksaw. For what I paid for the rests, it should've been right the first time. It's been 3 years and they're still sitting in the box. The whole experience disgisted me. Screw Robust.

Another good review that I found very useful. I like to replay your tutorials before going off to my Saturday sessions with my turners group. And I have followed your suggestions on gouges and bought some fine Sheffield cryogenic steel side ground gouges ($$$$!) which I like to think will help me do better work. But that might be like thinking if I buy the same shoes as Roger Federer I will play like him. ]-(

Until I can afford a Robust rest, I'll level off the iron rests by running them on a belt sander. Just be sure to remove all wood dust from the belt sander if it's used for wood.

Agree with everything. First thing I should have done when I got my Delta lathe was throw out the tool rests that came with it. They were rough castings with a coat of poor paint over them and caused me nothing but grief. Finally replaced them with ones similar to yours, although not that brand. Made a huge difference.

@@TurnAWoodBowl It makes a huge difference! The tools just glide along easily now, and it is much, much easier to control the angle of the tool and movement across the surface of the wood. They weren't expensive, either. Mine are similar to yours with a round high strength steel bar welded to the top of the tool rest.

As a brand new beginner, I just bought a cheap lathe from L**l, not being sure if I would enjoy turning. I certainly didn't have high expectations for the price, but the top surface of the tool rest has such deep machining ridges, it's almost as if it's been straight knurled! Right out of the box, I was tempted to file it smooth. Having watched this video, I'll follow my instincts and do exactly that tomorrow. I made my very first spindle 'thing' today and still have all my fingers, so I'll count that as a win.

@@alanmumford8806 One of the most frustrating things is having a gouge or other tool get caught while you're trying to do a smooth cut. Kent is 100% right, you need a good, smooth tool rest that will let your gouge or other tool slide easily along the rest. And the price of the lathe has nothing to do with whether or not you'll get a decent tool rest. The one that came with my Delta was absolutely *horrible*. Even the one that came with the old Harbor Freight junker I had came with a better one than the Delta.

Great explanation, Kent, thank you! As a beginner, I have a small table-lathe (record power dml 250) Using thicker gouges doesn't work because the toolrest can't be lowered to the fitting height. Changing it is hardly possible as it has a 3/4 inch diameter post. Waiting for the money to get a better lathe. Btw. Hi. Very informative and easily explained. Thanks. But, nobody ever talks about the angle of the gauge. That would very much affect the height of the tool rest. Am I wrong? I also whatched your video on how to use a bowl gauge. I can see the point of the gauge is upwards a bit and handle down but I would like to see a video or pictures from the front and back at the same hight as the tool rest in order to see the angles properly. Hello again Kent. Thanks for this video. I continually find myself having issues when getting into the “bottom corners” of live edge bowls. I (for whatever reason) cannot properly position a tool rest to provide me with the support that I need to get into that bottom corner to round out the sides into the bottom. My lathe has a max swing of 12” and even on a 6 or 7 inch bowl I find I’m too far out with the rest that I don’t have great control. I’ve tried several rests, all to no avail. Any suggestions?

I have an old craftsman lathe that I am just starting to use. So far the tool rest is everything your video says is wrong: not smooth (has raised ruler numbers on it that catch the tools), is not sturdy ( since it is a pipe base, it does not get tight and wiggles), cannot get close enough because of the way it is made. It is frustrating, especially for a beginner to try and learn on. Any thoughts?

Chris, great question. Well, if you're into welding and metalwork, you might want to make your own. If that's not an option there are other third-party tool rests available.
